I think the horror of the painting is that they whitewashed him, he's just an object, just being used as a reference for a painting. They would never paint *him*, not the darkskinned young boy they bought for sex, they're just using him, his vulnerability and his obedience, as inspiration for this depiction of him kneeling in servitude at his maker's feet with his arms open. Its a monstrous thing really, and it ties into his untetheredness. He can barely remember his name of Arun before he was renamed and renamed by the men who bought and sold and donated him, much less his own face in this terrible reflection. Of course none of this is to excuse the monstrous things he's done and does and will do, that's not really the point of this, but at least that's how it reads to me I also interpreted the "HA" from Lestat to maybe be Louis' anger at Lestat being compared to Marius and Armand's whole spiel about the cycles of violence they're all caught in, as if Louis himself does not believe deep down that Lestat is a monster in that way, but that's just a guess.

That's interesting about the painting. The first thing that came to my mind was in Queen Charlotte when George's mother insisted that Charlotte's skin must be painted lighter. And yeah, I see Dreamstat's dialogue as a part of Louis' inner thoughts. So when "Lestat" scoffed, I thought of it as Louis basically internally rolling his eyes at Armand as if to say "oh boo hoo, now you're giving me your sad backstory too the same way Lestat did?" Coz the whole time while they're in the museum, Louis keeps pointing out how similar Armand is to Lestat and he doesn't want to be given a reason for why they act the way they do. Yet he fails to understand the true significance of how vulnerable Armand is being with him, just as Lestat was in the past. Out of all the vampires, Louis' creation was probably the least traumatizing considering he was given a choice and it didn't directly involve anyone he loved.

@naaziaf7239 I didn't even think of that. But it makes a lot of sense. This is the episode that honestly made me feel bad for Armand (props to the actor). The writers are doing a good job showing different sides to each vampire

@@naaziaf7239 interesting theory, but that is purely you looking at it and seeing it that way. After reading and watching things about the production of the show, I learned the truth is much more simple. The producers asked the people working on the show to find a painting in the museum in Paris that featured a young man who could be a younger version of Armand. That painting is the closest they could find. So it's actually a real painting, which resides in the same room as the Mona Lisa.

@@cullenarthur8879 that’s an explanation of how they found the painting sure, but that’s not an in-universe explanation for why the painting of a dark-skinned South Asian man is clearly a white person with lighter hair. If you don’t want to engage with that at all then sure, but in a show that has gone to great lengths to actually engage with the fact that many of its lead characters have been race-swapped (the careful details of Black NOLA culture from s1, the new racial dynamics between Lestat, Claudia, and Louis, etc), I think this is a fair interpretation of why they would use that painting, rather than them seeing a painting of a white person and going “eh, close enough” Being South Asian myself, there’s a long, complicated history related to all of this, especially in relation to colourism and the lightening of skin in art and history. I believe the show is aware of this and using it as a part of its visual storytelling with Armand.

@@naaziaf7239 it's definitely an in universe explanation. It's an interesting theory, but like I said, it's not like they created a painting that intentionally white washed Armand. They simply found a real painting that featured a young man who could pass for a young Armand. It's an interesting theory though.

The way Louis is acting as if Claudia picked the coven over him is insane! I get that he's trying to say that she's the one who insisted on joining the coven, but he's just as locked in with Armand too! If Claudia wanted to leave (provided she hadn't yet joined the coven) I highly doubt Louis would leave with her. He'd tell her how much he loves Paris (and Armand) and how she's free to go with some sappy speech as if he's doing her a favor.

@@cyanrose499Louis warned Claudia about the danger of the coven. She insisted on joining and told him she "needed this". She also kept telling him to find a life outside of her. Louis loves Claudia, but Claudia doesn't love Louis, in fact, she seems to despise him most of the time. When Louis was preparing to die in the sewer, all he did was plea for HER life. Louis has done everything he can for Claudia. She is going to have to deal with the consequences of her decisions.

I need a lot of the fans to remember that THERE WAS LOVE between Armand and Louis. They genuinely felt something for each other despite how toxic the relationship played out. Louis just loved Lestat way more.

That's so true! Like I love Loustat as my OTP, but Louis and Armand's relationship feels real, and dare I say...healthier? What I mean is that removing Armand's background manipulations and Louis' obsessive guilt over Lestat, they get along with each other way better than Loustat. They're both content with having a cozy, chill relationship without needing to force each other to compromise too far out of their comfort zones the way Lestat used to insist on Louis. Even their arguments are less toxic compared to the biting and mean remarks that Louis and Lestat used to throw at each other because they're not trying to hurt the other person just because they feel hurt.

