Lately I've been interested in more loose impressionistic style drawing. So I've been exploring minimal sketching with light color pencil & going with either watercolors, or ink washes on top. Trying to keep to larger (size 10) brushes & be very intentional about details. Using a fountain pen has helped speed up the process when drawing outside. Love my R&K Sketch Ink (Thea color) as its dries to a very warm grey and doesn't stand out too much. Also started using the Faber Castel Matte series pencils and enjoy that they don't have that shine that normal graphite pencils have. Plus learned to book bind over the pandemic, so now I exclusively make my own hardcover sketchbooks to the size, paper quality, and brand of my liking. It's helped me to keep a regular sketchbook drawing habit. Thanks for sharing all your materials. Will look into the Princeton Aqua Elite brushes.
I loved this video - full of good information and inspiration! I couldn't say which is my current favourite medium as I love so many, but I do find that watercolours are quite magical, so they will always have a special place in my heart. :)
Watercolor, plus, I like the Caran D'Ache Technalo graphite watercolor pencils. They are great for drawing and getting a little added dimension shading with a wet brush.
My current favorite medium is watercolor. I prefer mechanical pencils to wooden ones. I wanted to say, about that ceramic palette from Jackson’s, mine is from Jackson’s anyway, I have the exact same frustration with trying to get paint out of the wells, it drives me mad! 😂 Especially those ones in the corners, ugh! Great video, I know it’s old but I’m just working my way through your back catalog. Thanks Kriksis.
My favorite medium changes so often, it's hard to pick just one. In 2023, what I have enjoyed the most is making papercuts from thin brown paper bags from my bakery. After cutting, I dip them in golden amber shellac. It gives them extra strength and a rich color. I use acrylic matte medium to glue them into my sketchbooks. I love making loose sketches with colored inks and a bamboo reed pen. My favorite brands for water soluble inks are Herbin and Robert Oster. I use DeAtramentis Document ink (black) in my fountain pen for pen and watercolor sketches. It is waterproof, so you can paint over it after it is dry. I agree with you about Derwent Drawing pencils and Derwent Lightfast pencils. Thanks for the color suggestions.
I love mechanical pencils too, but I prefer .7mm leads over .5. They’re a bit harder to find here in Australia, but I feel really clumsy when I use .5mm for some reason. If you want a fountain pen that won’t ever dry out, I highly recommend the ones by Platinum. The platinum preppy was my first fountain pen, and I lost it. I found it 2 years later and it still wrote perfectly (no dried ink or anything). I know Noodler’s make some inks that are lightfast+waterproof etc. that have a good reputation, but I haven’t tried them yet. I love their Southwest Sunset (formerly Apache Sunset) ink though, it’s my favourite! I have been meaning to get the Kaweco Perkeo too, so I’m glad to hear you like it!
This is my first video of yours. It was the fox figurine in the thumbnail, which made me click! So cute - where is it from? Love your preferred colour palette and your genuineness! It made me subscribe! 😊
I am a wood or pure graphite pencil person for sketching but for writing and drafting I use mechanical. I like being able to use the side of a wooden pencil. Love your video, thank you for sharing ❤
This is my first video of yours. It was the fox figurine in the thumbnail, which made me click! So cute - where is it from? Love your preferred colour palette and your genuineness! It made me subscribe! 😊 I prefer using wood pencils for sketching, because I tend to press to hard and they seem softer on the paper. For me at least.
Thank you so much for this lovely and informative video!! I love your preferred palette; love those muted colours and natural tones. I also LOVE mechanical pencils - I have the clutch pencils and I adore them! I love the thicker leads. All my best to you! ❤
Ahh I love this!! And yes, the Princeton Aqua Elite I think you described well. It's almost a strange but super pleasant tactile feel. If I had to describe it, it's like matte and almost grippy? Basically the opposite of "glossy and slippery" if that sounds right? Your little adventure gouache palette is so precious too ❤️ how perfect of a teeny container it is!
I love how your art journey is evolving and your studio space is quite charming. I love mechanical pencils from a design perspective but I also love the feel and smell of a nice wooden pencil. My favorite medium is watercolor and I have been lately been obsessed with dark moody blues like Payne’s grey, vivianite, and indanthrone blue. France is a great place for a holiday and I hope you have a lovely time. Thanks for the video😘
I use both mechanical and traditional wood pencils and I enjoy both. When I started my art education, I split my time between classical art and technical drafting and graphic design. Loving all types of different writing implements is what most stuck with me. And as a mixed media artist, I throw them all into my work together! Hope you are having a delightful vacation!
