Yeah, but this Panamera hybrid is approx 140,000 K and the other Panamera hybrid is approx 80,000 K. Admittedly its specs are not at the same level, but the price premium for the top of the line model is in no way justifiable.

@@Ramuis166 Yes but for long distance air travel or remote operation of engines, it might be the only option that is close to carbon neutral. There are also other ways to do Power-to-Fuel and also Solar-to-Fuel as well as bio-fuels. Also, like Henry correctly pointed out, they are typically drop-in capable, as they are very close to regular fuel, which is a huge advantage for flight (planes are renewed maybe every 30 years or so).

@@evandentes4716 i'm sorry but you do not seem to understand physics... The problem with e fuels is the efficiency of the processes involved. It's only viable at all if you use renewable energy, and you will need a lot more energy to get an ice car with e fuels over a distance of 100km than you need to get an electric car over the same distance. Only if we have an enormous overproduction of renewables this will be an actual option

I like your conclusions. The ICE isn't the enemy, the fuel we run them with currently, is. Funny, I recently thought about the way a BEV launch feels in comparison to an ICE and thought the same. The ICE builds up the speed in a much more pleasant way. The BEV just gives a big initial hit and then tapers off. Feels strange and not so nice. Lastly - kudos to the tshirt - I also have one :)

Glad you plugged the E-fuels. Needs to be a more public discussion on this as when you factor in the environmental impact of bringing the charging network up to what’s required I suspect the E-fuels will start to be more competitive. Also it would be good to see some subsidies headed Porsches way for E-fuel development as that again would lead to a reduction in cost & improvement to efficiency. On a purely selfish note I just don’t want to contemplate a future that has no combustion engine in it !
@titaniummechanism3214
@titaniummechanism3214 7 месяцев назад
We can use E-fuels for everything we can't or don't want to power with electricity or with hydrogen. As with hydrogen production, e-fuels are a lot less energy efficient than just using the electricity in an electric car or a train. And we'd need to built enough factories to produce that stuff and enough generation capacity and power grid infrastructure to support those factories. I don't see what would be to gain by going that way.

@Nick-qx1vf 3 года назад
@@wc8561 At first it was my disbelief that something that weighs the thick end of 5,000 pounds could feel so agile. The Panamera does that thing great cars do where it wraps itself around you like a warm blanket on a cold day. You're almost at one with it. The steering is sharp and accurate (maybe lacking in feedback from the road surface, but it's so direct it almost makes up for that). Plus the rear-wheel steering really helps. You really can feel the thing pivot in tighter bends. Porsche's ceramic brakes are the best in the business, too. They're immediate, as in the braking starts right at the top of the pedal. There's no squeezing to do. You want to stop? It stops, and in a hurry, too. It's also ridiculously fast, sounds great, and is comfortable on longer commutes (took a road trip in it just to be sure). It feels just like the 992 I drove in 2019, but bigger and much faster (in a straight line).

What Henry forgot to mention is that these e-fuels are super expensive because breaking water into hydrogen and oxygen is very onerous from an energy point of view, and the laws of physics say it cannot be improved. When all is said and done, making a few liters of e-fuel uses vast amounts of energy, and then 65% of that fuel will be wasted as head (see Carnot cycle) when transformed into mechanical power in the ICE . So altogether it could take 10kwh of energy to get 1kwh of mechanical energy for e-fuels, versus maybe 2kwh of total energy to get 1kwh of mechanical energy with an electric car (after accounting for transmission and storage losses). No government will allow e-fuels to grow in any scale given this extra low energetic efficiency of e-fuels, particularly as we already have shortage of power generation in most places throughout the world. @lastlondon
@lastlondon 3 года назад
@@christopherayala4619 My comment is really in relation to e-fuels for car where EV is a viable solution, but clearly for aviation electric power is not possible given power density limit of batteries vs hydrocarbons. Still, if one wants a “closed-loop” fuel system (i.e. where carbon is taken out of the environment in order to produce fuel) then arguably bio-fuels (i.e. fuel made from plants) are a preferable alternative as they too take carbon dioxyde out of the environment (albeit not necessarily as much CO2 out of the air) and produce fuel at a much lower energetic cost than e-fuels. Porsche needs to let go e-fuels; there will be plenty of oil in the ground for decades to come, the governments will tax ICE cars and fuels to the point where it doesn’t make sense to buy new ones anymore. Older ICE will always run, and as oil price (pre-tax) increases over time as the existing supply dwindles, other oil wells that are currently not economical to exploit at less than $50 per barrel will become viable alternatives. Based one what I have read, fossil oil could still be cheaper than e-fuels even at $200 per barrel. Porsche should instead invest some money in carbon capture programs if they want to feel better about their ICE legacy

