Excellent video. I'm shopping for a pedal-drive kayak, and your video is the best that I've seen so far in terms of pros and cons, and customization. Thanks.

I met and talked with Woody from Native several times. Hes a nice guy. I did this video as one of the first non promotional videos about the Titan. I have had a lot of people tell my they purchased a Titan based on my video. Which is a cool thing. I wanted to make sure I gave it a 100% real review with no manufacturer bias. And I have seen that Native has made some changes. I don't know if they were from my suggestions or not, but they did address some of the important issues. Its by far the best big guy kayak on the market.

Wades World a 3 month review would be great. I've had mine out twice. Pedaled once. Trolling motor once. So far the pros outweigh the cons. Would love to know what you think about it after using it for 3 months.

Hey! We currently have a 2015 hobie PA 14 and I was thinking about upgrading to a titan. I didn’t like how the hobie handled in rough water... felt tippy to me. I am a big guy 350 and looking for a wider yak. What say you on the comparison?

EXCELLENT review!!!!! I have the same pros and cons you have. I was relieved that you think the same about the Propel drive making that slurping noise on the water. I know my order was held up due to them supposedly addressing a drive issue with it not reaching the water. However mine still slurps and at time feels like I'm not making progress...But once I'm going it is smooth. Making it longer would suck if you fish skinny water or have grass in your waters in the summer like I do. My major issue is with ACK. My first Titan came to me so damaged I had to send it back after waiting over a month to get it. The second one came with a dent in the nose, but not catastrophic like the first one. I asked to be compensated with a gift card or a landing gear and neither request was acknowledged!!!!! I love the Titan but it is a royal pain in the ass to get in and out of the water without the proper landing gear! Once again perfect review!!!!
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
I agree. Its a design flaw. Maybe they need to design the area in front of the drive on the hull to funnel more water to the prop. Hard to believe that they let it go out like that. Its still functional, but more of a nuisance. I agree on the shallow water drawback. The Hobie wins that area hand down.

I got the kayak all geared up for the trolling motor. I dropped in some quick release mounts for the power on the back and the cockpit area of the yak. I put in 8 Gauge power wire and a 60amp fuse. Im hoping to take it out for a test run in the next week. Ill video the trip and give you guys some thoughts. I got the 36" Minkota 55# trolling motor. It barely fits through the pedal drive, but it works.

Thanks for the show Wade. I was thinking about the Titan because of the space and SOT version that drains the boat and makes it unsinkable unlike my Ultimate FX. But noise and a cavitating prop is a nogo to me. So thanks for your great insight view ... just what I was looking for because I wasn‘t shure about the lengh of pedal drive in the first place when I saw it. But quiet movement is of utmost importance to me as I‘m trolling after very shy fish in shallow waters. So I stick with my Ultimate wich really is a stealth mode hunter. 👍🏼

@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
Right on man. I think you will like your Titan the more you use it. You will find that you just start pedaling slower and pick up the pace once your moving. Then the slurping is much less. The seat issue is just POOR quality control. Im trying to figure out a way to stop the noise. That should be a video in itself. Im going to shoot a separate video just on the landing gear issue you and I both have. I didnt use the plastic threaded slugs in mine. I bought square nuts that fit the track like a glove. The plastic ones will strip out. I put the 2 power poles on mine. Your right about the cost though. Way to high a price to anchoring. But when you use it..Its so much nicer than using a regular anchor. Im into mine for over $5k now with all the extra. The stability and maneuvering of this kayak make it my favorite.. even with all its issues. Ig you havent added a back hatch.. I highly reccommend it. Wade

I dont have a link.. I bought it at ACK.. Its just a 5" hatch that has a bag inside it. Just something they had on the shelf. Its definitley a must add if you want to do anything in the rear of the kayak.

