We’re gonna have some FUN. The mother of all videos on how Joseph Smith was absolutely, without a doubt, 100% a treasure digger. Tons of time and research went into this one, a few bucks on my Patreon from a few people really makes it all worth it. / nuancehoe
When it comes to destroying Hannah Stoddard’s statements, I leave no stone unturned! Or hat unlooked in. 🎩🪄
Check out PART 1 for more context!!
“I left Mormon Stories Podcast on an LDS Fundie Overdose. Here's the deal with Rod, John, and Jenn.”
• I left Mormon Stories ...
🙋‍♀️Today I’ll be answering:
🪨 What is this fundie science-denying side of Mormonism? And why do they believe what they believe? Where do they get off?
🪨 What is treasure digging? Was Joseph Smith defrauding people with a stone before founding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? And what sources can I trust?
🪨 Does it mean he wasn’t a prophet? Is treasure digging doctrinal orrrrr occultic?
🪨 How many times can NuanceHoe make me laugh in 3 hours while providing life changing insights, research, and sources on Mormon history?
You’ve maybe seen Hannah Stoddard on her latest appearance on Midnight Mormons “debunk” this very inconvenient truth.
You’ve maybe seen her on the back cover of that book your Mormon parents gave you called “Faith Crisis” with the weird, sultry girl on the cover whose eyes follow you wherever you go.
But if you have ultra right-wing traditionalist Mormon parents and you happen to be an ex-Mormon, you have no doubt seen Hannah haphazardly glued over your face in your family photos.
This is my life’s work! Thanks for watching!

I was in Salt Lake City in 1995, as a tourist. I went to have lunch and there was a newspaper stand. I picked up the paper and read "The devil has a free hand in Provo". As I read further on I realized what the shocking problem was: kids were having baseball practice on Monday nights.Enough said.

Yes, the LDS church and every other church are simply gaslighting organizations. They prey upon people's desire to find meaning and a larger context for their lives. Imagine your father only telling your sibling the most important information for your life, but not conveying any of that information to you, other than to listen to your brother. He can tell you anything at any time, but he doesn't? Pretty ridiculous.

Well, technically, you know...she's sort of right. Joseph Smith was not a digger. He was the "looker". He was the guy who looked at the magic rock and told the all-day suckers...er...I mean...the clients/investors/associates where to dig. And they never actually dug up any treasure, even though they worked really hard at digging FOR treasure...on account of it being slippery and concealed by enchantments and spells. Joseph Smith was the "treasure finder" and the treasure that he found was...drum roll...the gullibility of other people. And the fantastic thing about gullibility is that it's a renewable resource.
@randyjordan5521
@randyjordan5521 Год назад
Yep. Some Mormons try to defend Joseph by saying that he was only hired by the old guy Josiah Stowell to dig. Problem with that argument is that Joseph lived 150 miles from Stowell. Stowell could have hired any number of laborers in his area to just dig dirt. He hired Joseph solely because, as Joseph's mother said, "on account of having certain keys by which he could see things invisible to the natural eye."

I’m going to school for anthropology and let me tell you, if there was ANY proof the Book of Mormon was real and we had a PRIMARY source for ancient Americans that spelled out so much of their culture and history every single class I have would cover it. There’s no way any historian would pass up that knowledge just because they don’t like Mormonism
@randyjordan5521

That's a point I've made countless times when discussing these issues with Mormons over the last 27 years. If the Book of Mormon people really existed, our history and anthropology books would be chock-full of information about their culture. The evidence for their existence would be as abundant as it is for the Mayans, Aztecs, Iroquois, Sioux, Cherokee, Inca, Inuit, and every other large pre-Columbian tribe.