I do believe they have feelings for each other. Truthfully, if Armand didn't do all he does, I would like his relationship with Louis, but they do come off as that old married couple that are just comfortable with each other. Like the spark has burned out.

Right. They are toxic but the fact that they take turns bring the dominant partner it sweet but at the same time was there down fall because Louis got too cocky while Armand got sloppy because they tried to take that dynamic outside of their relationship with vampires that already saw favoritism from the start.

I love that you fight for Claudia as hard as you do. She deserves understanding as well. I do think fans are way to hard on her. The one thing I love about this show is all these characters live in the grey, where they all are toxic to each other, but you can see where they all are coming from, and you can feel for all of them even when they wrong. That why I like most of characters. I can't wait to get you take on episode 5. It's my favorite episode so far. It's only been out for 2 days, and I've already watched it 3 times and probably going to keep watching till the next episode.

Really, the character writing in this show is incredible. Yes, Claudia got hit with a harsh reality check after she joined the coven but I feel she would have been more equipped to handle ot of Louis hadn't kept it from her that Armand knows about Lestat. The coven at this point are a bunch of snobby cliques and they're messing with her like a new shiny toy while keeping her at arms length because she's already a violation of one of their sacred rules. And this isn't even her fault! If they had denied her entry into the coven because of that rule then it would have been way kinder. Instead they pretend to be welcoming to her and Louis, knowing very well that they don't want anyone else joining them and stealing the attention of their leader away. They're like spoiled children and Claudia has been through too much to play their silly games.

I think the show does a really good job of fleshing out each character. And the way they show things through different points of view always helps me see things in new ways. I've even started feeling sorry for Armand (never thought that would happen!) @cyanrose the coven, especially Santiago, is really feeling themselves. But I blame Armand. He is supposed to keep them in check. He wants to run the coven, but then he doesn't. He needs to make up his mind because they coven is moving on without him. But I find it hard how they call Claudia a child but mentally she's much more mature than half of them

A lot of painters throughout medieval history, the Renaissance, Baroque, etc, "whitewashed" their black and brown human subjects. Sometimes, a black or brown figure would be painted over entirely, creating a new, sometimes pastoral background. Recent restorations have lifted the paint to reveal figures hidden over the centuries.

Louis trying to be a photographer and being told he's not good enough for a full on career (even though he's not so bad either😫) was so sad for me. When you look back you can see just how average Louis is at practically anything he does. 1. He's not the best businessman (Lestat had to help him cheat his negotiations and he wanted the Fair Play saloon so bad yet it basically collapsed soon after he got it) 2. He not musically talented (as far as we know) 3. He can only dance a little and it looked like Paul was a better dancer 4. He only had a brief interest in the theatre (he got sick of going to performances altogether) 5. He's a terrible strategist even though he's intelligent 6. Now he thought he found his footing in photography but learns that it takes way more than snapping pictures, even if you have a good camera. It's heartbreaking because you come to understand that there's really nothing that Louis can claim outside of a hobby and some basic business dealings with someone else's help. Even with the art dealings that they do right now in Dubai, it's clear that he needs Armand's help to make sales and procure clients. Not that he's particularly bad at anything, it's just that he doesn't have a firm grasp on anything. I don't know if this is what also makes him an odd vampire but throughout the books, it seems like all the vampires we meet have something remarkable about them, wheter it's their natural talents or their supernatural abilities. Louis just kind of floats through life and wants to be tucked away in his own imaginery world.

His excuse about considering her happiness is weak compared to the real danger their in. Louis knows by now how much Claudia hates (and even fears) being caught off guard with everything they've been through. He's still treating her like a child and making decisions on her behalf. And by this point, he's happy to live in delusional bubble about Armand and him creating a separate life from the coven, to show just how much he doesn't understand what coven life and territories mean to vampires! 😫 I love Louis as a character but wooooowww...the whiplash you get from his choices...

The pause when Lestat says apple in French is likely Louis's subconscious searching for the word. His French is rusty as pointed out in episode three while talking to Claudia so it makes sense Dreamstat would have that pause because it's just Louis really.

