This is a price that makes sense and with great footage it’s the perfect camera to take on your travels. Rugged waterproof and simple to operate. Touchscreen control with great viewing in direct sunlight. Voice activation and GoPro massive accessory choice. This is the best camera to take and make all your memories with.

The full review is up. I go into some great detail on the stabilization around the middle of the video. The take home point is that the HERO and HERO5 seem to have the same stabilization. It is good but not as good as on the HERO6. Battery life was not touched on but it is around 1h40min

If it is stabilised I'm interested in that one if it performs well. 1080p is enough for my use but battery usage can be another matter with more cpu processing.

The stabilization is on par with the HERO5 so better then nothing but not amazing. It gets about 1h40min of battery

Thanks, that's a pretty good battery life I think. I think Hero 6 has then a point with it's amazing stabilizer (assuming it works well in vibrating environments, not just slower wobbles)

I don't think you are going to get a huge improvement in quality with an upgrade. You may get some benefits from how easy the camera is to use but your GPH3+ will have a lot more options than the new HERO.

Interesting that they are exactly the same weight, suposadly the cost reduction has been delivered by using lower spec components but when you look at the cost of development and testing to do that I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a gp6 or gp5 with a firmware fix to reduce capability. If I am correct then gp are taking a huge risk that someone won’t produce a jaibreak for the firmware. Commercially the company had to do this to survive 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁 but personaly I would have made it a different colour so that the snob factor of having the top/best model isn’t compromised. Many people buy the best and latest just because and may not use all the new features, I fear they may have compromised the premium sales by making it identical. Great first review looking forward to your in-depth analysis.

I am going through the sample video I shot today and it is amazing how similar the footage from the HERO5 and this new HERO is. Even the in camera stabilization is looking identical. The side by side comparison shorts are going to be really interesting. In my opinion I think the new HERO is a GPH5 with a striped down firmware. Everything is pointing me to that even the logo on the mode button on the side of the camera. The give away for me was the fact that in both video and photo mode you have access to all the different field of view options indicating the cameras sensor is capable of more then just 1080. I would be ok with almost everything they did but they locked down the interval between photos in timelapse mode to 0.5 seconds, which seems really arbitrary. I was also really surprised to see the camera was not white, my assumption is they tried to do as little new tooling as possible for this camera hence keeping the tag symbol on the mode button like on the GPH5 instead of the Power symbol like the GPH6 and Fusion.

Any ideas what is the image sensor used? Is it their own?

As far as I can tell it is the same one used in the HERO5. I know that may not be super helpful. From what I can find around the internet it seems the HERO4 and HERO5 shared the same sensor the Sony IMX117 I have not yet taken the camera apart but basted off the sample video I have got the HERO5 and new HERO appear to share the same sensor and image processor.

It is good value. It seems that is is just a GPH5 with a striped down firmware. So you are getting a good sensor and solid image performance

Well then get to ordering. The full review is up on my channel the footage from the HERO and HERO5 look identical. It almost seems like the HERO just a HERO5 with custom firmware.

I ownt buy any of the new ones, ive got 2 hero 4 blacks and ill make them last. They dont come with the same accesories and they dont have the protection of being in the plastic shell.

Nope! Plus if you want to take them more than 10m underwater you need to go buy a waterproof case!

They are competing with so many other companies they had to drop the price..and is still over priced...the hero has become the villain...the karma crushed them

It is really true. The Karma was a disaster, everything about the timing and press when they launched was bad and then the recall on top of that. It will be interesting to see what the next few years hold for them. I am rendering out the full review right now and it is really interesting. I agree is is not cheap enough to compete with things like the SJ5000 but for $200 the image quality is really quite good!
