If anyone is considering an 1ZPRESSO, I’m just here to say that you can make the jump without worrying about the decision. I’ve had my JX Pro for about 18 months now and the quality is truly fantastic. Well worth the money. I’ll probably be buying another 1ZPRESSO in the next year so I can just leave one at work.
Glad to hear that feedback Jeffrey! I've reviewed many 1ZPRESSO grinders in the past and many before a lot of info was available on the internet (other than a few forums and reddit) so I always love to hear the longevity of these items when I recommend.
@@KyleRowsell thanks for making cool coffee videos, Kyle. Since I know you have a Bullet, how do you approach roasting a washed vs a natural process coffee? I’m getting better at roasting, but it’s still tough for me to decide on the right target development time when considering processing methods
I used the JX-Pro for everything from cold brew to espresso. I love that it literally does everything. In my opinion its like a non-motorized niche. I absolutely love it. Best investment ever.,
Something to note as someone with a K-Plus: that rubber wrap that you use as a hand grip will pop off after about 2 years, after the adhesive dries out, which leaves behind a nicely textured milled aluminum surface. I actually prefer it this way.
This 1Zpresso company should seriously consider simplifying their product lines. There are waaay too many unnecessary series and products under different names with no significant differences. It's very easy to get confused and lost what each one does. I am aware they offer guideline but there are just way too many things. Stop adding new series!! THREE (or four max) hand grinders should be more than enough from one company.
@@proudbacteria1373 I'm not happy with 1Zpresso's 5+ different series and 13+ grinders either. They even all share the same design with super minor changes. Too much choice isn't a good thing. Comandante is expensive but understandable considering the grind/cup quality they produce. Its electronic grinder equivalents are at least 2-3 times more expensive.
Finally the comparison of x-pro with other grinders. So happy to hear that I made a right choice and bought the x-pro from Rogue Wave Coffee two months ago. My other choice was jx-pro, did not choose it because of the better design, heptagonal burr and easier external adjustment of x-pro. Maybe it is a bit overkill for the first grinder for me but I am enjoying coffee grinded by x-pro. Thank you so much for your videos they are really helpful!!
I just got my X-Pro 2 days ago. It's not slow grinding for espresso. 19g of medium roasted beans, at grind setting 3.5 done in under a minute. Although the effort required is fairly significant.
@@ipedros7 Well I ended up daily driving mine 2 cups a day for the past 8 months and only just retired it last week as I got my new powered grinder. It's made very good espresso and I've been very satisfied with it. You get used to the workflow and learn to use it quickly. Practically zero retention though you need to screw/unscrew the cup twice. First time to empty the grounds, put the cup back on and knock it downwards 2-3 times firmly on the counter to dislodge the retention around the burr. Even with all that screwing and unscrewing of the cup, I've had zero issues with it and my unit has worked flawlessly up till now. The build quality speaks for itself.
@@keebmods thanks. I was meaning how the grinder and it's bearings faired. Glad all OK. My unit arrived a couple of days ago and compared with my previous hand grinder its 2x faster, taking 55s on 4 for a dark roast So smooth it's incredible. Very pleased so far and will make a great for travel too.
I recently bought the JX for my office based on your earlier videos and candid observations. I use it exclusively for V60 pour overs. Really love it. Thanks for these videos.
1Zpresso are an amazing company for consumers. Even if they are somewhat flooding the market and have extremely confusing naming systems, they are consistently putting out innovative and competitive products. Something like the Commandante may have been innovative at launch but has not progressed significantly since.
Woo! Finally have someone to fall back on when I suggest the X-Pro. Owned mine since Rogue Wave Coffee carried them (September 2022) and don't regret buying it. Great quality, great consistency, great speed. Great video. And great review imo. Directly compares the X Pro to some of the most popular grinders currently on the market in the pourover range. Pretty much voices all the pros and all the cons I have of the grinder. I am curious on your thoughts on the X-Pro via espresso, though.
@@KyleRowsell even if it didn't, I would still appreciate the review. More reviews of a product(s) means more data. Which means more strengths and weakness of a grinder will be showcased.
I’m on a crossroads right now since after hand grinding again after a long time, i know i need to upgrade my cheap-o grinder and your video made me decide to get this model. Thanks!