The way I cackled when Louis had Santiago's tongue!!! I said "Aww shoot" my toxic behind thought that was lightweight sexy. And Armand hitting that table and yelling ENOUGH was.....ooooo wwweeee!!!! This show is bringing out my toxicity 🤣 The fact that Santiago clocked their NOLA accent should've let them know they are not safe. And Armand told Louis don't lie to them, they are not forgiving. Smh Louis is sounding real Pimp DuLac-ish with that "You sure about that Arun?" All that was missing was "I can be your mother, your father, your everything baby" **que Willie Hutch's I Choose You**

We're halfway there and I'm still not ready😢😢 Your rant was everything!!!🔥🔥 even I can't defend Louis for keeping it from Claudia that Armand knows about what they did to Lestat. And believe Dreamstat represents Louis' inner thoughts or at least hes using Lestat's image as a scapegoat for his harsher, more honest thoughts. That's why he was later able to give himself good insight about the mistakes in his photography now that he felt like his "other self" was looking at it objectively.

They shouldn't be out anywhere, they should be hidden, somewhere where no one but Claudia could find them ESPECIALLY because they are physical proof of their various "crimes" including what they (Claudia) did to Lestat. It doesn't matter if he moved them or bumped them, or anything. It was her carelessness for leaving them where anyone could find them, and it was her carelessness and recklessness that had her breaking the 3rd law literally in the coven house, which led directly to Santiago learning about them, and finally to him invading their home just to get them. And because she didn't properly care for them, that's why he was able to find them 🤷🏽‍♀

@@shalayahomebodytv Yeah, I love Ben Daniels but I absolutely rage every time Santiago is on the screen, because of how much he's manipulating her and using her to enact his own revenge, which ultimately has nothing to do with Claudia or Louis. How much he's preying on her desperation and by relation how vulnerable and susceptible to manipulation it's made her... hate it... And to be fair I don't think there's anything wrong with her leaving her diaries sitting around, as just leaving her property sitting around. I think the "slip" is that she knows she alone has written the "secret" in them, and that both their lives hinge on the coven not finding out this secret, but she's left that just out in the open. And it's not that she writes in her diaries, because I personally wouldn't consider that breaking the law really, (but unfortunately neither she or we decide that, so 🤷🏽‍♀). But it's that she would be doing it literally in the coven house. It's like running a red light in front of a police department, or stealing money right in front of the security camera. And the sad thing is, none of it's her fault either, because she's so blinded by her desire for family and community and acceptance and love. And who can blame her... But that's why, she's actively letting down her guard left and right, and being really careless. It's just unfortunately happening around a pack of predators, who are all just looking for a sign of weakness. This is an impossible situation for them both.

No spoilers, but the Queen of the Damned movie is drastically different from the books. I’d assume that any vampire history including Lestat and Marius’s stories are not going to match what you see in that film. All we know so far is that Marius is Armand’s maker and he got burned by the coven, and Armand apparently thinks he’s dead. Magnus is a different vampire, who Armand seemingly had some beef with and who turned Lestat and then killed himself.

Armand’s story is pretty close to the books, so I’m gonna guess he’s not lying at all. Marius was burned by the Rome coven, and Armand likely thinks that he is still dead (although we know that he reappears later with Lestat) because he never came back for Armand after all these years.

Marius was never killed but he was burned to the point it took him decades to heal. He eventually does with some help from a woman he made a vampire named Bianca and some of Akashas blood willingly given. Then yes he meets up with Lestat after.

Love the review!!!! ❤️ I need to put my cape for Louis, a tad. Um Louis had a meltdown in the cafe on his date with Armand, ran to the hookup spot, killed a random man, left the body in plain view, and then fled the scene. He was having a mental breakdown and still trying to talk to Claudia about getting their stories straight…all that happened the night he found out Armand already knew their secret. Does no one care that Louis had a full blown panic attack in his dark room seconds before he came into the bedroom? That’s initially why he was breathing heavy and clutching his chest. He was about to tell Claudia that Armand knew about Lestat. Claudia didn’t even notice him in distress. She cut him off and started opening up to him about Bruce. Then she told him about being excited about finally working the stage and about the becoming a member after the show. So, I guess he should’ve rained in her parade? First of all, I don’t think she would’ve listened. She didn’t listen any of the other times that he tried to tell her it wasn’t safe - “It’s not safe, they can read minds, they have a shrine build for him”. How many times did those conversations end with her yelling at Louis? “I’m going back, I need this or don’t ruin this for me” Louis gave Claudia the agency that she wanted, demanded. She made the wrong decision knowing that what they did to Lestat would be hanging over both of theirheads whenever it was discovered. Lestat told her the vampires over there were vicious. He dragged her off the train heading to Europe last season to keep her stateside, and people were up in arms over it to keep her in the states. This situation is horrible for Claudia, and I want to fight the coven. Although, I do understand things from their POV as well.

i think dream!stat is all of the above. everything lou remembered most fondly about les, and everything he hoped les would be. but also things lou himself was thinking anyway--cuz les & lou are actually very similar, which is why they got along so well. but les acted on things he said, and lou said several times that he envied les (and paul) for their candidness & authenticity. i think dream!stat paused cuz louis himself didn't remember how to translate apple, so dream!stat didn't either.