You the man! I really appreciate the detailed response. Tell me more about about the rubber you used to wrap the seat frame. I shot a quick video showing people what cavitation is, but I like the idea of shooting another about the seat fix. Your also correct on the boondox bar. I got mine in today from Boondox. Its 27" And I still have to only insert the legs of the wheels in part of the way or I am dragging wheels on the hull. There is entirely too much play in the wheel placement on the legs. They slide in and out at least 2 inches. I am considering drilling a new hole for the wheel pin, so the wheel stays in the wide position..away from the hull. That would help a lot. Also.. I cant put my seat as far forward as you. Im 6'0 and FAT! So I paddle more extended and laid back. For that reason, my wheel placement leaves a LOT of weight to the front of the boat to carry. Which is really tough if your using a steep incline boat ramp. Im considering using an adjustable set of wheel to put in the front scupper to offset the weight and save my hands and back a lot of strain. Again.. great job on the detailed info. Wade

On point with everything. I own a 2015 propel 13 and a 2017 camo edition 12ft hobie and from my perspective the propel system is the way to go for bass fishing. The seat and drive on the native is lousy but it’ll be a quick fix for native in the years to come. The boonedox is a must on all propel drives btw.

Omg finally someone that had a hobie! Every thing you said negative is a big issue and very well known! It is a cool boat I hope they listen to everything you said! And the water leak from the rudder sucks. I am a hobie guy and there is no video on how shallow you can go without messing up the prop. Hobbies can go in crazy low water and still go with half pumps. If native fixes the few things I would buy the next one;) thanks for the honesty there are a lot of native Homer’s out there;)

I spoke with Woody about some of the issues and they have been remedied already. The water leak from the rudder has been fixed with a foam insert. 5 min fix. The cavitation was kinda fixed with a new prop.. But its less efficient than the original. I fixed my issue by adding a closed cell foam block under the cover that extends to the water line. Problem solved. The noisy seat can be fixed with some wrap on the bars then reinstalling the seat cover. (I added a pnuematic seat that raises and swivels. (FFFF"ing awesome), The transom still needs an access hatch though. Only other real drawback is the weight. Loaded with batteries.. I guarantee its pushing 220#. Its insane hard to even roll with the boondox. But....... I still love it on the water.. Its fat and slow.. like me.. But its nimble and has the instant reverse.. Huge plus on the water. And is by far the most stable kayak on the market.

@michaelkelilocke9742
@michaelkelilocke9742 7 лет назад
Wade, I have a Titan and have run into most of what you talked about (except Power poles). I did make the Boonedox Hobie pole work but just barely. I run on a lake so I only notice cavitation when hitting reverse. Was glad to see how you hooked up fish finder I have a ray marine DV4 still in box. My 2 issues are I keep getting fishing line caught between the black cover of horizontal rod storage and hull. I'm fishing 4-6 lb line for crappie. Also wish there were indexing pins to go into tracks on rear of seat. The seat keeps rotating on me unless the knows are really tight on the seat. Adjusting in the water is kinda tough. I also fish with a dog and the hull of the kayak gets so hot she can't stand in the back. I keep watering down the surface for her but I'm going to have to get some pads that don't absorb so much heat..
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
Look for a piece of light colored astroturf for your dog in the back. I find it gives the dog better traction and is a lot cooler. Ive made a couple changes to my Fish finder cables that are a lot cleaner install. Im shooting an update video soon and will address the seat noise issue and the seat swivel you referenced. Ill put some thought into a fix for the seat swivel issue. Thanks for watching the video.

Does the cup holder take on a lot of water ? Does that water go into the hull. If so, you might do an experiment . Attach a bag to the bottom of the cup holder the next time you head out, and see how much water you bag.Addressing the drive system. To make ait run deeper, you could Mount it on a rud with a drop down u shape. Looks like you can drop at least 2 inches like that.Seat noise ? Wax the bar.Maybe a felt sleeve on the frame.Enjoyed the video, thank you for sharing.

Hi Wade. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I found your video because I am considering this exact boat. My question is this, if you were to purchase the exact same seat system, could an adult ride behind you? I will be using the boat for two purposes... Fishing and cruising with my wife. I am trying to avoid the expense and sheer length of the Hobie PA17t. Time would be about split between the two purposes, but if another seat assembly would secure back there and even if she had to put her feet alongside the front chair, this may be a great hybrid solution. I would appreciate your thoughts. Maybe slide your seat all the way back and see what you think. Or any other viewers? Thanks in advance. Shane

I picked up the trailer from either Harbor Freight or Northern tool. I originally for it for my first Hobie, it turned out to be a really nice trailer for the Titan. I have since moved from the Titan to the 360 Sky kayak and it has a custom trailer for it. Unfortunately, this trailer is sitting my my back yard wasting away. :( But it only cost $400-$600 when I bought it. Just add some 3" PVC tubes so the kayak sits well and keeps the kayak from warping.