I’m going to give it a try tomorrow, but I appreciate the chart to give me a place to start: Aeropress 1.1 to 1.5 (70 clicks - 110 clicks) French Press 2.4 to 3.1 (160 clicks - 190 clicks)
To me the biggest feature of the X-PRO is the new zeroing method for the grind adjustment dial, it's almost like cheating when compared to the J-Max or K-Max, made me want to grab one as a K-Max user🥵
This was a great review for someone like me who is an amateur. Massive appreciation for the slurp warning. I have misophonia and slurping makes me want to crawl out of my skin.
Started off with a hario slim and moved onto the Q2 with an aeropress when camping. This got me into specialty coffee. Was thinking about getting an electric grinder at home and moving into espresso but for now the aeropress is so easy and I prefer a longer drink. This grinder is appealing
I often buy Americano in cafes when they make espresso and then add hot water. I don't find their coffee better than Aeropress coffee made at home especially if you have a quality grinder. The advantage of extracting concentrated coffee by espresso machines gets wasted when you dilute it with water.
I bought one from Rogue after I saw your areropress video! Love it! Only problem is I dropped it and it tweaked the adjustment ring so it wasn't perfectly round so it would rub in certain spots and made adjusting rough where it was smooth as butter before. Super bummed but a rubber mallet and quick touch with a propane torch got it close to round again and still makes delicious cups. Don't make my mistake and don't drop it!
@@KyleRowsell I managed to knock off the bottom catch cup on the Magnetically attached one on the K-Plus, made a little dent on the very edge but it's just cosmetic, I wouldn't want to drop any grinder or espresso machine, or camera lens no matter how well built, the better they're built the heavier they are, the harder they fall :O
My first grinder was the K-Plus and I also got a Q2 to fit inside my Aeropress for travel. Great grinders. Love the coffee they produce. The k-plus is definitely an upgrade in terms of flavor. However I think any 1zpresso grinder would be a good buy.
I've got the Knock Aergrind as my travel grinder that fits in an aeropress. Have you seen the Knock? I basically bought it because James Hoffmann was positive about it, it fit in an Aeropress, and I got one half price as a factory second (looks perfect - just end of line when they changed up the model earlier this year).
Great video! I have a K Plus for 2 years now so I understand the quality of this brand. Given the longevity of the burrs I don’t think I will be getting another grinder anytime soon. But great to know the updates!
Right on! Ply at Rogue Wave also suggested this grinder to me. I was hesitant but went for it. The 1Zpresso X-Pro is a fantastic purchase! I do believe I'm satisfied having procured a hand grinder that out performs everything I've amassed (so many grinders). I can't tell if it's the best. It's mainly used for French press and Clever brewing. I still get a bunch of fines. I would love to compare this to the 1Zpresso ZP6. Wonder if I would prefer that more? Exceptional video, fellow Canadian! We always love to see new videos from you :)!!!
You’re too kind friend. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it! Is it the best? Maybe not with other grinders like the k series but for a filter coffee brewer, it’s easily one of the best
My first hand grinder after a Porlex was an 1zpresso Q2. The difference was basically night and day. It was quite surprising to me that Taiwanese companies could make something with such a substantial build quality and use quality for so much less!
Great video as always! Really glad to see you doing a pourover for taste comparisons. As I’ve said before, it’s a much better way to compare grinders than a cupping would be. If I weren’t planning to get the DF64 I would have to seriously consider upgrading to this from my JX.
I have the K Plus and it has been a dream! It also has rubber on the bottom of the magnetic catch cup. You really can’t go wrong with any grinder from 1Zpresso
Hey which is your favourite out of interest? I have the K-Max and I’m wondering whether I should have bought the C40 instead as I like a lot of sweetness. I don’t feel like the K-Max is very sweet but I have nothing to compare it with directly. Any thoughts? Might all just be in my head…
@@leematthews3083 my favorite is the JX-Pro, as it gives me the most adjustability. It’s after the K-Max in ease of use though, cause of the external grind setting
The adjustment per click is more than four times finer than the C40, more than twice as fine as Red Clix. The often quoted 30 micron clicks of the C40 refer to the approximate change in particle size, not movement of the burr. 0.7mm thread pitch / 12 clicks per round = 58.3 microns (29.2 w/red clix) Just pointing this out because a lot of other videos get this completely wrong and have led to the false perception that anything less precise than 15 microns per click isn't good enough for espresso.
