On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share my review of 3 remarkable fall tomato varieties. Growing fall tomatoes can be challenging! Gardeners often run out of warmth before the tomatoes ripen, so choosing the correct tomato varieties that can handle cool fall weather is critical!
I grew three determinate tomatoes in my fall garden: Legend, Red Snapper and Celebrity Plus. These tomatoes had a challenging start to life and were clobbered by 2 tropical storms in a 3 week period, yet miraculously, these remarkable tomato plants recovered, regrew and produced lots of tomatoes. This is the result of my fall tomato growing experiment!

Do it. It's an excellent tomato. It's as low maintenance as a beefsteak tomato can get.

Hi! Excited to plant my Davidor shallot seeds after winter solstice. Celebrity doesn't work for me in 9b 🤔 my fall tomato pics: bella rosa, large red cherry and now Tropic VFN (so far, good 👍🏽)

It certainly should. Celebrity is a heat set tomato. If you're struggling with pollination, you need to plant them earlier and use shade cloth. Most tomatoes will work for you if you follow my shade cloth method: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cO-U1wYGZ8Q.htmlsi=P34Tm1GXzJvsYV0M

I'm in Houston Tx 9B and I've had great luck with Yellow Patio Choice this fall. It's a yellow cherry tomato and is SUPER delicious. I love to cook with it. Because it's a cherry, it ripened fast and has been producing since mid October; my other fall tomatoes have only given me a couple of fruits. One thing, the packet size is a LIE; they say it's 15-18" tall and mine are in the neighborhood of 4-5 feet. It's worth it though. I've got some more already started for next spring to start under milk jug greenhouses.

I would assume all determinate tomatoes will grow to be 30-48 inches. I would assume all indeterminate tomatoes will grow to be 6-10ft. Tomatoes always need more infrastructure than advertised. When they come up with those sizes, they assume you have a 3-4 month growing season and the plants will be killed by frost. That isn't the case in climates like ours, so the sizes don't mean much.

@@2MinuteGardenTips Interesting! Thank you, I have had several that are way larger than the package says, and was wondering why they were so off. That is not a little difference!

I'll have to try Legend and Siletz but some in pots. Fall tomatoes have been a bust for me two years in a row. Last year I did indeterminates and thought that was the problem due to timing. This year I did cherry tomatoes and determinates and still failed. I think my weather is the problem. September was so hot I wasn't getting any fruit set even with the cherry tomatoes until it was turning into October. Then right before Halloween we had two nights in a row of hard freezes (24-25F). They survived the first night but the second night is what killed them off.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 7 месяцев назад
For fall tomatoes to work, I've found they need to planted out much earlier, but underneath shade cloth to protect them. The day length gets so short starting in September that the days to maturity on the packet don't work. "Days to maturity" assumes your days are getting longer and longer in the spring. It works in the other direction in the fall since the days contract, so you actually need to add weeks to the advertised maturity dates. That's the real trick. Whatever the days to maturity says, add 60 days. That's what you really need in the fall to ripen a decent crop.

@2MinuteGardenTips I'll try one more time next year before completely giving up but I think my weather is the problem. We stayed so hot through September that all my plants were dropping blooms. By the time it cooled off enough to set fruit, we had our first hard freeze a few days before Halloween less than a month later. I also had them under shade cloth this year until the beginning of October. That's why I'm thinking of doing some in pots and treating them like early tomatoes that I can bring in and out. After that first hard freeze two nights in a row we didn't have another freeze or frost for almost a month.

I am amazed at how many of my greens are still going. We’ve had several nights in the 20s and I’ve even got new greens sprouting up.🌱

My tomatoes are still alive, but they've taken a beating. We've had 4 nights in the 20's so far and they look hideous. I'm about to let them bite the dust.

@@2MinuteGardenTipshow did celebrity plus taste or how does it compare to sudduth Brandywine?
@olgas2332

How’s the Legend flavor? I got some Legend seeds because of a shipping mix up, and was planning on giving them away since we have extremely limited space (14x15’ community garden plot) and the description didn’t sound too interesting. But now I’m thinking it might be a decent option to succession plant when my non-resistant varieties succumb to fusarium in August…

I personally think it is worth it when I consider yield. Are there better tasting tomatoes? Absolutely. Are these good? I think so, and I've had pretty nice yields from them.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 7 месяцев назад
It's misleading, because tomato flavor this time of year is inferior. They need warm temperatures to develop sugars. They never come out tasting like they do in May and June when it's so cold. Still, the flavor is decent. It's better than anything in a store by a longshot, but it's not fair to compare it to something from summer.

How early do you start your spring tomatoes indoors? I found amazing success this summer and a fall with the determinate Black Sea man! My new favorite tomato!

Usually the first week of February. As an experiment, I started a few early determintes a week ago with the intent to plant in February under heavy protection, but at a very high risk.

I always grow Celebrity with great results. Mine are also still producing. I have Red Snapper seeds to try for the first time in the spring. I've never grown Legend. Where did you buy your seeds? I'll try them for my fall tomatoes next year. Thanks 😊

When I worked on a farm in NJ, Celebrity was all we grew at the farm. That tomato has been superior since the 90's. I will be trying things again in spring for sure. These seeds came from all over the place. My Red Snapper and Celebrity Plus were from Hoss. Legend, I think I ordered from Tomato Growers from last spring.

I order my seeds online from countless sources. It's typical for me to order from 5-6 places in a year, and sometimes they change. My Red Snapper and Celebrity Plus were from Hoss. Legend, I think I ordered from Tomato Growers from last spring. But I order from many additional places, too.