What's up Wade...aka King County Yaker(grimes) lol I got some questions about that shirt but we will get to that later on the water one day. Okay so first of all Good Job on the quick review, I noticed your seat looks just like mine and isn't really (evenly) sewed on right which makes me think they just threw these together as quick as possible because of the high demand....I paid cash and waited almost two months for this rig and the seat was still a few days late to ACK but they at least gave me a hobie loaner to keep me on the water which almost caused buyers remorse on the Titan but I hung in there and now have been dealing with some of the same issues as you. I'm working on this foam overlay piece that fills the air gap between the indexer and the cover to see if it eliminates the noise, I'll let you know if it works. Sorry for the long comment but this is life brotha. I fish around Houston a lot and will be taking a trip to coleto creek soon if you wanna go.

Yeah I am buying mine right now and wondering if I am gonna have to pick up a yakattack switchblade. What was the deal with the power poles? I thought they just direct mounted onto the two plates in the back? Dont know about cutting a hole in the thing
@wadegrimes5901
@wadegrimes5901 5 лет назад
@@brianthomas944 With the power poles, there is no way to put a nut and bolt on ..and attach the plate back on the kayak flat It would literally be raised by the thickness of the nut and bolt sticking out. You could drill holes to match the bolt positions. I chose to use the hull of the kayak and the plate to strengthen the mount. To me, its a lot of stress on the 4 corner screw holding that plate on when they poles are driving into the ground.. The rear hatch was mainly for convenience to do the work though the hull and be able to add and remove my batteries in the back. Its crazy that Native did not add it there in the first place. The yak attack switch blade is probably the way to go with the side scan transducers. I will probably go that way myself.

Nice video, Wade! Regarding that noise on your seat, I don't think ti's from the fabric on metal. My Slayer has the same seat and it's silent. perhaps it's something where the seat mounts? Thanks Marvin. If you look up close on my video, the strap connects to the material on the seat on the outside edge of the bar. I am thinking that its the material on the bar twisting as its pushed backwards. Its just a guess, but its all I can come up with. The sound definitely comes from the upper portion of the seat. I will shoot some close up video and see if we can pinpoint this sound. Its really terrible.

@fatchancesoutdooradventure2305
I realize I'm about a year late on commenting here, (researching this yak for potential purchase). For the seat noise issue, what if you were to spray silicone into the fabric? Do you think that would aleviate to issue?
@WadesWorldVideo

I tried different lubricants, but nothing worked. I ended up putting in a 360 rotating pedestal seat and not using the Native seat. There are fixes now that eliminate the noise. You just have to remove the fabric. Wrap the bar with a tape. Put fabric back on. Google it. Its not too bad.

Wade , thanks for sharing. Could you mount a minkota trolling motor on the back if wanted ?
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
I am sure there is a way to mount one on. But for now, I dont know if they make a special transom mount. The actual transom is likely too deep to use a regular transom style screwing mount. I added a 55# Minkota to mine by adding the Native trolling motor mount to the Pedal drive area. It just drops through the hole and lock into place. Then a regular transom mount just locks on to it. You do have to be careful when taking off. It put a LOT of stress on the plastic locking mounts. They flex something terrible with a 55# thrust. I'm sure they will break on me one day, So I am going to put a couple in my new rear hatch storage. I will discuss this in more detail on the 3 month review I'm am about to shoot.

I know this was 4 years ago. But I just bought mine I love it. I have the seat problem. Do you have a different video for the hole you put in the back? And I have the same wheel setup but cause of the weight and have to unload and load sometimes at a distance I am using a second wheel cart temporarily and looking to install a second landing gear setup soon.

Congrats on picking up the Titan. It's a kayak that I really loved. It checked all the boxes for me. The weight of the kayak was my only real problem. The other stuff was fixed with minor adjustments. The Boondox landing gear was an absolute must. I even used a small hobie cart on the front. There was just so much tongue weight, it made pulling it a nightmare. In reality, the Titan should be loaded and unloaded like a bass boat. I know its still a kayak, but the weight is just to much to overcome. I ended up selling mine to a friend that needed the larger kayak. I was having some wrist issues that prevented me from pulling the monster up and down boat launches. The hole in the back was also pretty necessary. I couldn't believe that Native didn't put any access in that transom from the factory. It was really a pretty easy install. I picked up a round hatch from ACK. I then traced the mounting ring opening onto the kayak and cut out the hole. Then just installed the hatch with 4 screws. Took about 15 minutes. I wish I still had the footage of the install.. Im sure its been wiped over several times now. Unfortunately I haven't shot any video in a couple years now. I got super lazy editing my footage. I recently picked up a new Kayak (Bluesky 360). So I have thought about making some videos again. Thanks for watching man.

