I think it still shows a good point. It shows how much variation there can be shot to shot even when you know the range. Conditions change. You can see even in this repeatability test you can still misjudge and miss, so its even more complicated at varying ranges expecting a first shot hit in a hunting scenario and not on a bench. Especially out past 500 to 600 yards Atleast thats how i see it.

I would say your video proved 200% that nobody should be taking 600 yd shots in a hunting situation if you can't even do it from a bench and looking at your misses on video. You need to be able to shoot 100% from the bench at whatever distance you plan to hunt at. So keep moving them closer until you hit 10 for 10 in hunting positions "not a bench" and in all weather conditions and that is your MAX hunting distance. As for the marine. That jarheads jar was mostly empty. I didn't even make it a quarter of the way through the video.

This is not how it works. Different ranges mean different wind holds. And you run the risk of getting confused. And you’re on a bench which is not field conditions. So this is bull shit.

Looks like fun. The Backfire challenge was 100 targets at unknown distance 0-600 from field positions. 10 targets at known distance, all the same distance, and from a bench rest has zero similarity. All the same looked like a fun range session.

the challenge wasn't to shoot targets at unknown distances out to 600 yards. hitting targets at unknown distances beyond point blank range would be pure luck. the point of him doing it this way --> if he can hit a series of targets at 620k then he can hit them at 210 or 340. he doesn't need to shot $400 worth of ammo to make his point, which was about recoil, rear rest (recoil & stability), wind, barrel heating up and how all that affects the shot.

Unfortunately deer don't just line up all at the same range. hell I can hit multiple targets at 1000yds once I'm dialed in, its the the scanning, ranging, and wind, the error in parallax, all kinds of things when you are changing distance that causes misses.

When I was a teenager in Flagstaff, AZ, I met an old man who hunted mountain lion and filled his tag (or got his desired quota...I don't remember how that worked back in the 70's) every season. I learned my first lesson from him before I ever went on a hunt. He told me that if I was shooting at a range I was not 100% sure of a well-placed hit, I was shooting too far and I should learn how to get closer by watching cats hunt. So I did go home and watch our cats hunt and practiced on a local bunch of rabbits with a borrowed Marlin .22LR. The furthest shot I have taken during a hunt was 76 yards on a Whitetail and most were within 25 yards. I don't gauge success by "how far I took that shot and got my game", I gauge by how close I got and took my game. Some of the close shots were archery, but everything over 30 yards or so were rifle. I feel the same way about the spastic firing off of full-auto, it's a total waste, so I shot every shot as if it were the most important shot I can take, but also, not take. If I'm not sure, I 'm not touching the trigger. In the '08 deer season, I did make a bad judgement call and went for a shot at 296 yards according to my laser range finder, but the wind was swirling and I missed. It was my first time using a range finder as well as my first time hunting with a scoped rifle. It simply did not seem like hunting to me. I saw that as verification I should stick with what I know works and not care about what anyone else is doing. It's a mistake to campare myself to anyone else anyway. If anyone else hunts with a scoped rifle at longe range, I just hope they have the skills to be sure of their shots because everything else is a waste. I can hear my grandpa's voice now, "Waste not, want not." He was 35 when the great depression hit, so I see his wisdom as the real deal.

Don't take this personally. But from what you are doing is completely different from the backfire challenge. You have completely missed the point. The point of the backfire challenge is that people tend to think they have more ability to shoot at long distance than they actually are capable of. You're a good shooter but you are doing more of bench rest competition style, whereas the whole premise of the backfire challenge is in the field using your hunting gear and experience and gun. He doesn't want someone with 25 lb 50 caliber Barrett to do the challenge because it's not realistic that anyone is going pack a 25 lb gun to hunt with in the mountains, hiking in. Just like you Shooting from your bench with your favorite gun rest isn't realistic that you would pack all that to go hunting with. I get it. You build custom rifles for long range shooting or hunting and you use the bench and rests to make sure your customers are getting the highest quality custom rifle they expect. But more to the point. Take your customers into account of what are they able to do with that rifle vs what you're able to do and I'd bet there's a wide margin between you and them. That's what the backfire challenge is about. What range is realistic for most hunters. Just my opinion. If you really want to prove it why not get in touch with Jim at backfire and take the challenge. What you were doing isn't as much like the challenge he set up at all.

Good shooting. But the test is in hunting conditions. Different elevations, shooting positions, and distances. You didn’t even have to dial different dope or get off the bench with a rear rest? Still like the video, and hope more people do more like it. I want to see someone smash this challenge.

Proving a rifle is one thing, proving a shooter is something all together different. Shooting off a bench even in the wind is not hunting conditions. Having said that running sixty percent on gallon milk jugs at 600 + yards (1 moa x 1.5 moa approx.) i would say is better than 85 percent of hunters out there can do. Run the test again with one of your builds, same yardage, 9 jugs (got milk), hunting caliber (6.5 PRC, 280 Ackley, 270 win or short mag). Three shots prone off bipod, three shots off a back pack prone and three shots off shooting sticks sitting. One minute to fire each three shot run. This much more simulates hunting conditions. What Jim proved was how difficult long range hunting is. Can you get the range correct, can you shoot from multiple positions, your dope after traveling and the weather changes that affect it. You just missed 40% from a bench, same known yardage and position. Nice rifle. I love the ballistics of my 28 Nosler but it’s so finicky to load for.

I think part of the original challenge is shooting different distances from different shooting positions. You don't take a bench hunting and you dont wait for perfect conditions to go hunting. Also a hunter would probability try to close the gap if they saw an animal at 1000 yards. Just my thoughts, but good on ya for having a crack.

