these are awesome videos! i just picked up a set of good condition MP-32's and I am considering running the whole set through this process. I think I read in other posts that the nickle plating isn't as durrable as the Chrome plating? I am sure you have played a set you have restored..... do you consider the new finish durrable? thanks!
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Год назад
It's quite durable. You'll see when you sand a club to remove scratches. It takes a LOT of sanding to wear it down. Someone in my DIY golf facebook group just tried a product called Reprochrome that is more durable than the nickel. So there are options for the DIY crew if you don't want to pay to have them professionally chromed.

Love the videos man! Just a quick question, when restoring clubs with electroplating. Should I sand blast face and then plate or plate and then sand blast face?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 11 месяцев назад
I only did it before because early on, I blasted away a bit the plating because I didn't know how to control it, and im using a pretty aggressive media in the gun. Lower pressure with glass bead would allow you to do it after. If you're doing a matte finish on the entire club, I'd still do it beforehand.
@landencroteau4665
@landencroteau4665 Год назад
Hey Brad, love the videos. Quick question, I’ve noticed from when you first started it seems you are hand sanding less with finer and finer sandpaper and just spending more time with coarse sand paper like 80 or 120 and then going to polishing. Is that true? Because these came out awesome and don’t look as shiny but look better almost in my opinion than earlier videos. Thanks!

You rubbed out the copper stain with Mothers, how long will the plating (nickel and copper) last if the iron is played?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Год назад
I rubbed it for a long time! I was trying to avo8d sanding and polishing again. It slowly removed it but by bit. The nickel is quite durable. I sanded the remaining bits of nickel off this club for maybe an hour, so imagine how many strokes of play that could be. It's not as durable as Chrome, but it's pretty tough.

Hey Brad, What sanding belts are you using to refine the metals?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 3 месяца назад
They're scotch Brite belts. They're the texture of a kitchen scrub pad, so they're measured in Fine, Medium, and Coarse. I hardly use the coarse because it's pretty aggressive.
@ivanlopez763
@ivanlopez763 Год назад
is it mandatory to nickel plate the clubs? i kind of like the brushed chrome look. is there a solution that i can use to have it protect the metal but keep the brushed look?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Год назад
The nickel is just there to delay rusting again and to provide some scuff prevention. You can leave it and wipe it with corrosion prevention spray or a sealant, but that's not sustainable and it will only delay the inevitable. Modern clubs (non-forged clubs) you can just polish and you're done because they don't rust. But exposed carbon steel will rust again eventually.

You could lightly sand with like a 1000 grit to make it hazy, then spray clear coat on top of it (after you clean and remove wax/grease) and should look new again. Practice on a shitty thrift store club and get the hang of it. The 2K clear coat has only a 2 day lifespan once you break the seal, so practice, then get on it.

Great video Brad! Copper face is 👌🏻. When you use the electroless solution, how much do you have to replenish at a time and how often? Thanks man! I’m almost all setup on my own. Just finished my workbench today and everything arrived 😀
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Год назад
The instructions with the kit are horrible. They're don't even describing the same kit (they talk about Part A and B, which is from their 'regular' electroless kit, not the One-Plate). I add a half oz (half of a shot glass) of solution at the beginning and the other half at 15 minute mark. TOTAL guess work, but it's inline with a forum post I read where the responder recommended only a few milliliters at the 15 min mark.
@felloffmybike1775
@felloffmybike1775 Год назад
Thank you for the reply. When you say 15min mark, do you mean every 15min while each club is in the bath?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Год назад
@@felloffmybike1775 Yes. With traditional electroplating, you're stealing nickel from the anode plates. With electroless, the nickel comes from the solution itself, so you have to replenish it along the way.
@felloffmybike1775
@felloffmybike1775 Год назад
And each club roughly takes about how long to plate? I’d assume a couple hours? So you’re standing by and every 15min adding a half oz? I thought the rep said you can do 12 clubs before adding replenishment? Damn, feeling confused 😕
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan Год назад
@@felloffmybike1775 I'm plating it for 30 minutes, so i add it once during the cycle. Yes, you're supposed to get 12 before it's completely useless, but if you replenish, you keep the solution at an appropriate level and it won't 'crash' (according to their insufficient documentation). I know it's confusing and i've reached out to their support for clearer guidance. Electroplating (with anodes) although pretty easy, is more 'difficult' to get right for first timers. But if you learn that process, you can substitute copper or even chrome for nickel. Eventually, the anodes get eaten and you have to replace them. To put in into perspective, I've only replaced my anodes twice since i started this - once because they were too small, and the second time because they were eaten too far. Electroless is VERY easy, the instructions are horrible, and you have to maintain your solution during the plating run. I add a few sips along the way to play it safe. There's ZERO math with my approach, but it's still maintaining its ability to plate.
