On today's 2 minute garden tip, I show you what happened when I covered my cold hardy winter vegetables during a cold snap. Many gardeners fail to cover cold hardy vegetables in cold weather, but is it worth the effort? Are winter crops truly cold tolerant? In this video, I covered my veggies during cold weather and this happened!
While it is true that there are many frost tolerant vegetables that gardeners can grow in winter, not all cold hardy crops are created equal. There is more to cold tolerance than the lowest temperature reached. Whether a plant sustains cold damage depends on the temperatures reached, the duration spent at that temperature, total time below freezing, whether the plants endure repeated freezes or if they have a warm spell in between to recover, etc. This video shows the value of covering plants to keep frost off the surface.
I use the following products* to protect vegetables from cold:

I bought some netting from Amazon for our apple trees this winter and I just laid one down over my strawberries and put some pine needles over it to keep it staying there and they survived the winter. I am in GA and it got down into the signal digits at night.

I've been doing this with milk jugs for years and can confirm its effectiveness. But dont forget to save the bottoms. The work well as water trays for 6 and 4 cell seed trays and smaller pots.

Interesting. I have so many seed trays that I'm good for the rest of my life, I think 😂 The milk jugs only last about 3-5 months before the sun annihilates them and they shatter, so I'm constantly saving mine and tossing old ones that disintegrate.

@@2MinuteGardenTips I save seedling cells from the greenhouse and use them to start my own seeds indoors the next year. I agree the jug tops will only last a few years, but the bottoms hold up longer since I only use them indoors.

Why didn't I follow your excellent advice... I just landed from a trip to Texas to see my family only to find my garden in SoCal received a decimating series of frosty nights. I'm really glad I pruned down the peppers, but I'm having to harvest all the green beefsteak tomatoes if I hope to have anything not brassica. Even the scarlet salvia suffered... time to supplement the hummingbirds. 😮

A lot of times, it's just easier to cover everything. Even if you aren't going to get a frost, there are benefits to covers - keeping insects out, concentrating warmth during the day for faster growth, etc. If you're going to leave on a trip, it's always better to cover with agricultural fabric just to be safe since it lets in light and can stay on indefinitely.

Hi, will clear containers work as well as the frosted looking ones that you use? I have a lot of 1 gallon tea jugs that are completely see-through. Thanks

Yes. As long as they let light in, it's fine. They may work even better.
