Relaxation is good. Stress is bad.
We’ve all internalized this mantra of modern culture.
But I think the whole idea here is wrong for two reasons.
First, it creates an impossible expectation. How can we be relaxed all the time when countries on the other side of the world are bombing each other? How can we be relaxed all the time when we're deluged by constant notifications, breaking news alerts, and distraction?
The answer? I don't think we can.
Second, the idea of living in a perpetual state of relaxation is undesirable. We don't actually want to be chilled out in every life moment. There are, after all, all sorts of moments when we want to bring full intensity to the situation. In these moments, the last thing we want to do is feel relaxed.
So I would propose an alternative. It's what I call "nervous system pliability."
The basic idea is to become more skillful at shifting from high intensity to low intensity rather than getting stuck on either side of this nervous system polarity for too long.