The Rome coven did set fire to Marius and his studio. He was living outside of their laws, like Lestat was in Paris. He didn't die in the attack though. He survived the fire and recovered. That's how he ended up meeting Lestat later. That's what happened in the books anyway.

I dont understand why the fandom goes so hard against Claudia. My guess is this current time period's thoughts on pc-ness. Claudia is a child, looking for what all children look for: family. Sure she is an adult mentally, but she still holds that base level of being a child because that is where her human life ended! You had me rollin' 30:48 you really mad at Louis 🤣🤣🤣,but i'm not mad. At this point it's 50/50 their falut because Claudia was getting played by Santiago as well He played into her being excluded from the coven to his advantage and she let her guard down just enough to find wholes in her stories. Plue he wouldn't have known about her diaries if she shows him she writes in one, but more blame still goes on Louis because Claudia is still mentally a child, and he was the one that pressured Lestat into making her and he agreed to kill Lestat and he chose to stay in Paris after knowing they knew Lestat. So you will get no push back from me.

I'm pretty much splitting the blame at this point. They all had a part to play. Looking back, Santiago did play Claudia, but I can't get too mad at her because he even had me fooled. But I do feel like Louis had plenty of time to tell Claudia, and she shouldn't have found out like that

I feel you. Louis plays a part in his downfall but literally if the people closest to him to him would just let him vent and have his human connection he was be less destructive. Armand was doing that but… he messed that up so now Louis resents him probably more then Lestat

@lstarsabb That's the thing, no one lets Louis just BE. And then viewers, for whatever reason lose it and rage and stomp on his neck, basically when he loses tolerance for it. When he dares to not be happy and passive in it. Everyone else can rage or be mad, everyone else can speak their minds and stand up and have a say, but not Louis. It does my head in all the time. Like all these other characters can say some real messed up stuff to and about Louis, and no one bats an eye. But Louis so much as says something not nice, or rejects poor treatment or his agency being taken away AGAIN, and everyone loses it and calls for his head. It's wild sometimes.

I agree with all that, except I feel like we all need to give Claudia more grace when it comes to "choosing" the coven. Louis is all Claudia has, and Louis was living his life half in love with humanity. Claudia is a grown ass woman who human society is incapable of seeing as anything other than a child. She couldn't live life alongside him. Mingling with the artists and drinking with the philosophers is not in the cards for her. Add to that the immeasurable baggage of their entire relationship and you see why she has to find something else. She needed a place where people understood her existence, to be around people who didn't curse her into existence, to not have someone's emotional state depend on her, to not live in fear of the day someone else catches Louis's eye and she becomes a second priority again. Enter The Théâtre des Vampires: a community with a promise of understanding. They turned out to be an absolute madhouse, but can we really fault her for being seduced by this dream? After New Orleans? After Romania? Is it really a choice if the other option is an eternity alone?

I love Louis, he's my favorite character in this show, but I'm gonna say it: I personally blame Louis 90%. Because first of all, the issue isn't that Louis couldn't block off his mind or what have you. I can't blame him for not having the mental capacity or whatever to do so. And I won't blame Claudia for being unhappy and wanting to find somewhere she felt she belonged. It's like Daniel said, Louis chose Lestat over Claudia time and time again, small wonder she felt resentment toward him and Lestat, especially considering everything they went through only for Louis to protect him and choke her for trying to finish their maker off. Should they have dipped the moment they saw Lestat on the wall? Yes. However, they both made the decision to stay, and they came up with a plan. That made Claudia feel secure. When Louis realized Armand knew the truth, he should have told Claudia that the entire plan they made to protect themselves was null and void. Because mind you, he knew before she even joined. She never knew the truth of the danger she was in, until Armand threw the knowledge in her face. If he'd told her, they either would've made plans to run or she would've moved differently than she was. He kept her blind and that put her at more risk than him just telling her.
