No Heat Smart Valve Pilot Don't Ignite

The HVAC Hacker

I arrive at a no heat call. I find the Roof Top Unit inducer running yet cold air coming out of vents. The inducer starts and all safeties closed so the smart valve was lighting the hot surface ignitor. Yet the pilot wasn't lighting. This prevented the gas valve from energizing the main gas valve. I check gas and have gas present at the valve. I find the pilot hood wasn't putting the gas correctly across the Ignitor preventing the pilot from lighting. I bent the pilot hood to get the gas to go across. After this, the heating system would fire the burners off every time.

After 5 hours being annoyed with my furnace, new gas valve, new control board, I still had no pilot, nozzle was clogged. Good thing I do my own work, at least I only paid $300 for the parts, but the no pilot was annoying. Watching him made me check my pilot gas, was there, still couldn't light at the nozzle. Took the assembly out, found a small pin, cleaned out the nozzle, hurray, working furnace. Thanks man.

This was interesting, I wonder if that was the correct hot surface ignitor or if somewhere someone changed it and until the other RTU was shut down a day earlier for bad heat exchanger no one noticed this RTU wasn’t heating? We all need to help each other learn to get better in this trade. If more can do what I can and more my job becomes easier.

Honeywell smart valve system with low voltage HSI. So much more complicated than it had to be. The only thing I disliked worse was the old White Rodgers IID systems with the plug in mercury sensor at the gas valve. Was glad when everyone went to DSI and got rid of the pilot all together. A lot of those smart valves were defective at the plug connectors. We had one smart valve unit where a small beetle would climb into the pilot hood once a week, blocking the gas flow. For some reason the bug was attracted to that pilot. Good job hack.
@thehvachacker

These are interesting yet prefer having separate ignition module and gas valve. Did you kill the beetle to prevent any more callbacks? That had to be tough to figure out unless you found him in the pilot hood

@Kustomgadget
@Kustomgadget 2 года назад
I've seen this a couple of times, one just last week. For whatever reason, the ignitors doesn't work up to their full potential sometimes. A new ignitor will glow almost twice as bright and light the pilot every time. Sometimes I use a propane torch or lighter to light the pilot and the burners will work. I have broken the pilot assembly bending them that way. I hate when that happens. lol

@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 5 лет назад
Nice fix to get some hot water. The downfall to the on demand hot water heaters is most areas have a high mineral content in the water. This sticks to the inside of the heat exchanger. I hook a pump up and fill a 5 gallon bucket with water and ice machine cleaner and let that rinse through to clean off the mineral. Many issues are also found on the inlet screen which may get restricted.

interesting, thought maybe someone changed the pilot assembly or igniter and just jammed one in that was close, but after watching further, looked like it wasn't pulling and mixing air with the gas on the pilot, seemed to have a big lazy rich flame, and burning something out of it, so probably a bug/spider in the pilot tube above orifice or down inside blocking the air bleed holes. if you have pilot gas flow, the easiest way to confirm some blockage is a long lighter to light it manually. you can sometimes put flame into the air bleed holes and get what in there burnt out or clear it by blasting high pressure air through the side air holes or down the tube unhooked from gas valve. of course the igniter can get broken pretty easy playing with hoses and air, who hasn't broken them before fiddling around or dropping them, I've broken two in a row before on a rather sick and clumsy day :(
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 5 лет назад
I deleted the part where i removed the pilot tubing and checked to make sure nothing was blocking it. Pilot orifice and pilot hood looked clean no white dust powder build up and nothing restricted. The first light up I had the pilot gas cranked al the way.
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 5 лет назад
hmm, maybe the gas valve is starting to get stupid or just a large load of air mixed in the gas lines, because from what I recall on those units, the flame should have been nearly double what it was when you had it lit outside the unit. the yellowish could have just been rust when it first lit then, but who knows. I also assumed that was an air-bleed style, but I don't recall them 100%.

@sknight0391 5 лет назад
Jesse that's how smart valves operate. Black and white wires supply 24 volts to the valve, blue wire sends voltage to the igniter which lights a pilot flame and then the main burners like off of that. Then power goes through the orange wire to the main control board to turn the blower on. 👍
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 5 лет назад
Yea this is the infamous smart valve. The gas valve sends power to the ignitor as long as safeties are closed. They built the ignition module into the gas valve. I just want to know why did I have to bend the pilot hood so the gas for the pilot would hit the hot surface ignitor. This style gas valve was around for awhile. And many do not like it.

Usually around here we have standing pilots, spark ignition pilots which a spark ignites a pilot flame or gas off burner straight, then hot surface ignitor. Until we get to this infamous smart valve which uses the hot surface ignitor to light a pilot flame so the flame sensor sends a signal to gas valve to open main burner. This is an expensive overkill gas valve/ ignition system

He check limits, pressure switch first, made sure he was pushing 24 LV, then he checked power to gas valve, commented on inducer, is he suppose to start praying over it or something... perhaps a chanting session? He went upstream and started checking components that would affect the gas valve.