Panamera 4 e-hybrid isn’t nearly as nice to drive in comparison to the GTS and above. Porsche gave the ‘lesser’ models more of a comfort and day to day executive feeling rather than the punchy straight to the bends higher end models, especially seen by the GTS. As for the Taycan 4S? Well that’s interesting because you’re comparing a base electric Porsche to the top hybrid, i’d still take the Turbo S-E, but if electric stations are more dependable, then my choice could change.

Not sure when to use night vision? How about at night?

Does this complex drivetrain have simple load protection for the combustion engine ? Or does customer gently drive away out of the suburbs, and just hits the floor when the motorway appears ? Resulting in cold start -> Instant full load on the ICE.

With fly-by-wire throttle and boost control I doubt the system will give you fully loud when cold even if you ask for it.

I don’t know any friends that are worried about leaving emissions in the city and want to buy a emission free car. I do know people that like the instant power and torque from the electric cars.

Can we assume that if we make hydrocarbons from pure CO2 and H2 instead of extracting by refining crude oil, there would be much less impurities that lead to real pollution like PM?

Oil is not just extracted and refined to fuel transport.

The energy of the future is absolutely multifaceted. EVs for mega cities, hybrids for Suburbs/those who want them, traditional ICE vehicles for the country/people who drive long distances/performance enthusiasts. Efuels- gas, diesel. EVs. Maybe some hydrogen. The right solution for the right application. Not some blanket "EV everything" moronic idea. Also, man the Panamera has come far. Great job by Porsche.

Henry why doesn't it have the new Turbo S 630PS engine in it, instead of an uprated Turbo engine??
@fabi3276
@fabi3276 3 года назад
I think the gearbox can't handle the immense combined torque, so the 630PS engine can't be put into the plug in hybrid Panamera turbo s

I would like to make a suggestion: could you please make a video how to drive the damn thing, I mean after the battery deplets it's energy you have only the added weight! How should you use this contraption, charge every 40 miles, charge on the go , use the battery hold. Please could you elaborate on the use of the hybrid system.
@ColinMill1
@ColinMill1 3 года назад
Leave it in Hybrid auto is probably the best strategy. As for the hybrid system being dead weight there is one trick it can (and does) use even at constant speed. That is to use the motor/generator to load the engine to put it into a more efficient load condition and then use the electricity generated to "sail" later on. It's a bit like an automated burn and coast but using the battery rather than inertia as the energy store. Given that burn and coast can easily give 20% improvement in efficiency we might expect perhaps 15% from this system.

There's something about the GT63 S 4dr Coupe which doesn't sit well with me. I do like the roofline but I feel, personally, that the CLS serves as a more refined rendition of roughly the same design concept. I understand the GT63 S is significantly quicker, but as someone who appreciates the kinetic art dynamic of vehicles just as much as the performance, I'd rather go with the CLS53 and spend the remaining cash on some art for the house.

Why not fully electric? They have all the tech now right with the taycan...? Or was that just for show?

The Taycan SP is coming later in the year - or early 2022 - depending on the market.