@@KyleRowsell You can measure the thread pitch with calipers or just compare the typical click settings. The click count for each brew method is approximately 3 times higher with a JX or K-Plus. C40 espresso ~12, drip ~26, french press ~32 JX (25 micron) esp. ~28, drip ~78, f.p. ~93 K-Plus (22 micron) esp. ~37, drip ~85, f.p. ~95
Great video. Any chance you can comment on how this one stacks up against the Kingrinder K6 (which is a bit cheaper and IMO better looking, as well as supposedly being faster)
Hey Kyle, Fantastic video as per usual. Man, I have to say, your production quality.. is something else. It is truly comparable to the best videos I’ve seen on RU-vid in general but without a doubt when it comes to Coffee related content. I love the comedic edits haha, it really does add to the overall quality of the video. Keep on keeping on 😊 Quick question: did you do any espresso tests ? You made a comment on it being slow so you’d recommend the K series. But what about the quality of espresso. Considering it’s 2/3rd of the cost of K series.. I think some people might be okay with the extra effort as long as the cup compares. Can you please share your thoughts on the cup quality of espresso in comparison to the K series, if you got a chance to try it for espresso. I’m choosing between the two grinders but want the ability to grind for espresso as well, so this would be super helpful. Cheers !
This really means the world. Few people know this but I have no background in filmaking or photography. I learnt it all and spent thousands out of pocket to produce the best quality coffee content I could share. So to hear these comments truly means more than you know!
@@KyleRowsell that’s amazing and impressive! Happy to hear that you’ve put in so much work for this and it’s clearly paying off. I forgot to mention this in my first comment but what I meant to say was that when it comes to coffee content, your videos are bar none the best when it comes to production quality. I genuinely mean that ! Also, sorry to ask ask again, but would You be able to comment on the espresso quality, assuming you got to try it ?
@@parkaros6980 thanks for that. Though I can’t take that title as Hoffmann has bigger budgets and crews than I could ever ha. It’s just me a camera and a computer here. I also hope my content quality matches production value! I did brew espresso and it’s great. Similar to the c40. I’m just not a fan of slow espresso grinding
@@KyleRowsell haha Hoff is definitely on a different level but I genuinely do feel that your content compares and is right there! Thank you for answering my question! Looking forward to a lot more exciting content. Cheers !
My first grinder was a Timemore Chestnut C2 and I loved it but while it was perfect for my moka pot (size and grind) many told me it wasn't recommended for espresso grinds and I did have to put some effort towards the grinding and took some time due to the smaller diameter that beans entered and shared space within. Lastly the metal house while assisted my hand that held down the grinder it also hurt due to the bumps that assisted. I used a cheap bench clamp to instead hold down the timemore vs using my hand which helped greatly. Just got the J-Max grinder that can handle an espresso grinding size and while it still requires some effort when turning the crank it is less effort then the Timemore and having a bigger diameter allows for faster grinding with less rotations needed. Just got the J-Max a month ago but now I feel more influenced to actually buy fresh beans and grind it vs using Kcups as I rush about certain aspects of my day. Curious how other reviewers will compare this new grinder with J-Max and K-Max. I went for the J-Max not just being extremely beloved by others, $50 cheaper, and more control per click towards the grind size (takes some time to experiment to find the right sizes per brew methods but when doing so gives a extra level to the cups). The K-Max had some interesting features over the J-Max that I wish was incorporated into the J-Max (maybe a V2 J-Max) but ultimately I still leaned to the J-Max.
Great video Kyle! A friend has just ordered one so I may have the chance to taste some amazing cups It's a shame the giveaway is only opened to US and UK but I also understand shipping costs are quiet high right now...maybe better luck on the patreon prizes :)
How does 1Zpresso manage to bring out an exciting and compelling new product just when it so happens that I'm looking to get a new hand grinder, and wanted to otherwise try other cup profiles from my JX Pro? This X-pro will definitely be a contender, especially if its basically a better version of the Q2 Heptagonal.
Hello, I'm looking for a high-quality grinder for espresso, and I want to know if the 1Zpresso J-Ultra is a good choice. Are there other grinders like the Comandante or Timemore that I should consider? What do you suggest? Thanks in advance.