Thanks for sharing your favourites 💛 I’m enjoying watercolours and coloured pencils at the moment. When I’m sketching out and about I use brush markers and coloured pencils.
Haha, "what is your current favorite medium, I am really curious?" Instant coffee isn't all bad, it serves a purpose and sometimes it's perfect. Your color combinations are my favorites as well, plus, I love ❤ watercolors and wish I had the variety you have collected. Yes, I also have the Derwent Drawing pencil set and they are so beautiful I enjoy them every time I take them out to sketch or use in multi media. Also, I use both mechanical and lead pencils depending on the paper quality since I usually don't want to engrave/indent as I work. Keep up the great work you're doing. The microphone is amazing and totally improves the audio. Great video, thank you!
Lovely video 💛 all the supplies shown were very exciting and the example work beautiful 😊 on a side note, if you don't mind saying, what is the name of the upper left Kuretake yellow pan colour in your sketchbook palette? ☺️
Thanks for sharing your favorites! Watercolor is my favorite medium and I tried Essee paints because of your recommendations. Have a wonderful holiday!❤👋
I’ve bought some handmade watercolour paint over the years. This year two new handmade watercolours small buisnesses I’ve bought from are: Beam paints, an indigenous woman owned company in Canada. Stoneground paints, also from Canada. The Beam paints are packaged plastic free. The two most original colours from Beam are Wild Salmon and Wet Grizzly. They’re both iridescent, have a special reflective texture that is amazing!
I have both mechanical and traditional pencils. My favourite medium is watercolour, but sometimes it’s colour pencil. I can never quite decide 😂. Enjoy your holiday ❤
Hi Kriksis! Thank you for sharing your favorite art supplies, I love watching these videos and may have to make one myself. :)) Inn recent times my favorite art supplies has been watercolor, but I also like to use polychrome pencils and pastels to give details or accentuate colors. Have a beautiful holiday. Love and leaves ♡ PS: I'd love to do a art supplies and art exchange with you.
My favorite medium is weirdly seasoned: in warm months it’s definitely watercolor, but when it’s getting cold I start craving opacity and dense textures - and I switch to pencils, acrylics and even water mixable oils
It depends on what I am drawing if I use a mechanical or wood pencil. For rough sketches or for painting over, oh, and for when I plein air, I use mechanical pencils. My mechanical pencils have both refillable lead and erasers, which make them perfect for field work. But sometimes, I like to just make a graphite drawing, and then I'll use wood pencils. If I am doing that in the field, I'll take my Blackwing because it is the most versatile wood pencil out there. Currently, even though I love watercolor so much, I am using mostly gouache and learning to use oil pastels. A neck injury makes it impossible for me to do anything that isnt completely vertical right now. I have a lot of acrylic paints, but I always make such a mess with those, so gouache it is!
Nothing better than a cup of tea and a Kriksis art material video ^_^ I completely agree with you about Pith sketchbooks; the paper is very spongey and soft and textured and I've yet to find a medium that feels super nice on it, althought black ink creates some interesting textures. Moleskine was absolutely made for graphite, and like you, really enjoy mechanical pencils on this paper :D I got very excited seeing that big box of inks!!
oh I didn't know you were from Latvia that is so lovely. I recently learned about Deep Deep Light and fell deeply in love with everything about it. They are so inspiring and I intend to get as many as I can and paint baltic themes. I agree with what you said about handmade watercolours. Happy painting
My current favorite medium is just pencils and inks. After discovering how much I like mechanical pencils for my work I rarely use the normal ones anymore. What fountain pen do you suggest for manual refilling? I bought an ink pot but I was struggling finding a pen that isn't a cartridge based one.
You can find ink converters for most brands and styles of pens. And you can syringe-fill your used cartridges with your favorite drawing inks as well. There are lots of videos with how-to on both. Try very small cake decorating pastry syringes or tiny pipettes to refill your current cartridges. I have a messy path to my favorite method, but experimenting is half the fun of using your supplies, right? 😅
@@lightwavz I don't really have any cartridges anymore as I'm getting back into fountain pens again. Preferably I'd like a pen that was ready to go without having to by a converter. I'll look over some tutorials. Thanks.
Twisbi eco is a lovely option then. Has cartridge built in already and a lot of capacity. :) Both for Lamy safari and Kaweco Pebeo I bought cartridges as extra. Best of luck!
Reduce your video time, it’s too long. Talk less l usual watch without sound. I like watching you work it’s very relaxing. Keep up the amazing work, your very talented. 🌸🌼🌿🌱🦋🌷🪻🌺🍀
