My Version of a 40 Team NHL

It was an idea I had... literally before I had an internet connection. As someone mentioned it in a comment, I figured I could revisit it and explain how I worked out the schedule. Yes, it would mean adding nine teams and, no, I don;t believe it happens during my lifetime.

Holy. 1 and 31 chance of saying the blues. 1 and 3 chance of saying it was because of a goalie. So 1 in 93 chance of him predicting this. Or a 1.01% Chance. Also I subbed to you

I used to do this. I wrote a whole story about how i got scouted in Highschool on some rec team and got to play for USA and the World Juniors. And i eventually went into the NHL Entry Draft and went somewhere in the 4th round by San Jose. And i went through my 25 season career with stats, trophies, playoff appearances, when i got traded. I went through that whole story all in memory, out of the blue. And watching this video was very satisfying because people called me crazy when i was alone at a lunch table, writing about a story that would never happen in a million years. But now i know there's other hockey fanatics out there that do things like that. This is awesome

This is basically what I did in previous NHL games. I'd go through every team and make a player or two where they were struggling and help each team contend for a playoff spot. I had mostly a different team win the cup every year and no team had more than 100 points. A lot of really good teams missed the playoffs by maybe a few points then they would make it the next year.

The four best fourth placed teams will play eachother in a single game playoff where the best fourth placed team hosts the fourth best fourth placed team and the second best fourth best team hosts the third best fourth placed team. Then, the 32 teams remaining go into the playoffs. In the two conferences where the fourth placed team made it through to the playoffs the team that won that conference would play the team who finished fourth in their conference while the team that came second would play the team that came third in that conference. In the other conferences, the team that came first would play the team that came third while the eight teams who came second in their conference will play a nearby team, the combined travel time for those four games should be as low as possible between the eight teams. The round of 32s fixtures are best of five, with the first two games being held one of the teams stadiums and the other 1-3 being held at the other teams stadium. After the round of 32 has finished and there are 16 teams left the round of 16 starts, in the two conferences where the fourth placed team advanced to the round of 32 the two teams who won will play eachother, in the four other conferences where there are still two teams, those two teams will play eachother, the other four teams will be put into a group and will play the other teams twice each, totaling six games. The other games are best of seven, With the fixtures between Team A and Team B being Team A is at home for the 1st,2nd and 5th game while Team B is at home for the 3rd,4th,6th and 7th game. Then is the quarter final, there will be 8 teams from 8 different conferences, every team will play the team from their rival conference, there will either be no teams or 2 teams who don't have a team from their rival conference remaining, if there are 2 teams remaining who don't have a team to play in their rival conference, they will play eachother. The quarter final fixtures are best of 5, they use the same format as the round of 32 "the first two games being held one of the teams stadiums and the other 1-3 being held at the other teams stadium." In the semi finals there is a draw to determine the fixtures, then there will be two games, both best of 5 using the same format as the round of 32 and the quarter final. The Stanley cup final is held across three matches, the first match is held at the stadium of the team who got more points in the league than the other team, then the second game will be held at the other teams stadium, overtime will not be played in these games. Then, a third and final game will be played between the teams at a neutral stadium, if the game ends and the score from the 3 games combined is level, then it will go to 3 on 3 overtime, if 5 minutes have played and there neither team have scored, they will play another 5 minute period, if it's level after that, it's a shootout. Trophies Stanley Cup (Winner of the Playoffs) Prince of Wales Trophy (Finalist of the playoffs)* Presidents Trophy (Most points in Regular Season) Clarence S. Campbell Bowl (Finalist of the Playoffs)* Preseason Trophy (Winner of the Preseason tournament) * = The team with the better league record decides on which trophy they get before the final, the other team, will get the trophy that the team with the better league record did not pick. Preseason Trophy The Preseason Trophy is made up of 16 teams: - The top three teams from the finalists conferences (6 teams) - The top two teams from the semi finalists conferences (4 teams) - The top team from the other 6 conferences (6 teams) In the round of 16, there will be a draw to determine the fixtures and to determine who plays the game at home and who plays it away. This game is a one off game. The quarter finals, semi finals and final use the same format as the round of 16, "there will be a draw to determine the fixtures and to determine who plays the game at home and who plays it away. This game is a one of game." The teams who have been knocked out or did not qualify for the Preseason Trophy will play other teams who have been knocked out or did not qualify for the Preseason Trophy in friendlies.