While I definitely appreciate the video, and your perspective, this is an apples to oranges comparison to the Backfire challenge. Jim made it a "hunting scenario" challenge, in which the shooter had to range the target at any given time, and adjust to parameters. Which includes a lack of a rear support of the stock, using only what you carry while hunting. I don't know anyone that carries a bench, a stool, and front and rear supports of the rifle while hunting.

This isn't the 'Backfire Challenge'. Lose the shooting bench and shoot from field positions. Vary the range of the targets so you can't directly use hold data from previous shots. Even with those advantages 60% hit rate with a precision rifle from a bench is pretty clear evidence that shooting at game at 600 yards is a recipe for plenty of wounded animals.

Only thing this video has in common with Backfires is the milk jugs. His jugs were setup at unknown distances hiding in sagebrush. Ranging the distance was 80% of the battle. I was surprised the Marine didn't mil the jugs. Oh and they didn't have a Benchrest. Otherwise good shooting.

This is not the backfire challenge... The whole point of his challenge is targets at unknown distances, in different directions...this resets for each shot, to show weakness in the shooters ability to adapt.... unrealistic for most situations, as most likely you only have one animal you are taking, but still it was a challenge...I think getting as close as possible to the animal is the ethical solution...plus the stalk, is more impressive than the shot.

You’re kind of missing Backfire’s point. His whole point was based off ethical hunting at varying ranges and conditions. Muzzle brakes suck for hunting, so not having one brought some realism to the challenge, as well as using a common hunting caliber. You have skill for sure, but you’re sitting on a bench at a range, shooting at a known distance multiple times. My 9 year old can do this once dope is established. And how many hunts in the mountains do you bring a rear bag to? Backfire successfully showed how variables can cause even confident folks to miss and injure animals at longer ranges. Good shooting nonetheless! Enjoyed the video!

This isn’t exactly what @backfire did in his challenge. The guy he had with him had a lot of different scenarios at different ranges, uphill down hill and none were from a bench that I remember and no video reply to change his dope. Some were hanging from trees so he couldn’t even really tell where he was missing. You had a much higher hit ratio but not an apples to apples challenge at all.

Thanks for putting this video up. I really enjoyed watching it. Props on your shooting. I agree all would have been kill shots. But, It seems you missed the point of what Jim was trying to prove on the Backfire channel. Jim was saying shooting at 600 yards when hunting is much harder than what most people think. It wasn't about shooting a target at a fixed range from a bench. It was range the target at varying distances, dial any adjustments needed and then shoot the target in a limited time frame. Bench shooting is fun and good practice but not the same as when you are in the field.

I always enjoy shooting videos like this, but in most cases, they don't relate to the kind of shooting challenges I face when hunting in the coastal mountains of Oregon. Everyone shooting long range fights the wind, but here, we have to deal with shooting uphill or downhill and with changes in elevation and temperature. Nothing is ever the same for long around here, so the perfect scope settings you used early this morning will probably only get you close later in the day. The variables are enough to make you crazy sometimes. Also, I don't want to be disrespectful to great shooters like Erik Cortina, but we don't shoot with six-thousand-dollar custom rifles. We shoot off the shelf hunting rifles. I guess it's all fun, no matter how you do it!

Hi, nice to see this kind of challenge. I watched the target video closely and I’d be curious to know if the first “miss” left a mark on the top of the jug. I think it was the 3rd miss high and right that was furthest away but by a few inches. Nice shooting it’s a rifle obviously well built. I have been building rifles, mostly rimfire, for a number of years. I’ve got some health issues they say will limit my mobility to where I can’t shoot. I’ve wanted to shoot long range again and an area club just finished a 600 yard range I’m buying components as I can afford them and hope to be able to build the gun and purchase loading supplies yet this year. Medical bills are crushing me as I’ve had 8 operations in the past 14 months. Watching people like yourself keeps the fire burning to stay strong and reach that goal so I have that to remember. Thanks for going out in the rain and wind to put this together.

Barrel too hot or what happened? If I was to attempt this challenge, I would not shoot more than 3 shots until the barrel cooled off completely. Furthest I’ve shot at an animal is 500 yards and I have not had to shoot more than 2 shots.

Having all your targets set at a known range and shooting from a bench defeats the whole purpose of the challenge. Nice shooting anyway but don't see how it relates to backfires video

Your chalenge is not the way it was done. Backfire challenge is about hunting. You shoot from a bench - at a one distance. Try it like the original challenge.

I did see the challenge shoot, it did replicate field conditions and a fairly ordinary shooter...with a commonly used chambering. Much like what we experience in the western hunting conditions.

First, good shooting. Very nice gun. Second, not really in the spirit of the challenge …… I think it’s real world hunting conditions of varying distances …… setting up, ranging, calculating, and shooting… not a set distance on a bench.

You are shooting off a bench. You shoot at game off a bench? How many shots you put down range before you filmed? This is stupid

Not a comparable test when all the targets are at the same range. That was the point of his test. First round impacts at varying distance.

Not even close to the same. Backfire challenge was unknown distances out to 600 yards. Plus improvised rests one would find while hunting. Have you ever hunted? I have never seen anyone carry a shooting bench along on a hunting trip.

Boo, this totally misses the point

I’m sorry, 60% from a bench (where most of your misses were high) does NOT instill the confidence you seem to have in your abilities to shoot at deer size targets at those ranges. I would not hunt under the assumption that a deer size vital is any larger than those jugs. You are proving Backfire to be right.

Not the same challenge, you kinda whimped out there , not even close to a hunting scenario

Good video except my shoulder started hurting just thinking about 100 shots from the 300 Win.mag, muzzle brake or not.
