I’m glad Aki is doing better and thankful it never developed into Sepsis. I’m recovering from Sepsis and Septic shock myself, and guys Joey isn’t lying it’s something that you definitely don’t want. Only took a week of flu like symptoms for me to be hospitalised, and less than 24hrs before I put myself into a coma. Ended up with multi organ failure, the doctors giving me a 30% chance to live. I’m forever grateful and fortunate to be here today. Been hospitalised since July 21st 2021 aged 23, I’m still recovering in a care home and awaiting surgery to amputate my feet, because of my body shutting down causing nerve damage. 2 years 5 months and still going strong. Please everyone if you feel like there’s something wrong, even if it’s something small, check if there’s a flu spike in your area, if there’s any bugs that are being spread and check with your family if there’s any hereditary problems. There isn’t much research in Sepsis so please be careful everyone 💚

I surprised it’s happening to a woman in Japan because I’ve always found their public toilets are very good. But I have heard of it happening I places where women don’t want to be “caught short” while out in public because the women’s toilets are no-existent (ie use the guys’s toilets) or really unsafe or disgusting. So women don’t take the risk by drinking a lot of water :-(

To the women who read these comments, advice from someone who has had chronic bladder infections. 1. Stay hydrated. Drink AT LEAST 1.5litres a day. But more is definitely better. 2. Do not hold in your pee!!! 3. Make sure you pee it all out when you do so. If not it will go all the way back to the urinary tract. 4. Do not wash the inside of your vag with soap! It does that for you already! Only use water!! 5. If you feel like you do everything right but still get UTI's often, you should get it checked out by your doctor. You may have a narrowing of the urethra. It is not the most fun procedure but better than getting your bladder and kidneys messed up. 6. UTIS also is hereditary! If it's a common problen in your family than thats why you also have it often. Which is what caused my chronic UTI's. 7. Pee right after intercourse! It washes away all bacteria! I hope Aki will be okay!

I'm glad that Aki is okay! Yeah no dehydration and lack of water is scary. In my experience, when I was 14 I went to class late, my vision (not exaggerating) was like TV static. There were actual dark spots in my vision and I couldn't focus. Eventually I asked to go to the nurse's office. When walking down the hallway to the stairs, I would black out but somehow be moving still. I genuinely have no clue how I made it down the horrid middle school staircase nor to the office. Later I'd go to the doctor and find out the reason. Drink water! It's more important than you think.

Glad to hear she is doing better now. Yes, UTI is very common in females and despite all the precautions I took, I used to get it at least 2-3 times /year. For any ladies who might be reading this, the one thing that has helped me is D-mannose, which makes the bacteria less "sticky" and get flushed out much easier 😊

It's called "acute pyelonephritis", basically Upper UTI. It is indeed more common for women to have UTI. Holding you urine in too often for example can give you UTI. I'm so glad that Aki is okay and that you are recovering too. You did a great job of explaining everything, Joey; I'm saying this as a nurse :) UTIs and AKIs (acute kidney infection/injury, depending on the mechanism of illness) are very serious and can be deadly. If you're not hydrated, your body's natural bacteria can attack back because your body will be making less urine, which leaves your private area "unrinsed." Your urine is sterile, wo not only are you removing waste when you pee, you are cleaning everything out, including bacteria that could be going up your urethra and into your urinary tract. If your kidneys are working too hard, such as they are when one is dehydrated, your body could be filtering out more nitrogen than normal (this lab level is called BUN = blood urea nitrogen; normal is 10 - 20 mg per dL), we call this Acute Kidney Injury. This can also happen if you fall and suffer muscle damage, a high stress situation, physical trauma, and more. Your kidneys control your blood pressure and circulation; you need to protect and support your kidneys! Advice: DRINK WATER Your urine is meant to be yellow and clear, and it should never be painful to pee. Yellow means you are getting the normal levels of BUN, sodium, and other unneeded material out of the body. Watery clear might mean you are just urinating out extra water that you don't need - drink electrolyte drinks like Gatorade or Pedialyte instead of water. Amber or dark urine means you have too much extra material being taken out, so it's best to drink water at this time. As your urine gets lighter, switch to Gatorade/Pedialyte to not get too low. ** Please drink Gatorade/anything aside from water, black coffee, or unsweetened tea when doing an activity where you sweat a lot or are in hot weather. You can be losing your electrolytes in your sweat and drinking water only waters the levels down more. This can lead to a loss of consciousness, low blood pressure, excessive urination, and nausea. You need proper levels of electrolytes to live and function normally. Without sodium/potassium, you can have seizures, muscle spasms, and paralysis. Abnormal potassium levels can lead to heart rhythm changes, which can be deadly. Magnesium and calcium also assist with your heart pumping normally. SEX ED: This is why we all need to urinate after sex; it greatly reduces the risk of UTIs by clearing out everything in the urethra. Remember, this can happen to everyone, so you need to make sure to do this AFTER having sex/masturbating. Also, ladies and those with similar anatomy, wipe front to back, or wipe the front and then the back. This helps to avoid getting bacteria from your feces anywhere near your urethra. If you use more paper, it's okay; your body will thank you for the effort you put into taking care of it.