This is so awesome and fun to think about. I wrote down on paper everything that you had on your board in the same order/alignment and realized that east/west conferences wouldn’t work so we would need to go with something more like the old Wales vs Campbell conference names for Stanley Cup playoffs seeding. I love your content so much!!! Thank you so much

I used to do this too when I was a kid. But I only had a 10 team league cuz I Didnt want to make up/keep track of that many players or teams. I would actually play the games tho. When I was really young, I would use my closet as a net, and shoot a rolled up sock at myself with one of those little plastic hockey sticks and try to stop it with my body or a baseball glove. I remember one year for Christmas I got a CD player/stereo for Christmas, so whenever a goal was scored i would run over and turn it on and let music play for 10 seconds like a goal horn/song. As I got older I realized it was too predictable, and I was showing favoritism and letting in goals for certain players/teams. So I started playing in my driveway. I had a really challenging system for "clearing the puck out of the defensive zone" and "entering the offensive zone", and then I had an overly large "crease" that i couldn't shoot inside of. And the only way to score was to hit the back upper post in the net. Yeah, I had a sad/lonely childhood lol. But great video. Brought back so many memories.

I made something similar to this but in my hockey league, games were decided by the roll of the dice. I did it all throughout middle school and some of high school and people would see me sitting alone working away at this and wonder why I wanted to work for my free time. I couldn't answer that question but it was just what I loved to do. Loved this video 👍👍

2 conferences of 500 teams, 5 divisions per conference of 100 teams each, 4 sectors for each division of 25 teams, and then 5 segments in each sector each made of 5 teams. All the divisions, segments, and sectors only matter for a regular season schedule, which is 100 games. The ideal postseason would just be the top 16 teams overall make it and the 16 seed plays the 1, the 15 plays the 2, and so on. You would have to expand overseas because 1000 teams is insane. What we have created here is a worldwide organization of hockey, or WOH. Also thanks for planting this idea in my head I'm gonna make a whole thing now

Andre48 rather than a team in Virginia I would rather have a team in Cleveland they could easily support one, now with a renovated arena, I could see it. If San Jose can have an nhl and an AHL team, Cleveland could have a nhl team and move the monsters to Cincinnati or Louisville, or if you want, Virginia beach.
@rdzandre8005
@rdzandre8005 7 лет назад
MrSportsCards72 I put a team in VB because they are building a new arena and the developers are pursuing a NBA or NHL team. Plus, I've always felt that Columbus represented the State of Ohio because it's in the middle of the state. For some reason I've felt like having two teams in Ohio for any sport that wasn't Cleveland v. Cincinnati feels weird whether it's Columbus v. Cleveland or Columbus v. Cincinnati

This is fucking badass. I love that you are so uncontrollably obsessed. I'm 15 and I have spent so much of my life being the same way, with stats, history, rivalries and I'd go on for years through this simulation just like you do, except I do it in American Basketball and I used to do it in American Football to an extreme. I am willing to get into this hockey purely because of this, it proves to me that there is somebody else that is like me. I completely agree by the way on your view of expanding the playoffs. I completely agree. I'm also a big international soccer fan and they are expanding the World Cup in 2026 from 32 teams to 64. It ruines the purity, it makes qualifying for the world cup mean nothing. You're Canada has only qualified for the world cup once, but now they probably will every other world cup.

