Nest Hello Review - Is It The Best Video Doorbell?

Just picked one up last week. Had it professionally installed by Nest approved installer. Very impressed with it. Video quality is excellent and the alerts are great. Night vision quality is very good as well. Crisp and clean. Well worth the wait for this and it integrates with the Nest App.

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Motion Alerts and the cooldown period of the Nest Hello. After some testing I can confirm that this is indeed an issue. If you're not familiar with the problems, I'll explain both: Cooldown Problem: You get a motion alert that someone is at that door. Once this happens there is a window of time that is referred to a "cooldown period", which would prevent repeated alerts from motion. I haven't tested the EXACT duration of the cooldown period but I am told that it's around 30 minutes. This means that if there is motion at your door you will get a notification right away but if there is motion again several minutes later, you will not be notified because the camera is in its "cooldown" period. This is definitely an issue if you want to be notified every time there is motion in front of your door and there are several scenarios where this could be a huge issue. I would imagine this should be an easy fix for Nest so hopefully they address it quickly. I can't understand why the cooldown period wouldn't be an adjustable option or at least a much shorter duration. 30 seconds would be sufficient in my opinion. The only saving grace is that the camera records 24/7 so you will have a recording of everything but you just wouldn't be notified right away. Nest if you're listening, please fix this ASAP. Motion Alerts: Some reviewers and users have complained that they don't receive motion notifications immediately when there is motion at their front door. I have tested this and I get notified on my phone within about 10-15 seconds. This is not a huge delay but I hope that it's something Nest will address in a future update.

Thanks for the detailed review. Much better motion detection method compared to the original Ring Doorbell, being able to select the zone on the live picture. Also like the idea of a pre-recorded message, and the face detection notifications

I agree with you, I've had both the Ring Pro and now have the Nest Hello. The coverage and quality of video from the Nest is much better in my opinion. The HDR works very well and I thought the low-light performance was miles ahead of the Ring. But the biggest seller was that motion detection was too slow with the Ring, and because it only records on trigger, it would often miss the motion. I far prefer having 24/7 coverage and $50 per year for 7 days of recording is a good price. Anyway, great review!

Good video! Sound quality is just ok and video is 8 of 10

Just got mine installed.. its pertty nice. It's far better than my buddies Ring. Plus 24/7 recording.. his records when it isnt supposed to and forgets to record whe it should. The Nest is 24/7 but you do pay for the retention.. 100$ a year then 50$ per extra camera a year for 10 day retention. Coming from someoen who had two DVR setups die and multiple camera problems I am hoping this solution is better and being it's on the cloud the data wont ever get corrupted. Data centers are built around redundancy which comes at a cost for Nest and they hand that bill down to us lol. Worth it if you can swing it.. if not there are other brands..

Great review. I'm curious about what type of wifi yours was connected to (5ghz ac vs 2.4ghz n) as well as how long it takes for your video to start streaming.when you click on the notification.

I just purchased the Nest Hello but have not had time to install the system. I am going all in with Google's Ecosystem. I have a Google mini assistance and can use that to talk to at my door when they ring the Nest hello. Also, you can display video on a TV if you have a Chromecast streaming device by telling the mini to do that.

Thanks for your Reviews. Nest hello has potential. However they need to get rid of the kinks. An immediate cooldown period or a way it arms immediately after the first activation. Next slow down the delay and also have more options with nest hello. Dont worry about Skybell they are non existant now. The marketing team gave up and there recording options are awfil. Nest streams 24-7.

Hello, Is this camera ONVIF compatible? I currently have the hikvision kb6003-wip doorbell connect to a NVR. Currently looking for a replacement. The Hikvision doorbell has issues with IR reflection at night.

Is the chime only on your phone? So my kids cant hear if somebody rings the doorbell? Also what do think about the cameras that nest makes?

With my Ring Pro I have a 1-2 second delay between when the button is pressed and when the mechanical chime sounds. is there any delay with the Hello?

not sure why my announce that somebody is at the front door doesnt work anymore... And I use to could see and play the history 5days back and today its cut to 5h :/ Any idea?? Should I remove in and set it up once again?? Or make a factory reset?

Great review - you do need to mention the key difference of delayed notification between the Ring and the Nest Hello. I have a difference of about 20 seconds - not good. Not sure if you experienced the same issue when you compared the two?

Hi, Your recomend Sikoimate Power Adapter but I found OhmKat Video Doorbell Power Supply- Compatible with Nest Hello. Are you sure this type of power works with Nest Hello? Can the Sikoimate works with Nest? I was reading that the chime connector is necessary but I suppose if I'm not going to use chime then it is not. I am right?

30 minute cooldown between notifications with the Nest Hello means that you won't get notified of any motion for 30 minutes after a previous notification. You CANNOT adjust the cooldown and there is NO workaround.

Pay AGAIN for 24/7 video recording? The exorbitant price for a door bell should include all of this!

Nest Hello needs to add some physical wireless door chimes.

However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

I have to Say your Video is very well done and Helpful, but a little misleading, at least for Apple users. The App for Nest Cams is so poor, and only has a 2.5 rating on the Apple App store. I purchased this doorbell after reviewing your video and installed it over the weekend, only to have the worst experience with the App. I have a very well put together home network, with 200 mb download and 50mb upload, but am having so many problems with buffering on the app. I have 4 Arlo cams set, with no issue. I called Nest and they were basically embarrassed, because they are well aware of their rating in the app store.

i got the Nest outdoor camera and the audio/sound/recording flawed issue exists on that one too. I kept that product just because I won't rely using that feature. i would not say the same thing about Nest Hello; Hence, not interested in such a flawed ring doorbell.

Majestechs another reviewer has both ring pro and nest hello side to side. Ring pro notifies him almost instantly where there is motion whereas nest hello took over 8 seconds or so before he got notification on his phone. Anybody else noticed that?

Wait, NO mention of the Skybell HD at all? I'm disappointed. The Skybell may not be as popular or well known as the Ring Pro, but that's no reason to pretend it doesn't exist. It deserves at *least* a brief mention in comparison to the other two. I researched both the Ring Pro and the Skybell HD thoroughly and determined that the Skybell HD was the best option for me. No facial recognition, but a better price and no subscription needed. People need to know about the main options in order to make an informed decision.

Sounds like people will be walking around trying to find doors with these to steal them since they are easily removed.... Recording the theif will yield no results with the local police as they don't ever give a shit when cars, etc. are broken into.
