@@christiandecastro3360 byanymeansbasketball has a nice video about lebron and goes a bit into his movement patterns on court, doesnt cover everything but still interresting
I purchased Tim Grover's Jump Attack book and worked through the routines. The excercises are the same that MJ and Kobe did with Grover. The footage here shows upperbody excercises, but the book is very heavy on the lower body.
Grover later became Kobe's trainer and I definitely have seen footage of Kobe training the lower body. It is hard to believe any qualified trainer would tell Jordan, "Hey it's all good Mike, upper body is all you need bro".
@mikelee1655 I mean it was the 90s so it's not that unthinkable to believe that just with running and basketball it was enough work for the lower body.
These guys have a pretty good walkthrough of part of the program. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6aHW7tV4tu0.html@@panchopanterachokomilk7522
I'm really enjoying these reaction videos! Most of the "professional X reacts" type are from people who aren't the best in their respective fields, so seeing these from someone who IS is rather refreshing
@@otfaj6962 he’s skinny but there’s reports of him deadlifting at minimum 405 with ease and being as strong as or stronger than andrew bogut and mareisse speights. his core stability and strength as well as his lower body strength have to be elite to take contact and also contort his body in the air the way he can, let alone consistently shoot 30+ footers and not tax his legs to an overwhelming degree. gimme a break
The goal training high dollar players is, keep them on the court. If you do some stupid stuff in the gym to improve their performance and hurt them, start looking for another job. These guys are here because they can play the game, jump and run already. They wouldn’t be in the league otherwise. Keep them healthy with orthopedically sound training.
You should get tim grover on your podcast, that would be legendary. Old school vs new school Also chris barnard, form overtimeathletes, also a great coach, havent seen him in a longer conversion on youtube
Bro there's so much footage of Dame working out on his trainers IG (cemconditioning) and his as well. But it looks so weird, like stuff we've never seen before. There's stuff he's doing with bands, wobbly sticks and cables and what not. Could you explain what he could possibly be doing and what purpose it might serve. Because it definitely seems to work 😂
I trained with Joe Hanson, a strength coach mentored by Al Vermeil and was told that MJ could split snatch 275lb. Which would assume that he did Olympic movements as training for his lower body
@@aurelie5445 i don't think that was real... I'm talking about his General workouts.. They're always so crafty and he also trained with micah for sometime those workouts were insane too
the one thing about his trainer that was like 🤯🤯 is that he counted his steps, basically just recorded his motion on the court in order to keep track of possible injuries and im sure other reasons but man this whole program is just next level fs
That’s what every trainer should aspire to do. Unless it’s off of an uneven landing(for example you land on someone’s foot) most injuries come from overuse and bad habits. Like Drose never did a hop step on that side in his nba career and the 1 time he did he tore his knee apart.
@@bigsmall2842 if only this documentary came out sooner. i wouldnt doubt some trainers saw this particular scene in the last dance and it just clicked within them to start doing this for their clients. drose was differenttttt 😭😭😭
Muggsy Bogues was a good example. Was just watching a video with his former teammates talking about how taller and bigger players couldn't just have their way with him on the court because even though he was very short, he was very strong. His background in wrestling also helped.
Dwight Howard has some old workout videos that would be interesting to react to cause of how much slimmer he looks to have gotten over the years but still how he's maintained his athleticism into his older age
He's reduced a little muscle, weight and bulk in order to last longer and maintain similar levels of athleticism. If you notice, it's not just Dwight that has noticed this, but Lebron has done the same. They've both understood what it takes to get past a certain stage, which is great.
@Honest Fan He OBVIOUSLY doesn't have his 2009-12 athleticism because he's in his mid 30's now and because of the back injury as you mentioned, but that man is clearly still VERY athletic. There was a highlight block of him almost snatching up a block in mid air LITERALLY 3 days back lmfao, there you go: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r5s-i1_FjZI.html , scored 14pts 11rbs and 3 blocks in the next match after this too, stop it lol
@Honest Fan ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wl4vUIVsPHI.html You're telling me in his 17th season it's not impressive that he's still dunking like this? That's absurd. Of course he ain't as bouncy as he used to be but to even still be able to bounce like this without significant injury is something
MJ worked on lower body just as much as upper. He spoke of it in his documentary they should the list of the full workouts. It seems like for lower body he kept it simple and just did the fundamental box jumps, squats etc. Probably just exercises to maintain the athleticism instead of exercises to try to improve it since it was already so incredibly high.
There's a video of Tim Grover explaining how he focused primarily on eccentric lower body exercises for MJ (or maybe it was with Kobe. I know he had bad knees too). I remember Grover mentioning they loaded up a leg press, and did NOT let Kobe/MJ do the concentric, only the eccentric. The trainers would all have to work together to push the leg press back up 😆.