As much as I like the idea of the 40 team league, I think the NHL will want to keep the time zones the same the best they can. For example, Winnipeg is two time zones apart from Vancouver, and Hamilton three zones apart. I think the league would work under the following alignment: Eastern Conference NE: Boston, Hartford, Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax Great Lakes: Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo, Cleveland, Hamilton Atlantic: NY Islanders, NY Rangers, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh SE: Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Washington, Columbus Western Conference: Central: Winnipeg, Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis Midwest: Dallas, Houston, Colorado, Kansas City, Nashville NW: Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland SW: Arizona, Vegas, LA, Anaheim, San Jose Overall, I like the exercise you offer on the 40 team NHL

Silly Llama 69 the old ECHL New Orleans brass say otherwise. The ONLY reason they left was because of the NBA team kicking them out of the arena they both shared. The attendance figures were great for AA level hockey

Hey shannon, this was the video that got me into your channel a couple years ago. I used to do leagues like this back when i was a kid but with only 8-12 teams and less than 10 players on each. I thought i was crazy but it was cool to see someone else who did the same. I've been a fan ever since and I watch a lot of your videos daily. I'm starting up my own 48 team league this week with full custom rosters and schedule, and i'd love it if you could revisit this topic just explaining a bit more about it, id be super interested. Mad respect to you

Please make another video on how you did it and more players from your league. Did you have players that dominated the league? Did you have a league with a Golden State and Cleveland feel to it where there were regular faces in the finals? and how did you format it all?

I can see a 36 team league. It would just build on what the divisions they have. The Pacific adds Seattle, Central gets Milwaukee and Houston, Metro gets either Atlanta or Hartford, and the Atlantic gets Quebec City. There could be relocation to add places like Portland or Hamilton but I just don't see relocation happening right now.

In a hypothetical 40 team league I'd like to see a different playoff structure. 2 conferences and 8 divisions. The 1st team from every division gets a bye. 4 in each conference. The next beast 8 teams from each conference get a spot. 12 teams from each conference and 24 teams overall make the playoffs. Make the bye week and conference quarterfinals best of 5s and conference semis, finals, and the SC best of 7s. To compensate for the few extra games played a few games can be cut from the regular season.

It would be awesome if you could do your 40 league NHL and show us it's progression starting with the next season going onward. I'd be interested to see how you'd see some players progress, who would win Cups and what players you'd create. It would be fun to even include some of your viewers as ''players'' too!

Halifax has a pop of 400,000 if you include surrounding areas and not many big businesses so not really an ideal city for an NHL team.

I live in Halifax, and a team here wouldn't work. We are too small compared to the other hockey markets. And our arena (ScotiaBank Centre) holds about 14 000. Other NHL arenas hold about 17 000 to 20 000. I think a lot of Halagonians would like an NHL team, but know it wouldn't work. We love our Mooseheads, and I think we are okay to stick with a QMHJL team. An NHL team is not the greatest idea for us, at least not right now.

Add: Houston, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Hampton Roads, Saskatchewan, Toronto 2, Kansas City, Portland to get to 40. Boise, Halifax, Quebec, Cleveland could work. Weirdly, Burlington and North Dakota have more hockey fans per capita than larger US cities.

What if in later years the NHL did expand that much or even more? I think an interesting idea would be if they adopted a variation of the Premier League system, where the worst team of each division every year drops to the next best league, and the winner of the division moves up to the best league. That way if they expand to say, 60 teams, then they could still maintain the current schedule to an extent. The best league would still be the NHL and the next best league would be called the WHA maybe. That would increase the level of competition in both leagues because the teams are closer to each other's level. Also, there wouldn't be any more rebuilding teams in the NHL. You can avoid watching bad teams if you want to.
@kadoodle6841
@kadoodle6841 7 лет назад
Bmac4460 well the NHL could do that with the AHL but I think that the audience would determine on who would up and down and it would be a huge hassle.