Nice Review, how do you like the Titan compared to the Hobie PA 14. It would be cool to see a video between the two.
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
I love both kayaks. My decision to buy the Titan was made up of several factors.. The 2 big ones being Stability and the other being Maneuvering. The Titan out performs the Hobie on both of those. I like the Hobie pedal drive better. I like the motion range on the Hobie better than the bike pedaling motion of the Native pedal. The Hobie also lets me feather the pedal to move in very shallow water. I cant do that in the Titan. But that wasnt a big enough bonus to get me to take the Hobie over the Native. Plus.. I can reverse pedal instantly without dropping my fishing rod. I have an older PA14. I still love it. It just got long in the tooth and I wanted that super stable and nimble Titan. Im sure I will still use it from time to time..but I am really liking the Titan for my primary fishing kayak.

I just stumbled upon your channel. You have both boats that I'm looking at buying and I'm leaning towards the Pro Angler 14 because of the Mirage Drive. I'm close to your size and was wondering how stable is the Hobie compared to your Native? Awesome Video!
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 4 года назад
You cant go wrong either way. The hobies drive is superior. The Titan has far better stability and steering. The Titan though is very heavy. Not as easy to transport and slower in the water. I love it.. dont get me wrong. But just trying to roll it to a ramp or get it on a trailer really sucks. Especially if you add batteries, fish finder etc. But on the water is very agile. You can easily stand and fish or just stretch your legs. The Hobie is fast though. Works better in shallow water. And the new 360 drive is a game changer. Again. You cant go wrong either way, but the new hobie is bad ass if you have the $$.

This wheel system is almost mandatory on a yak this big. Flipping it over to add wheels in the scupper holes isnt easy. These pull out with the twist of a set screw and pivot down and lock into place. Check out this video by my buddy Tony. It shows you more info on the system. They run $249. If its going on a Titan. It is much MUCH easier to install with the track system, but you will need an extended bar. Needs to be 27-30" in length. You can even cut a metal tube and use it if you dont want to drop 20-30$ more for the pre made bar. Here is his video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AqLWezWUwHE.html

Wades World, I currently have my Native Titan @ ACK as I type this. Are you having any issues with the rear hatch leaking in water? They replaced it with a Hobie PA hatch to keep the water out and also the rear drain plug had to be replaced because the factory drain plug would not go back in as it should. The drain plug is a male end with threads but on the kayak end there is no female threading. I also have a lot of wobble coming from the rudder handle. Have you had any of these issues?
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
1. I havent noticed any issue with my rear hatch. Mine seems to seal ok, but I havent had a lot of water in the back to really find out if its leaking or not. 2. I havent really messed with my drain plug either. I will pull it out tonight and check it out. I havent seen any water in the hull, so i dont think its leaking.. but I want to be sure. 3. The rudder handle I have had some experience with. My cables actually slipped out of the track. I tightened mine up as the cables slipped while I was out on the water. I ended up putting a barrel style crimp on the end of my cable beneath the rudder control. I cant see it loosening up and moving again. I should make a quick video on that if its happened to other people too. Are you using the factory rudder or the metal Boondox rudder?
@epix8012
@epix8012 7 лет назад
Wades World, I'M using the factory rudder. When you make that additional video you should mention to those watching to be careful not to over tighten the stainless screw that comes with the rudder because it will make it very hard to move the rudder. My rear hatch would not sit flush and I was told when I picked it up about two weeks ago that there was some possible issues with the rear hatch taking on water. Sure enough when I went out to Moses Lake this past weekend I had water in the hull. I also saw your other video with the damage on the bottom and mine was the same as well. For the amount of money we have spent, I have to say that I'M not happy with Native. ACK should not be making the fixes, Native should!
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
You ever get your Titanback from ACK? I did a follow up video for the Cavitation.. The new prop Native has put out fixed the problem.
@epix8012
@epix8012 7 лет назад
Wades World yes I got it back last week. The hatch was replaced with a Hobie hatch, the rudder works like it should now and I'm waiting to here from ACK when they will receive the replacement prop's from Native. Hey have you noticed your Boondox landing gear wheels getting a flat spot when left down for an extended period of time because of the weight of the Titan?
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
I have seen the flat spot. It finally went round again after use.. So now I don't leave the landing gear down any longer. I'm considering using anther 2 wheel scupper dolly near the middle of the kayak to take a lot of the weight off when i'm pulling it. In my opinion.. the Boonedox gear is too short for the taller Titan. The bar needs to be wider than the 27" they suggest.