Seems the ordering from broader/more espresso oriented grind distribution to more unimodal/pourover oriented goes: JX/J-Pro/J-Max > K-Pro/K-Max > Q2/X-Pro > ZP6 special. If I can infer, the C40 falls into the K-Pro/K-Max range.
I ordered the x-pro last week and can't wait for it to arrive, I also am not a fan of the 1zpresso branding, maybe i'll find some kind of sleeve to wrap over their branding. Bit of an upgrade from my Hario Skerton.
Worth an upgrade from the Jx? Isn't a muddier bed resolved by grinding more coarse? If you dialed in each of the grinders to their best cup quality, I wonder how big of a difference there would be? Hard to not keep wanting new gear but that's my fault for watching these videos!
Kyle, great you got this excellent X-Pro review out so quickly! I asked Ply this question, but he suggested to ask you - how do you think this clarity-focused X-pro conical hand grinder compares to flat burr grinders like the Ode, Ode+SSP and VarioW+ in terms of cup quality?
That's a complicated question and not something as easy to answer since it's apples and oranges. I think the X-Pro is a personal favourite but to be clear, it's conical burr. They will more or less always have a different profile than a flat. The SSP MP burr is the clarity king. But that's not always what people are seeking for... but think so because someone online raved about it. I'd recommend trying these different grinders if possible (Borrowing from a friend? Going to a local retailer? Local cafe that sells them?) and testing them. This will give you a better understanding of the difference.
@@KyleRowsell This is the best answer you could have given :). SSP MP might be what I'm looking for, then. I didn't know clarity is what I was after. I like my coffee closer to water than sludge (if that reference makes sense?). I don't think I'll ever get to try the SSP MP on anything, but the X-Pro is fun. I tried double grinding yesterday and I didn't notice any improvement on my Clever Dripper. But did notice improvement in my Clever using Wet WDT :).
Just like the Lagoon Mini and Kingrinder K6, there will be subbyle differences. Side by side you can tell they are different but they share some similarities to the C40 burr. It's legit hard to remember what the differences though and you do need them side by side to tell. It's interesting to try them and see if they produce different cups but that's something I'd have to buy more similar grinders for and TBH I'm happy with my grinder. You'll notice I didn't say which one I have and that's the point.
@@KyleRowsell all of them are very slightly different in actual geometries. C40 has different height of breaker but the cutting edges come up higher in the breakers. ZXP has again slight differences between it and C40 in where and how high, etc. If you put them side by side on the same plane and look at each individual tooth and surface you'll start to see them. The weird stuff your brain decides to concentrate on with ADHD...
@@KyleRowsell although this is with one of them next to one of them and it could just be rotation. I'd have to get physical burrs and micrometer to truly compare or know sources of burrs to truly say but I'm noticing visible differences like height, cutting edge climb, number of cutting surfaces, etc. Again though... Might just be rotation.
@@skatcat31 Kingrinder lately dropped significantly prices on all their grinders. K6 now costs $99. I thought initially to buy Timemore C3 but ordered K2 for $55.
Hi, does Q2 and Xpro use the same burr? If not, what's the different between them(Just for flavor and taste). Actually I'm looking for a budget grinder which is closely to the Comandante C40.
I have JX-Pro and it is the best grinder I ever have so far. Great constructioun, perfect adjustment, easy cleaning.... if You want to make some work for your cap of espresso, go for it. Its simply amazing.
Upgraded from Jxpro to Kpro and gotta say a couple things: 1. Kpro ain't a Jxpro upgrade. Just a different tasting grinder with a different adjustment mechanism, different target. Both are all rounders, can't go wrong with any. Jxpro has wider adjustment range and it's easier to crank too. 2. K series external adjustment is great but sensitive to water. If some water gets in, it's over. This happened to me. This sounds incredible buts it's true. Amazing grinders but fcking water sensitive. Jxpro will never get damaged in case you put them in contact with water.
Hi Kyle, thank you for another great review. Can you please compare the X-PRO TO the K-PLUS. I think they have similar burrs but K-PLUS doesn't have the same issues and maybe faster?
Probably similar I'd think. K plus burrs are a bit larger, so it does grind faster. I wonder if the X has better clarity? But K-Plus burrs are also really nice, I haven't tried the new X series.
