Great review! I’m on my third pair of summit unknown. Last pair went 750 mi before that felt flat. Lugs still were in good shape. No tears or holes in the upper. You can find them for under $70 now online. Great shoe!

I just ran my first ultra road race in the NB More V3 and also bought the More Trail V2 on sale. I love them, so I'm excited to give these a try as well! Thanks for the quality review Chad!

Great Review!!!! Convinced me to pull the trigger and get this shoe. Tried them today on a trail near home, ran 4.5 miles. Loved them. These are awesome. Great snug fit, light, and very comfortable with that Fuel Cell foam and rock plate. I will call these Rebel v3 on steroids. Will use for my first 10k trail race in a week.

I admit, I enjoy how you give comments to other RU-vidrs as you watch their channel and provide professional feedback. So how does this compare to the Adidas Ultra Speed? You are the true ambassador for this shoe as I admit its a fast and nice shoe, unfortunately for me shorter distance…up to 21km I’m a plush runner Hoka Mafata type for over 21km Ultras. Have a great weekend and as always great video and review.

Thank you for the comment! I'm still loving the Speed Ultra trail shoes! It's hard not to put all the miles in those shoes (haha) and I am planning to use it on my 100k trail race in late July. The NB Summit Unknown is also great compared to the adidas TERREX Speed Ultras. The Summit Unknown has a little bit more midsole stack which offers just a little bit more plushness underfoot (though still not a "high stack" shoe compared to other options/brands) and the addition of the rock plate is really nice too. I like the lockdown feel, breathability, and water drainage of the Speed Ultras more and feel that the outsole is a little grippier, although it doesn't have it as deep of lugs compared to the Summit Unknown v4's. Thanks for watching the review video!

Great review. Keen to see how long the rubber lasts. I disagree with you sizing. I had to size up from a 11 - 12 - and i have run in 10s before), but even the 11.5 was tight or short around the big toe. The width less of an issue although I do have wide feet . In comparison the NB Hierro which is a 2E (wider shoe) I find it true to size.

Amazing review! Makes me excited to get on the trails. Would you go with this shoe, or the Saucony Peregrine 13?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 3 месяца назад
Thank you so much! Both would be great options. I haven't ran in the Peregrine 13 but would presume that it would offer a little better traction while the Summit Unknown v4 would feel just a little more agile and lively underfoot. I think both would be great shoes!

Thanks for watching the video! I've been really impressed with the shoe. Speaking of Salomon, in about a week I'll be getting the Pulsar Trail Pro 2’s to test and review. Will be interesting to see how those compare.

@@SeeChadRun I’ve got the regular Pulsar Trail from last year. The Trail Pro appeared to have poor ankle hold. Hoping that’s one of the changes. I understand they’ve eliminated the Trail from the line up but address the heel cup might make it redundant. Looking forward to that vid!

Goo review, thanks! I'm really keen on this shoe, and find it v interesting you compare it to the Terrex Speed Ultra - that's my fav shoe too! Would you say it performs similarly? when would you use the NB over the Terrex? thanks a lot, Jim
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 10 месяцев назад
Both shoes are agile and quick. I would choose the Speed Ultra when I knew my shoe would be getting wet or for streaming river crossings. It shows water substantially better. I would choose the Summit Unknown v4 when I want a little more underfoot protection (thanks to the rock plate) or a tad more cushioning. All this said, even though the Speed Ultra doesn't have as deep of lugs, I feel that overall it has the better traction, at least for Colorado trails. Hope this helps and I appreciate you checking out the video! If you're interested, here's a pretty gnarly run that I did in the NBs, they can also check out my never summer 100k race video where I ran that race in the Speed Ultras: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AQTaT_ybERQ.htmlsi=OthYZmlLPiAYwLZW

@@SeeChadRun - interesting point about the NB lugs. I was wondering on those shoes if those straight lateral lugs are any good? have you taken them into mud much? I basically just want the Speed Ultras with longer lugs!!
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 10 месяцев назад
I have ran the NB through mud and it did decent, certainly better than the Speed Ultras in mud. Overall the grip is good (not perfect) but it seems that the Speed Ultras utilize a better rubber compound for rocky conditions. Again, the New Balance grip isn't bad by any means and I never felt that I was going to lose my footing, but I do think it could benefit from a few more lugs and a slightly softer rubber compound.

one last thing - the Terrex has got to be the GOAT shoe for dry, technical, fast trails. I never get bored of those shoes.

I haven't tried the Saucony Ultra Trail yet but I have ran in the Saucony Ride 15 TR. The TR has a nice underfoot feel though isn't as nimble feeling as the NB Summit Unknown v4.

Hi do you know the drop of that shoe ,is it 10mm drop? I love solomon speedcross 4. The sole has sanded off. I want to run vibram. What would you recommend? I loke your channel and product reviews. Thanks
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 6 месяцев назад
Thank you so much! The NB Summit Unknown v4 has a 6mm drop. The grip is decent enough but not quite as good as Vibram. Seems like a lot of new shoes are coming out with Vibram outsoles which I think is a great thing. I'll be reviewing the Altra Timp 5 and Topo MTN Racer 3 soon, both of which have a Vibram also. The Puma Voyage NITRO 3 with a PumaGrip ATR outsole is also nice (8mm drop) as a daily trails trainer.

These or the Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra? And how do they compare to the speedland hsv?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for giving me a follow on Strava! I've got a lot of family in Utah. As for the shoes, if push came to shove I'd choose the TERREX Speed Ultras. They're just a little bit more agile and shed water more easily, but the New Balance has a really nice rock plate and a little more hold around your ankle. The Speedland HSV is a phenomenal shoe and it has a similar ground feel as the other tissues mentioned. That said, I love the BOA fit and quality build but not sure I'd spend my own money on it.

what distance do you think the New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown v4 are suitable for?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun Год назад
I recently ran a 50 mile trail race in the adidas TERREX Speed Ultra shoes which has even less stack than the Summit Unknown v4. I think for most users the Summit Unknown v4 would be fine up to 50k, although I wouldn't hesitate to use them for much longer distances personally.

I’m just getting started in trail walking/ hiking and looking for a good trail shoe. I’m looking at Hoka speedgoat 5 and the Zinal 2. How do you feel this New Balance compares to those? Or is there something else that you can recommend? Thanks!
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun Год назад
I haven't tried the Hoka shoes so I can't comment on how they compare. My guess is that the Hoka Speedgoat 5 has a little more cushioning with a slightly softer feel. I'm also assuming that the New Balance has a slightly more narrow fit compared to the Hoka shoes.

@SeeChadRun If you have experience with Salomon Sense Ride 5 or 4 and have to choose between them and New Balance Summit Unknown v4 which would you choose?
@SeeChadRun
@SeeChadRun Год назад
That's a great question! I think the Sense Ride 5 and Summit Unknown v4 probably compete very well together, but that said, I have not ran in the Sense Ride's yet. I have ran (and recently shared my performance review video) in the Salomon Pulsar Trail Pro 2. For me, that was a great shoe but if it were my own money, I'd save myself 40 bucks and go with the Summit Unknown v4.

It would probably be fine, although this shoe doesn't have a lot of midsole so depending on what you're looking for, you may want something with a little more underfoot cushioning and support. The shoe does have a rock plate which would be great for hiking.