@alanmacias6212
@alanmacias6212 7 лет назад
Wades World I wonder if Native will put out a 2018 model that fixes the issues you highlight here. The lack of a rear hatch is very disappointing also. You shouldn't have to drill into a $3300 brand new yak! Thanks again for the detailed walkthrough and review.
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
You are correct Alan. I think I know why Native didnt add the hatch to the transom. Many people wont rig these boat out as much as we do. It would have been an easy add on from the factory.. But im sure they rushed this to market a little fast. That hatch I added was an awesome upgrade for me. I wish it was an inch larger, but if it was...it wouldnt fit edge to edge on the top of the transom. Maybe a small square hatch or rectangle would give us a lot more room to do what we need to do.
@alanmacias6212
@alanmacias6212 7 лет назад
You prefer this to the Hobie PA ? I'm [trying to] deciding between the two.
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
I guess it depends on the type of fishing you like. The stability and maneuverability of the Titan are a run away winner over the PA. The PA pedal drive is much better in shallow water. The Titan has super easy reverse. The PA you have to use pull cable that tend to brake (serious flaw). So I guess it depends on what is more important to you. I have both.. I use my Titan everytime now. Take that for what its worth.
@epix8012
@epix8012 7 лет назад
did you have an issue with the wheels hitting the sides of the kayak? I'm currently mounting mine and trying to find the best spot, which seems to be right behind the seat.
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
Eric Delgado I actually did have that same problem. make sure you have the Boondocks mounts as far wide as they'll go. then when you put the wheels in don't push them in all the way. they will tighten up and work fine if they're only in about an inch and a half. I played around with it tonight and kind of found the perfect place for the wheels. I pushed the mount as far forward to the rear of the seat as possible. so the kayak wasn't as heavy on the nose to lift.

GusTorres21 Thats a tough call. There are things i like about both. So it comes down to whats more important to you. Stability and maneuvering are Titan by a lot. @GusTorres21
@GusTorres21 7 лет назад
Wades World, when you use the micro system, do you always use both & how does it do in rough waters when anchored down?
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
You can use both or 1 at a time. If the wind is blowing and I really want to anchor solid.. I use both. Keeps me from spinning with the wind. When it rough.. My balance seems to be thrown off when anchored if I am standing. Hard to explain..but it tougher to stand in rough waves anchored than not anchored. It may just take some getting used to. Sitting..you tend to get more water coming over the sides than you get otherwise. It definitely has its limits. I just checked out that Wilderness Radar. Good looking rig. It looks like they put some good R&D into the design. I would love to get my hands on that Yak to give it a good review.

How do you put a 3 blade prop through a vertical opening? The blades have to be at 12 and 6 just to lift the drive out of the water. The caviration comes from the blade pitch and not being deep enough in the water. I would love a 3 blade prop.. but it wont be able to comes through the hull.

You coulda just unscrewed the mounting plates put the power poles on the mounting plates off the yak then put the mounting plates back on? Those plates are screwed on for a reason. No need to put a massive hole in the boat.
@WadesWorldVideo
@WadesWorldVideo 7 лет назад
It's pretty clear you don't have power poles mounted on a Titan. The plates sit flush on the transom. There is no recess for the bolt or the nut . If you were to put a 6+" screw and a nut on the plate, how is it that you think you're going to put the plate down on the transom flush? Even if you cut the bolts off to be even with the nuts.. the plate would be sticking up at least a half an inch. So simply saying that you can just attach a power pole to a plate doesn't make any sense. If there were a recess, then of course I would just mount it on the plate and mount the plate to the transom. But native did not make it that way. Plus.. now i have access to put in batteries and mount my 360 light. The 8" hatch in the back is absolutely worthless for access.
