While a whole load of new carbon plate racing shoes came out in 2020, Nike opted to leave the Vaporfly NEXT% as it was, settling for releasing new colours of the shoe while also launching the Alphafly NEXT%.
The Vaporfly has received a more comprehensive update in 2021, with the NEXT% 2 sporting an entirely new upper and coming in £30/$25 cheaper than its predecessor . In this video Run Testers Kieran and Nick talk through the changes to the shoe and whether the Vaporfly NEXT% 2 is an improvement on the original.

Great video. Getting ready for first marathon, training mainly in zoom x shoes ie Peg Turbo 2s invincible. And Vaporfly Next % for practice long runs, running in NYC Marathon in November, may rain, be cold, or warm. Which upper would be better for any weather conditions, esp cold/wet.

I have the next % and the next % 2, but I’ve had many issues with the 2. My 2’s don’t feel nearly as locked down as the next %. Also on the 2’s my sole has split and the plastic around the toe box is loose and coming up, which is crazy because I’ve put more miles in next %.

How is the comfortably and security in the 2's vs the 1's in a 5k? Like would you choose the 2's over the 1's? Because I will mostly race 5k's.

I can definitely confirm that next% 2 does rub the back of my foot. I recently ran 14k and had a really bad blister and infection on top of that so I had to take almost a 2 weeks break from running. It happened to me before even during 10k runs. My shoes are probably worn out though.

Great review. Had a pair of Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%, though just returned them to Nike as i got excessive wear on the inside rear sole of one. Foam was rubbing away just behind where the rubber inserts end. Not sure if anyone else has experienced that? To be fair to Nike, they took them back no problem and gave me a refund. Will give them another go just got to decide which version and which colour!

I’m finding getting a good lockdown more difficult in the 2, which possibly explains why I think the fit around the heel isn’t as great. Personally, I loved the vaporweave, but the fact these are 30 quid cheaper is a bonus.

Yeah that could well explain the heel problem, just need to pay a bit more attention to getting that fit nice and secure! Can't argue with £30 less though :)

I have previously commented now the OG is actually available in my country (no more fighting to click buy on Day 1) with the launch of the 2 (sold out) at lower price. You know what, Nike is brilliant and they had me. Nike gave me a 15% off, after discount the OG is cheaper. I went ahead and bought 2 pairs (one for me and another for my buddy). Thanks Nick and Kieran as always for the awesome comparisons.

Great review guys, thanks a lot. From my own experience the original vaporfly is quite narrow at the mid fot, making it a little bit thight and almost uncomfy after a few km, does the no. 2 has the exact same measurements? And, what app is that you using for workouts on the apple watch?

I think both are excellent and it's just a matter of choice: vaporweave vs mesh and rain/hot (better use %2) or standard climate (better use OG). OG is lighter (10g aprox in my US9.5 size, I have Mango OG and %2 blue and white) but I don't think 10g makes any difference.

Think about it like this, over 1 hour of running at a cadence of 175, you will lift 105kg less.

Hi, thank you for the review. Did you mention that the vaporfly are not legal for racing? it seems that they are, there was a ban, but than they were declared legal for tokyo. I was looking at the USA olympic marathon trial in atlanta, lots of runner with vaporfly

Hi! They are legal for road racing, but not allowed for track races. So all good for marathons :)

I'm doing my 2nd marathon in October and was going to buy these purely for the race. Would you recommend doing some pre race running in them? If so, how long? Do they need to be broken in, or do I need to get used to the feel?

I would do at least a single 20 km run in them. Maybe log a total of 50 kms before the marathon :-)

so the next%2 is a very nice shoe, and with minor modification allows Stryd to be positioned at the proper spot. Yet the blister thingy is confirmed. It is caused by the stitching above the soft heel support in the heel cup that rubs the Achilles during toe off and causes some serious blistering in my case. Maybe I will cut it off, but the I think that using kinesiotape will prevent the rubbing sufficiently as well too. Great review anyway, thx.

Sorry to hear the blistering is bad, let us know if cutting it off solves the problem! Tape worked well for me (Nick), but not ideal to have to tape up the heel each time you use the shoe

@@TheRunTesters I was warned blistering might occur, and the shoes are great as promised. So I take the nuisance for what it is. Cutting is still something in this shoe, as it aint that cheap, but I got them with a very nice reduction for just 175 euro. If Ill cut them it will be either in V-shape or semi-circular, ill post it here.