@@nuancehoe Yo Carah: I came across that Midnight Mormons video a week or so ago, and I made a lot of comments there in which I detail the documentation for Joseph Smith's 1820s treasure-digging. Hannah Stoddard's premise, of course, is that all such reports were fabricated by the bitter apostate Philastus Hurlbut. Problem with her premise is that Hurlbut joined the church in late 1832, and didn't leave the church or begin to investigate Joseph's past until late 1833. That's important because there were numerous published reports of Joseph's folk-magic activities published in 1830-31. So Hannah's entire premise is bogus. Hannah responded to a few commentors on that video, mostly thanking people for her work. I posted some material which opposes her views directly to her, and she did not respond. That tells me that she knows that she's totally wrong, but she refuses to admit it, because that would destroy her "Joseph Smith Foundation."

The church pretends they ALWAYS taught JS used the stone in a hat, and all of the members pretend that isn't a giant lie. What it boils down to is people like their life as church members, and do not want to look too closely at their beliefs. They don't ask questions because they honestly don't want to know the answers. I have family members who fit this description, and I am very familiar with the mentality. The LDS church created an entire dialect to avoid using plain language and to obscure and confuse meanings.

I'm a former Mormon Fundamentalist, but not just in the sense of strictness of doctrinal interpretation, but rather by having belonged to a separate "Fundamentalist" Church (but not the FLDS). I became the "go to guy" in our church for new investigators, and for writing doctrinal materials. I definitely left all that, and all forms of Mormonism and all forms of organized religion as well, about 8 years ago. I'm now 69 years old. From my viewpoint, the mainstream Mormon Church today is B***S*** on two accounts: 1) Joseph taught that ordinances and doctrines do not change, and that the current-day Mormon Church is not the same as the original Mormon Church on dozens of critical, fatal doctrinal and ordinances issues. 2) The whole business turns out to be nonsense to start with, and could not be of the divine no matter how you interpret it or twist things. In our Church, we were a hell of a lot more honest about Mormon history and doctrine than the mainstream church, but we still drew the line about things touching on Joseph Smith. But in the end, the fruits were not apparent in our Fundamentalist Church any more than in the mainstream Mormon Church, and so concluded that it was time to go. It was at that time that the nature of what Joseph's character turned out to be became apparent. This is a fabulous presentation in this video. So well researched and presented. Thank you, and Good Job, Carah. I also really like your rhetoric and sense of humor. :) :) I'd love you to interview me on your show. I do live in central Utah. Have stories, will travel.

At the beginning, Ms. Stoddard was talking about Nephites in Europe and that sounded so preposterous, until I remembered the "Knights of Ni". "Ni" is pronounced "nee"...just like the pronunciation of the "ne" in Nephi. What do knights do? They fight. When a Knight of Ni fights with another Knight of Ni, it's a Ni fight. This order was apparently a thing in Europe and somewhat famous in Britain. I believe a scholar going by the name of Montgomery ("Monty") Python has produced some documentary films, with reenactments and everything. Look for "The Knights who say Ni". The documentary shows how this order celebrated their Niphite heritage with the greeting "ni". They are even referred to as the "keepers of the sacred word."

@@randyjordan5521 Yes. I believe the migration of coconuts in chiasmus formations, spelling out the letter "NHM" at both ends, is a possibility that can not be proven wrong. They float. And when touched by the finger of God (praised be that Mighty Finger!), they migrate hither and thither as the spirit of God (praised be the Gaseous Entity of Ethereal Majesty!) dictates. Not only that, but they can also be used as substitutes for either horses or shod tapirs and simulate the sound approaching cavalry. Upon hearing the sound of coconuts approaching, the European peasants in the rural areas adjacent to the cities and fortresses would sound the first warnings: "The Ni-Fights are coming! The Ni-fights are coming! Let us hope the Laminates are not following close behind (cursed be the swarthy Laminates and the felonious Formicans!)" I believe that's what is shown in some early manuscripts. According to one account, one peasant, frightened at the thought of approaching Laminates, turned to another, even more frightened peasant and said: "Hey, European in your pants...or is that some apple juice that you were trying to carry in your pockets?"