Just ordered it based on your recommendation through the link. this is my first hand grinder. For my espresso grinder I’m torn between niche and df64P. Since I’ll be using the Xpro for pour over which would you recommend for espresso? I have a Bianca on the way also another expense inspired by your channel. Keep up the great content.
@@johnvuela1211 it’s a good grinder. The dial range is quite wide so dialing in is tedious. Just picked up a c40 as well this week so I’ll have more to compare later
Great video! Just one question about the 1Zpresso JX - what is the maximum usable “coarse” (i.e., how many counter-clockwise rotations from zero position before the burrs start coming apart?)
Hi, I don't find much content comparing X-Pro or similar hand grinders with the electric ones in the same price range (Baratza Encore ESP). Hand grinders are always in a comparison with their own, but ultimately I want to know if the quality of espresso will be way better than the entry level espresso grinders (Opus, Barattza esp, etc..) and if the hand grinders perform better, then how much better (as good as Niche?) What would you go for overall in this budget?
I just got the Flair 58 and need a gringer to pair with it. It is just for me. Would the new 1zpress x ultra work for this espresso machine? Or woudl you recommend the D64p. I just got the new Ode gen 2 for coffee, so don't want to spend to much for my first one. This is my first espresso machine and will be my fist espresso grinder. Thanks. Keep up the great reviews!
Hy Mr @KyleRowsell let me ask you. Which would you find doing a better job K6 or XPro? I want to buy one but I'm in doubt about those two guys. Thanks a lot
Hi all! I am interested in a coffee grinder for Turkish coffee. Unfortunately, I can't find the JX Pro in Canada right now. Can you recommend the X-Pro version for it? I'm interested in your thoughts. Thanks in advance.
Hey man! I bought the JX based on your recommendations a year ago and I love it. Can you tell me how many clicks you consider medium/ fine on the JX, if you were using a light roast Ethiopian coffee?
Today, I have got my X pro S grinder. I loved it. I have a question about this grinder. Interestingly, 0 was not in its place. It starts 5 click before 0. However, I saw in table that grinding size starts from 0. So how can I start counting clicks (from which point) if I want to adjust it for pressurized basket? Actually I want to make espresso with naked portafilter but I need to know just starting point for pressurized first and then go back more fine grind setting rotating it to counter clockwise. What would you recommend? I think even it starts from 5 click before 0 , I should come by normal rotating it to 0 first and only after to start counting clicks following the table for brew methods of official 1zpresso for X pro grinder although mine is X pro S model/
I want that thing so bad. I like my - only recently bought - JX, but I don't love the adjusment mechanism, but I love the external adjustment on my K-Plus. So the X-Pro is perfect to replace my JX.
lol right!! just when you think you’ve narrowed down your search an found a good option…they make a comment about another option being better or see many negative reviews…I’m trying to do both pour over an espresso, an for the $150-$175 is what Im happy with. I was going to go X Pro but now I wonder if J Max is better? reeeeee
@@kdub175 If it helps, I got the jx-pro and I couldn't be happier with it. I use it mainly for espresso but it has plenty of room for the coarser side.
@@UntakenNick oh yeah? Okay, well it just adds another option haha I figured the X pro was better than the JX, an then above that we have the K Max & the K Ultra…Idk 😅 like you said too many options. But I guess I can eliminate the K Ultra as it’s basically the same as the K Max, an then it’s up to wether or not I wanna spend $150 or $280 which I rather stay at $150…so yeah gonna be between the JX & X Pro, but Im glad to hear you’re happy.
How does the x-pro compare to the 7burr q2? I have just started brewing coffee with a moka. I'm not planning on buying any expensive coffee machines for espresso or anything like that, but I'd love to purchase my first grinder. I'm still a student so budget is tight, but if the x-pro is worth spending the extra 50 dollars I'd do it.
Anyone know how the 1ZPresso compares to the Knock Aergrind? Very happy with my Knock as a travel grinder (got a great deal on a new old stock one when they updated it earlier this year) but not sure how this stacks up as a similarly priced all-metal hand grinder...
Hi Kyle! will you be doing a roasting video soon? I saw you have the Bullet and the M10 on your back. I have an M10 and would be nice to watch a video of you about it! eagerly waiting :)