Hey Joey! I’m so glad to hear Aki is doing a lot better and that she is keeping up with her water intake! My story doesn’t initially have a happy ending, but we’ll get there…I was in college and H1N1 was running rampant around campus-I caught it and was sick for 4 weeks. I went to the student clinic that just so happened to be located at the hospital across from campus. The Doctor there prescribed Ibuprofen and rest for a week. I also had a UTI. A week passes by and the body aches increase. I go home for the weekend and my parents say “I just don’t look good”. My Dad drives me back to SF ( I went to University of San Francisco) and on the way he says “let’s stop by the clinic just in case” we go, I see the same doctor and he notices my eyes are yellowish and recommends going to the E.R. Downstairs…We go and I pass out going through security. I wake up in a room with 4 Doctors and a bunch of nurses. Diagnosis: I have 26% bacteria in my blood, I’m Septic, and my Kidneys and Liver are failing-I was 21. Long story shorter, I get admitted, rushed to the OR, Dialysis catheters are placed and I begin Dialysis 15 hours later. My liver recovers, but my Kidneys are shot. I need a Transplant. My Mom ends up being a match after 8 MONTHS of testing and the transplant is Successful 🎉 Until…2 years later my Mom’s kidney fails ( I’m still in college btw) I have to go back on dialysis for 3.5 years (and 1 Brain tumor later until I receive the call that I have a match!🎉🎉🎉 Second Transplant on March 24th 2015 and here I am Alive and Pretty Great almost 9 years later 😊 Please, Tell Aki I am SO HAPPY SHE IS WELL and to drink water always❤❤❤❤ I love both of your channels, you both have helped me through my dialysis sessions with your awesome content! I've had both things happen to me on different occasions. I got kidney stones back in college and, at the time, I hated drinking water with a burning fiery passion. I learned to enjoy water after I started going to the gym. The UTI happened years later, I was taking a medication for some severe back pains I was experiencing, but for some reason it numbed my bladder, hence I didn't know I was holding my pee until I was about to burst. The infection got so bad that I was taken to the hospital and I was going in and out of consciousness on the stretcher; it took a week in the hospital and then some therapy at home until I flushed everything out. Needles to say that now I don't drink anything other than water and I try not to hold my pee unless it's strictly necessary😅

I have been watching you guys for YEARS! I never comment lol. But I am in nursing school and as soon as you said Acute Kidney Infection I was so happy that you guys caught it so early!!! It is no joke. I am a PCT in the hospital while I am in school and I can't tell you how many times people wait too long and it doesn't end well or it is a fight for their life. Good job Joey for getting your girl to the hospital and not just waiting for it to go away. It doesn't just go away.... you die! Love you guys big! So glad she is okay!