Here's the video. It's actually about what Grover had Kobe do. Very similar to your philosophy. I recommend watching the whole vid but you can start it around 5:50 to hear about the eccentric training they used. I'm sure it was similar to what he had MJ do. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YG6ZU-Azttc.html
@@mrniz461 3 inches is a lot at that stage of one's vertical.. Because as we gain vert and get up to higher 40s gaining even an inch is close to impossible.. Ig you agree with this too
What do you think about Tim Grover saying that all this resistance band work everyone is doing nowadays is actually hurting players instead of helping them?
Great video Paul! It's fun to watch these old footages. Tall people can look goofy lifting weights because of their long limbs but they gotta put the work in if they need the size. Bosu ball won't build muscle 💪
Bosu ball's not to build muscle, it's for muscular balance. Try lifting on a Bosu ball and you will know exactly what's the weak link in that chain of muscles, and which side is stronger. You then keep exercising on the Bosu ball until it's completely steady, which let's you know those imbalances are being corrected.
Who says that weight training reduces athleticism???? Bruce Lee would beg to differ. There’s a stark difference between weight training and weight lifting. Using weights to be more efficient and powerful and using weights to be just stronger.
Yo Paul I think you should make a program called “The Upper Body Code” and it would be a 3 months upper body only program and it gave a bunch of gems on how to train upper body for basketball
I owned Grover's workout book that he published not long after that. It was very fundamental to compound lower body movements. Squats, lunges, jump rope, etc. It would still hold up today imo.
Don't forget the Knicks used to bully him and Scott too. The refs started protecting Mike later though. If you breathed too close to him you would get hit with a foul.
Should do a K.D./Giannis early career workout breakdown. Similar somatotype coming into the league, yet Giannis's transformation seemed more definitive.
5:30 bro talking about “the godfathers of pylomentrcs”?? WE THE GODFATHERS OF HOPS 😆 we got Micheal Jordan/Ja/Vince Carter 😭😭 we would know what workouts to do for the best hops
Hey Paul! Recently I’ve been having some pain on the bottom, outside part of my foot. I’ve noticed other athletes also have similar foot pain and was wondering if you could make a video on your channel explaining this and how to fix it.
Lovely old Cybex machines, still works today :) Great breakdown. Sure a little arm iso make players look more intimidating. Guys like Karl Malone, Alonzo Mourning and even Andre Iguodala had quite big arms, not just big shoulders, which most NBA players seem to have. Steve Hess, former strength and conditioning coach of the Denver Nuggets, commented a few years ago that he thought that players had started using a little bit too much fancy core stuff instead of just plain old school weight lifting - to a point where it didn't help them. His thoughts of a potential ego trap for trainers was, that if they tried to come up with overly creative and fancy looking stuff in order to make themselves look more intelligent, it could backfire. I honestly made that mistake at a personal trainer myself and that's been a valuable lesson. Any, would be cool to react to Dwight Howards workouts form around 2010 with his former trainer, Brian Meyer. They are On Stack's YT page.
This is probably why he didn’t do much lower body and it’s not necessary when you train like this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xb9RFHhIb0o.html
Not to sound like a hater but any decent trainer in the world could of done that with Jordan. He also never really jumped any higher under than he already could
@pjfperformance would you be able to get Tim Grover on the podcast would love to see him on your podcast wold be amazing all the Jordan questions he would be able to answer 🔥
Really?! I rarely ever see safety squat bars in a gym and I've never actually used one until 2019. I have one for my personal home gym, but I almost never see them at commcial gyms. They're quite uncommon in the wild.
Theres a video series called "Attention to Detail" that covers it about as well as you can. It was basically hit mechanics, bad habits, and a lack of treatment.
React to De'Aaron Fox, he got a video or 2 on his channel and official Kings channel showing him working out. He, from what I can see, is the fastest player in the NBA right now and definitely would like to get insight on the how.
I play QB in football (might need to play WR next junior year but senior year I’ll play qb) and I want to be more athletic, but still strong enough to break tackles. I need to get faster and more explosive. Just finished speed code. Should I do vert code? Or will that not help me as much with, say, breaking tackles and everything else in football too? I’ve seen reviews saying the vert code is great for overall quickness and speed to, but can anyone here (or Paul the 🐐) give their input? Thanks!
@@tenthirty82 people think you’re exaggerating but it’s true. Add the new rules with all the advancements in sports science. The focus on nutrition, recovery, athletic equipment
Seriously!! I’ve heard at his house he would have brand new weight equipment and he never used them. I’d love to hear how he got that crazy farmer strength because freak genetics will only get you so far!!!