There's lots to read about Joseph's practice specifically. It was common at the time to claim to know where treasure was buried by pirates, the spanish, whatever you want, and say that it is protected by magical means where it can dissapear to prevent you getting it. A 'seer' might cast some spell, draw a circle, to make the treasure stay. So some mistake in digging it up, or in that ritual could be claimed as an excuse as to why the task has to be abandoned. Of course people will say sources claiming Joseph did exactly this are biased, but that's basically how it worked. I personally suspect that for this con, it would have been common for the 'seer' to be long gone by the time the mark realized there's nothing to find. At least I would be! For example you could sell them a fake map or give a revelation about a location, and then disappear.

Random sort of… I come from an American Baptist fundamentalist background and we were taught the same disdain towards Darwin…. I just wanted to say that I recently began to study his life/marriage and I am so very impressed with how much they gave each other respect to believe/have faith or not and to challenge each other with thoughts while maintaining a loving relationship. Super admirable, IMO. I was taught to “laugh” at Darwin’s ideas and fast forward a few and as I read his ideas I find myself nodding and saying “yes, fantastic point” 😅

That brings credibility to his work in a way I was never afforded during my years in fundamentalism as a child. It is unbelievable just how wrong Sister Stoddards is on so many things, but hey, making up a bunch of BS is the Mormon way! I wonder if she ever considers just how much education and research real scientist and scholars have to do to bring us the truth. When you believe that a god gave a man revelations by way of a rock in a hat, well you are capable of believing absolute anything with no evidence required.
@TEAM__POSEID0N
@TEAM__POSEID0N Год назад
Well, for believers who don't understand complicated things like logic and evidence, the things that Sister Stoddard says make perfect sense. "Hey, I wanna believe that and Sister Stoddard said that what I wanna believe is true, and she made some statements that sort of sound like fancy arguments, so it must be true!" That type of person, ultimately, has always been the target audience for apologists. It doesn't matter that the "arguments" of the faithful apologist are nothing more than a collection of bald assertions.

In the Stoddards' book proving that Joseph Smith only used the Urim & Thummim for translation, their arguments would be a lot more persuasive if Joseph didn't use the term "seer stone" and "urim and thummim" interchangeably. For example, Wilford Woodruff's journal says: Dec 27, 1841: "27th * The Twelve or a part of them spent the day with Joseph the Seer & he unfolded unto themmany glorious things of the kingdom of God the privileges & blessings of the priesthood &c. Ihad the privilege of seeing for the first time in my day the URIM & THUMMIM." Also: In 1841, apostles Wilford Woodruff and George A. Smith confiscated several seer stones and grimoires from convert William Mountford in Staffordshire, England. The grimoires were destroyed and seer stones were sent to Nauvoo. Joseph Smith examined the stones and stated that they were "Urim and Thummim as good as ever was upon the earth" but that they had been "consecrated to devils." Stapley, Johnathan. The Power of Godliness: Mormon Liturgy and Cosmology. Oxford University Press, 2018: page 110.

Ok, I'm gonna just jump in here with some Hebrew. In the beginning, God created the heavens (הַשָּׁמַיִם) and the earth (הָאָרֶץ). The word for heaven in the passage is sha'mayim (שָּׁ'מַיִם). The word for water in Hebrew is Mayim (מָּיִם). When you add the sheen (שָּׁ) onto the beginning of it...[you can find this on any Hebrew prefix webpage] it makes it say something else. The sheen as a prefix means "that" or "which" so, shamayim means "that water." The word for earth here is Eretz (אֶרֶץ). This word means earth, as in dirt, soil, ground, or land. What this verse really says is...In the beginning God created the water and the land. I don't get why even the Jewish people will say it means heavens and earth.

When about 5, I remember setting in a goofball baptist church in absolute amazement that people were actually pretending to believe the nonsense the man in the suit in the front was taying. My mother kept sending me "Christian" nonsense even into my 50s, and I would just through it away. I finally told her ... knock it off or I will never speak to you again. I had always planned on having it out with her at some point ( I have Dissociative Identity disorder from coming from a violent dysfunctional nightmare) . I did go help her when she was dying from cancer.... and tried to force reality on her that she was really an evil rotten, self serving failure as a human being living a lie.....I decided instead to let her die with her lies She loved her Lies not her children and paid for it by not really having relationships with her children.