Hi guys, thank you for a brilliant channel. Nick, my question is primarily to you as I also have very narrow feet (last B). I am really happy for my Vaporfly 2 size UK 11. But they are a little bit to wide - and I should size down to UK 10,5, but then they get to short. Do you have any shoes you can recommend for very narrow feet? The Peg 37 was great, and now I have the Adiós 6 which even is too wide. Should I try a Vaporfly 1 now they are going on sale as they may be more narrow? Hope to hear from you. Hi Philip, hmm I think the Vaporfly is a little narrower so that could work. The adidas takumi sen 8 is narrow too, as another racing option. One other thing you could try is the women’s version of shoes, as sometimes they are narrower. That can be a gamble though, sometimes it as worked for me and sometimes it hasn’t haha

I've got a pair of the 2s, I've not run in them yet as my races have been put back to later in the year... I think I might jump on my treadmill and try this heel rub issue just in case..

Hi Nick, Kieran, I'm just about to buy and give my first try to Vaporfly Next% or Next% 2. Is it really better choice to go for Next% 2 instead of Next% originals? as you mentioned though minor issue with rubbing in the heel? For instance now I could buy originals for €220 vs Next5 2 for €250. Like new Next%2 OG in a very nice color, but I'm not sure if it's not better choice to take originals for even cheaper :) What do you say? Thanks a lot. Peter form Slovakia

Hi! Nick here. I’d say the performance is really the same underfoot where it matters, so go with the cheaper one I reckon! Unless the colourway is €30 better :)

@@TheRunTesters Hey Nick, thanks a lot for helping to make a good decision :) Hm, but, I'm still hesitant, not at least 99% sure that it's really worth to buy even originals for discounted price at closely below €200 as I've already got birthday discount promo code that can use even o further cut of the price. As I'm reading comments that originals are pretty narrow in the middle, next%2 making blisters, others mentioned that originals' upper is not so breathable etc. Then I'm asking myself why to go for that shoes? Isn't even better to take Endorphin Pro for marathon race??? is that Next% or %2 so better for getting PBs??? :)

Haha no problem, it’s a tough call! The Endorphin Pro is a great shoe and if you’re enjoying using it then I reckon take it to the marathon! Sure you’ll have a good run. You can always try Nike for the next one after that maybe :)

@@TheRunTesters I'm willing to invest into really great racing shoe for a long distance like my first marathon :) I assume I could do it below 3:30, but just thinking if for instance such "elite" racing shoe like Next% or %2 might really help me to cut a few seconds per km and to enable easier to get PB :) I mean visibly better than 3:30 :) or if Next% is so much comfy, giving so incomparable energy return/ride over such a long distance than any other even also great racing shoes like Endorphin Pro. Nick, honestly, I think no need to take Next% for 1/2 marathon instead of Endorphin Pro, but I'm just thinking if to invest for full marathon :) I appreciate a lot this chat with you about it, you're pretty experienced and had marathon races in various Nike top racing shoes :) Thank you so much!

The Nike shoes are fantastic and do help over the full marathon (though not as much as good training of course!), but I'm not sure the difference between them and the Endorphin Pro is huge. I did 15 miles at marathon pace in the Endorphin Pro just before I did my recent marathon in the Alphafly, and the Saucony is a really great shoe. The Nike might give you more of an edge, and I think it is a little more comfortable over a marathon, but it's close. I'd say that whatever decision you make, you'll have a great marathon shoe on your foot, and I'm sure you'll smash your target :)

My vaporfly 2 seem to have a lot of sag in the ankle area. They fit really well but look like they dont. Really strange.

For me the alphafly is way better than vaporfly, I don’t see the new upper changing that. Both are great for going fast in a straight line. Alphafly is way more stable cornering and it doesn’t fight you as much at a slower pace. Alphafly for half and marathon, vaporfly for 5k and 10k.

Heel flap looks like it's solely there for advertising. I'd be VERY tempted to just carefully snip it off with scissors.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I just really don't think anyone should be buying elite-grade shoes like this unless they are sub-3 marathon runners (at least). it's certainly the way I operate with shoe purchases/rotation, i.e. I won't be getting these or anything with a carbon plate until I've achieved a sub-3. I think Kieran mentioned how they were unforgiving when the form started to go, and that is a big factor. These shoes aren't designed for the average runner, and may do your progress a disservice (progress in terms of running style, efficiency, form - all of which you develop over the long term). Improve your fitness and running times with the amazing suite of non-plated shoes and then get these when you're rubbing shoulders at the front of the start line. Just my thoughts (nobody asked, I know)!