MJ rarely got injuried Even though Detroit Pistons beat him. In the street the would end up in jail. Wonder How Lebron James would deal with that. Players now move luting Lebron James way. That is not defending!
Yet it was still better for his athletic metrics according to all parties. He did a full body weight sequence in every weight session, or split them between workouts. They never approached it as power lifting, but more as a global decompression set that got every major muscle group going; sort of like a resistance stretching set with body weight mixed in would do. And understand: MJ was a seriously big-boned dude who happened to be in a sport that burns fat alike nothing and loads muscles all day for high-rep, low weight, and high ROM response. If he had ever slowed down and just lifted weights, he'd have been a monster.
I’ve always wondered why Mike only did partial extension on some of his lifts. Like, on barbell bench and lat pulldown he goes full but dumbbell bench and shoulder press he seems to only go partial extension. 🤔
Sorry man had to drop in and just comment on how overrated resistance training is period. I grew up in the industry and ran gyms for two decades. Personal training, running operations and the like. The over analysis on resistance training is hilarious. You either have god given talent or you don’t. Want to put some weight and muscle on? Eat and you could do some body weight exercises honestly. I’ve seen kids come in everyday and kill themselves training and not get to start on their high school team. I’ve also seen kids who had major D1 scholarships that totally fucked off and came into the gym to talk and barely pick up a weight. In my opinion resistance training can help you in the long run by 5-10% at most. The less injuries argument is bogus because if you look at the advent of major resistance training through sports you will see a spike in kids and adults blowing out knees more, shoulders, etc. So my point is focus on your sport specific training first and then make sure you are safe with some resistance training along with proper diet, and rest. That’s it man. I’d actually argue that safe resistance training is more important as you get older as a damn civilian. Lol
If he wanted to get big and strong, then this is not the way to do it. But hey, it was the 90’s. And you can’t dumbbell bench the same weight you put on the bar. About half the weight maybe.
@@alvojnikovic2171 I agree with u but even u gotta admit it comes down to more than that I mean u don’t get 48inch vert of just being really skinny I mean if it is I gotta 60vert
wanna see analysis about mahmoud abdul rauf aka chris jackson. 165 lbs still get that nba level of defense. Hes like kyrie keep fasting for religion reason but still playing nice at big3 around his 50s
Jordan’s lifting made him like marble. You can tell it made him a little more rigid than when he was young, but no players today have his level of strength and conditioning in the playoffs.
@@deez9805 lebron obviously bigger and stronger but no where near the conditioning of MJ. Duncan is strong like a tree and has great conditioning for a big man but not explosive like Jordan. Neither have the muscle tone of MJ, that’s a fact.
@@Peter-tg9zv bro wtf are you talking about? Muscle tone has nothing to do with durability and if you actually think MJ looks more jacked then LeBron idk what to tell you there lmao. Aside from that, bigger players are supposed to break down faster if they are running, jumping, and taking on bumps like MJ was. Duncan and LeBron both played against bigger players, more playoff games (by a lot), and they didn’t have 2.5 seasons of breaks from basketball style activities to preserve their body. If MJ was so jacked and durable, he would’ve looked and moved like he was 28 when he was 38 on the wizards. Man had one meniscus tear, came back and didn’t even have his first step anymore. It’s dudes 33+ breaking hips, tearing ACLs and shit coming back faster. MJ set the blueprint for new age training for basketball athletes but he is nowhere close to the standard. There’s no evidence to support it bc he was still injured. He played through them similarly to Kobe where as guys like Bron, KD, Duncan, Stockton actually did not get injured and don’t have any really bad injuries they have to play through every season.
@@deez9805 RU-vid “Michael Jordan joking with Patrick Ewing” and tell me Lebron was ever that lean after his 19th birthday. Yes Lebron is the biggest freak ever and has never been injured but he also sits TONS of games every year. Jordan and Kobe never did that. Jordan’s muscle tone AKA no body fat allowed him to maintain energy in the finals whereas Lebron always runs out of gas. Lebron got really lean one year for the finals (2018) and he had more energy but it wasn’t enough. No doubt Lebron could lift and get way more jacked than Jordan. He’s got a way bigger frame.
Granted I'm not expecting you to be a bench press expert and yes in theory dumbbells are better like you said but in practice barbell tends to be the one that packs on maybe 2-3x the strength and muscle, so dumbbells need to stay supplementary at all times as it's hard to make good gains with dumbbels, much harder, much much harder it cannot be a main lift if you want to build bench just my experience
Hello sir, how are you? As you probably saw, some NBA players are fasting (for Ramadan) and playing at the same time which is incredible and you got to give them respect. What do you think about NBA players who fast and can that have some side (negative) effects? Can that be really bad for muscles, growth hormone and joints, tendons, or it can help? Don't forget how good was Hakeem during that period.
