Hi, Martin. Greetings from Koh Samui, Thailand, where it is currently a rainy season. Everything is overcast, bland, and relatively boring. I too own an EOS 5. I find it a joy to use, having owned a 5D Mk III and a 5D Mk IV in the past. It's odd that I should see this video now as I'm just going through the frames from a roll of Ilford Delta 400 (like you, developed in 510-Pyro) taken with the Canon, which I use with either the 24 - 105mm lens or the 50mm 1.8. Although I own various other film cameras, I enjoy the convenience of this one - the autofocus and automatic wind-on (and rewind). I generally use it in aperture priority mode and it has never failed to produce good results. I'd recommend the camera to anyone who wants an easy to use 35mm camera.

I bought my copy of EOS 5 new, back in 1995 I think. But my copy is battered, scratched and partly broken, all do still functional to this day. Course it went with me in several war conflicts. And survived. So much about fragility of those plastic cameras. At least this model is "plastic fantastic" in true sense of those words...

Beautiful photographs Martin, I especially loved the one at 11:40 and the one at 23:35 they both are extremely well composed shots. I love my Canon 500N though some times it tends to feel a bit "clinical" kind of "soul-less" but the practicality and usability of these camera bodies is quite unbeatable, especially considering their bulletproof light meters. Stay awesome and greetings from Greece!

Thanks so glad you found it helpful, the EOS 5 is a bargain for what it can do, it’s stood the test of time and that says a lot about how it’s built,

Another very enjoyable video, thankyou Martin. Love the swan photos! The square format is perfect for them, also the mono of course. They seem to glow. Difficult to choose a favourite, but the texture on the bent necks is beautiful, also like the contrast of the immature bird. (Thank goodness for auto focus!) So glad you have recovered and are getting out with your camera again.

Another enjoyable video Martin. I love the square format for the swan shots. I live in the flats overlooking the Victoria lake and have a canon EOS 3 which I have not used for years you just inspired me to walk down there and get a few shots. Thank you.

Hi Martin, loved the photos as usual! The review was nice to have too as I do have an EF mount 70-200 L lens that I have been hanging on to because I love the tones from that lens. On the digital side I moved away from Canon about 3 years ago and it would be really cool to shoot film with that lens! I might just pick up one of those bodies :-)

I used to own lots of L glass , sadly over the years they have been sold on , I am after the 70 to 200L if one comes up for sale at a decent price, thanks

I still have an EOS5 that I bought new. A very nice camera although I rarely use it now as I find the older film cameras a bit more interesting to use. I do like the eye-tracking AF though - a feature that Canon have finally brought back after all these years! Unfortunately I also sold most of my EF glass when I switched my digital system from Canon to Sony, although I still have a 50mm and a 24-70 f/2.8 L. So I guess I'm still covered for most situations.

I've just purchased one of these cameras from Germany for around €150, so their price is creeping up a little since your video. Thank you for a most enjoyable watch and I thought you got some lovely shots. How did you digitise the photographs Martin, did you use a film scanner of some sort please?
@lensman5762

Some lovely photographs there Martin. I bought one of these cameras last year so that I could use my Canon L lenses with film. The camera is surprisingly a good performer, as my 35mm camera gear is mostly Nikon and Leica. It is surely more plasticky than a Nikon F line but it seems to have lasted well and performs reasonably well. One thing I really don't like about it, to activate the mirror lock up, it has to be in self timer mode., otherwise it is a decent camera and a fraction of the cost of an EOS 3 SLR. Even last year good examples of the EOS 3 could be found around the £130.00 mark, but now they are touching £300.00 which is rather ridiculous IMHO.
@martinhensonphotography

Yea it’s not perfect but fir a few quid remarkable quality, I dint know you could lock up the mirror, thanks

Try these two ways as a start, Acros 100iso 1:100 7:45 20c or Fuji Acros semi-stand 100iso 1 min continues agitation, ONE inversion at 10 mins till end time 15.30 20c

I was also given one of these with a 50mm lens. I like the eye focus system which they stopped in other newer cameras maybe due to costs. I find it has too many things to do on it and I like the simple mode of going out with a range finder like the mamiya six. I just love my mamiya six version V. Just picked an automat up for $40 in a job lot of three cameras but got a refund as one was broken in transit. The automat needs new bellows which I'll get at camera bellows in the UK. The rest is cleaning up nice. Shutter is all back together and working now.
@martinhensonphotography
@martinhensonphotography 2 года назад
Yes all those options just to take a picture lol, I think gear is important, however, it does not make a person a great photographer, just helps on the way as one progresses, the Automat is a Wonderfully simple camera, near perfect in some ways, mine needed new bellows, which it has now and I love to go out with it, it inspires me to take pictures and that’s why gear is important

@@martinhensonphotography so true about the mamiya sixes. I got one in mint condition with hood and filter and case as the dam thing has no strap lugs. It's my go to camera in pocket size 120 rangefinder cameras. I ended up with 6 others which I'm restoring and will fit new bellows and sell on. I managed to get the really old version with the waist level finder in which I need to clean up. I'm lucky in finding a Japan seller that sources them for me with gummed up shutters. Only problem I have is the copal-mx shutter which is fine at all speeds except 5th and 10th which act like 100th sec. I tried adjustment but it still won't work. Back in the day they would just put a new escapement in but we don't have that luxury today. I'm amazed they keep working which is more than can be said for modern digital which are landfill in a year. I was given a canon 5 d mark 1 in Canada a few years back. It was $5000 when new. It would not turn on. I sent it to canon for repair. It came back with a message that they only hold the parts for 5 years and they can not repair it. It was only just over 5 years old. I still use the two versions of the canon f1 and they work beautifully.

@@petercooper9054 I think we have not to turn our backs on technology, without it our films cameras would still be archaic in construction and technical ability, not just the bodies also the glass, however, the problem today day is technology as moved to a level and taken so much away from the photographer and the art of making picture's, I do embrace it but to a point were it becomes intrusive and starts to think for me rather than the other way around, that's why I love the old cameras, makes you work to get the picture
@petercooper9054
@petercooper9054 2 года назад
@@martinhensonphotography so true what you say. Getting back to basics is good. Most people I talk to who are interested in photography have no idea about speeds and apertures and the relationship they have. I finally bit the bullet today and moved up to 5x7 format with a Beautiful linhof technika complete with two lenses wide angle adapter and reducing back to 4x5 and dark slides. Now this camera is going to slow me down in every way! One day I'll get time to start a channel on RU-vid.

If I use my Nikon scanner its at 4000dpi, the Epson v850 at 3500dpi
