To elaborate on my blindside hits comment, if the play is live, then you're responsible for keeping yourself safe, so if it's a sport like hockey and you have your head down, that's kinda on you. But if the play is over, and your guard is down, that's the type of hit that I mean when I say blindsided hits have no place in sports.

Not long ago, almost every single one of those was a legal hit. Yes, noses get broken. Nobody who goes onto a football field worries about a broken nose. Honestly, if you don't have a tolerance for pain, there are other sports to play. I'm not throwing shade at all. Football is a sport where you intentionally collide with people with the maximum velocity you can generate. I'm not sure what that says about people who enjoy playing it. I suggest you watch a clip on the career of Dick Butkus... a player as "old school" as they come.

if the sound of the plastic helmets hitting gets to you on video replays I really want to see you go to an NFL game and hear that sound echo thru the stadium on a big hit. If you get lower tier seats and the impact in in your quadrant of the field you kind of feel the collision in your lungs like your chest was a drum and the sound waves were a drum stick.

The idea... wrap your noodle through it, is that until the whistle blows, their ENTIRE BODY is soooo tense, and with their strenuous training, it baffles most of the hit, and the repeated onslaught of pain, they really only relax after the whistle. If you get racked after the whistle, that's when you get serious injuries... the whole game their body is tense to the max to prevent that. They are the STARS of the game, and nobody really brings up that point. Build muscle around bone to reduce impact, keep it tense, and only relax after the whistle.

No broke noses!! Shoulder pads are thick and work well for impact. It looks a lot worse than it is most of the time. That's why a lot of players jump up so fast after a hit. If you don't take a helmet to the head most of the time it doesn't hurt.
@kickbuttmama

I’ve been an NFL fan for, um, let’s say a good long while. There have been very few serious injuries (aside from CTE which is only starting to become common knowledge). Most career ending injuries are from joint damage. But I do know of 2 severe spinal injuries to Jeff Fuller, in 1989, who ended up breaking his neck after a helmet-to-helmet hackle. The other one - Johnny Knox- from 2011 who ended up with several fractures to his vertebrae and needed a spinal fusion. Lawrence Taylor (probably one of the scariest defensive linemen ever) broke quarterback Theisman’s leg in half. There have been several really bad leg breaks. Napoleon Mccallum had a serious leg injury - ruptured the artery in his knee, and tore the calf and hamstring muscles from the bone. But, most were prior to 2000. Footballers actually learn martial art falls to learn how to relax on impact to help prevent injury. Back in the 80’s & 90’s, and even the 70’s, there were some crazy defensive linemen who truly terrified offensive players - LT (as stated above), Mean Joe Green, Ray Lewis, Ronnie Lott, Dick Butkus, etc. Troy Polamalu is a more modern one. Just to name a few.

I'm from America, and I played American football for 13 years as an offensive and defensive lineman, and you were very accurate in saying every play is like a car crash. You get enough power behind every hit on every play and it can definitely feel like that, and you absolutely wake up sore the next morning after a game. I've seen a number of hits like these that you kinda just shrug at and keep on playing. I've gotten clocked myself a time or two, and you just get up and keep going. The worst I ever saw, a teammate got knocked out on the field and when they woke him up and brought him to the sideline for medical care, he kept claiming he was at a local concert venue waiting for Pink Floyd to take the stage. And this was in the late 1990's/early 2000's, so take that for what it's worth. It took almost a quarter of the game before he was able to say where he was and everything. Definitely scary to see first hand something like that.

You gotta think about it. These guys have been playing this game their whole life. If they weren't able to bounce back from hits like this regularly, they would have been flushed out of the "game" early on. They still get injured quite often, but it's like they are all boxers with iron jaws because all the glass-jaws have all been filtered out just to get to this level. They're modern day gladiators.

Football and hockey players are generally very tough players. I expect Rugby players are the same, but never known any personally. They expect to get hit, and hit hard and have learned how to deal with it....unlike soccer players, some of whom a stiff breeze can send them into convulsions on the ground. With the padding, you're generally well protected from most hits, but your head getting jostled around definitely is a risk for concussions. As for broken noses, there's plenty of space between the cage of the helmet and the face and it is usually strapped down well enough to not move too much, so very little risk of getting smacked with it. Though they do usually wear a mouth guard to protect their teeth and tongues since a hit can snap the jaw closed and do some damage.