I’m glad she’s doing better and she got the care when she did! My mother developed sepsis as a result of cancer complications and we caught it at home. As soon as they notice bacteria in the blood stream it’s go-time so it sounds like y’all had the perfect chance. Wishing her well and will definitely check out her video. aah yes UTIs are very common amongst us girlies 😔 as someone who is studying womens health, i recommend: drink enough water, always pee after sex, and remember to wipe front to back after going to the toilet so you dont get nasty bacteria near the urinary tract. Stay healthy ppl!

So glad that Aki is doing much better. I had this exact issue when I was in my late teens, uti that became an acute kidney infection but add to that impacted bowels. 😢 I had a fever of 103 and horrible shaking and chills, couldn't keep food and fluids down so went to the emergency clinic and sure enough, "AKI". They gave me a shot of penicillin and basically watched me for an hour or so to see if my fever would come down, or else I'd have to go to the ER. Thankfully it didn't escalate to hospitalization and I was sent home with antibiotics, but really the importance of DRINKING WATERRRR, not holding your pee, and also enough fiber in your diet can't be understated!

Hey Joey, I am really happy you made a video about this because I can relate to Aki's experience SO HARD right now. I am very prone to getting UTIs and used to get them once or twice a year, but have had three in the past six months. They are horrible, and I had a very adverse reaction to one of the antibiotics I was given. Not staying well hydrated enough is what I believe was my problem as well. I have reminders on my phone and connected to my watch to remind myself to drink water, and that's been really helpful. I saw a urologist recently as well and she gave me some other good preventative techniques. It might be worth talking to a urologist if she's prone to getting them even after staying well hydrated because there are more aggressive preventative measures you can take. So far, staying well hydrated has been working for me. :) Glad Aki is feeling better, and really glad you are bringing visibility to the topic.

As an individual constantly working in the medical field, it is a relief that there are still PSAs around to educate the community. There is so much to learn when I am continuously learning different conditions. Thanks, Joey, for doing your part to help society with this knowledge. Also, I am so grateful that Aki is okay and that she is taking countermeasures to ensure her health is in good condition.

I’m dealing with Covid at the moment, but with Aki being prescribed with antibiotics quite a few times it also reminds me to bring up that she may want to take some probiotics if she’s still feeling a bit icky later. Last year I had surgery and they made me take antibiotics after as precaution for infection, but then I got an infection and I had to take antibiotics again. I went back to work, then I got Covid and my uvula swelled up so bad I couldn’t breathe or swallow so I went to the ER and was prescribed more antibiotics and a steroid because the doctor wasn’t sure what to do and hoped that it would kill whatever I had since I had already had Covid for over a week at that point. I was feeling really gross, and I had said how I already had antibiotics twice in the past few months so I was afraid of being resistant to them if prescribed the same one so he prescribed me a different one. But as I was finishing that round of antibiotics I noticed my tongue was white and furry and almost like I had thrush. Because apparently if you have too many antibiotics your body can over fight and then it creates the white furry tongue and oral thrush so taking probiotics is needed sometimes to get things back to normal. Don’t know if she needs to know this but just thought I’d mention it! I hate how pretty much a year later and I have Covid again 😢

Hey Joey! been a huge fan of you and Aki's channels since 2016, I've had numerous AKI's over the past year but luckily never went septic. Interstitial Cystitis is a often overlooked condition which can also cause AKI's. Currently in bed with one rn and while I'm so sorry you guys went through this I feel very comforted and seen rn so thank you!

Thank You for sharing this it is indeed a great PSA to share! Glad to know Aki is doing a lot better! Kindey infections are no joke and I myself last year suffered from one also got very lucky and caught it on time and it didn't turn into sepsis! And its nothing to be embarrassed about especially for us the ladies who don't hydrate enough because Joey is right a lot of us don't and end up learning the hard way!

Yo Joey, hope everything gets better, it 100% will. My uncle died of Sepsis 2 days ago from today, and it was hard to deal with, but it didn’t help since he didn’t have the best medicine. Thank goodness Aki is doing better now, and absolute warrior.
