STEP BY STEP HOW TO DO A BONDED CAR TITLE IN TEXAS

This video is the “New & Improved” sequel to my “How to do a bonded title” video. Based on all the questions that have been asked I’ve identified some points I need to make easier to understand as well as ad a resource or two.
1) You must be a Texas resident with a Texas address.
2) Your vehicle must be in your possession.
Here is a link to the TXDMV website to obtain the form “Request for Motor Vehicle Information” which would be good to do before you even buy the car.

There is no link for the 68-A vin inspection. This is done by law enforcement and they do not provide blank form. You will need to find an agency that completes these inspections. If you google your area and “auto theft task force” you will most likely find one. For me just east of Dallas it’s the East Texas Auto Theft task force in Tyler. There is a task force in DFW but they are about 2 months out at the time I’m recording this. Call around you should be able to find one. Most charge $40 for the inspection.

As for bonds you’ll want to call around. Usually the “Bond fee” most companies charge is as much or greater than the price of the bond. The guy I use is generally about half price. Unfortunately he’s asked me not to put his name out there as he doesn’t make much on the bonds and does them for me because I have all my insurances with him.

So I purchased a vehicle from a guy who purchased it from another guy who purchased it from the title owner but never transferred the title. I have the title but it was never transferred by the guy who initially bought it. I have sent a letter to the person listed as owner on the title to get their help. But I have not gotten correspondence back. So I'm going to have to get a bonded title it looks like.

Awesome video, I wish I had done some further research before jumping into my mess. Hopefully you can please assist. I flew into TX to purchase a salavge vehicle. The shipping company was there waiting for me when I got to the meeting point to bring the car to NC. The car works amazing and met my expectations however the title was a bit of a mess. On the back the top section is all filled out with who bought the car from the insurance company and then who they sold it to. Obviously my name wasn't in that section. According to the individual, he bout the car and was going to register it but then needed the money so decided to sell it instead. I now have the car and title in NC but not sure how to transfer and put the title in my name. Any insight into this would greatly be appreciated.

You would have to do some type of bonded title process there in NC. Once it's signed by someone it can't be "unsigned". You'll have to see what NC's process is.

What if the payday title company is no longer in existence: What is the best options to get a clear title. The lien release letter is also lost.

If they are out of business than there will be no one to contact the DMV and state that they have a valid lien. Your bond agent will need to verify they’re closed before he writes your bond. Thanks for watching.

hey man I bought this old gmc sierra off facebook and the title the guy gave me has a different vin on it then the truck so i can’t register it should i just try to get a bonded one with the real vin but also i called my local dmv and they said the vin on the title is for the truck and it was last registered in 2017 with the license plates that our on the truck but the real vin that’s on the truck they said it’s never been registered anywhere so i’m just wondering how the hell the guy even registered it in the first place because the inspection places put the vin that’s on your vehicle on the paper and that’s why i can’t register it

Who knows. He could have legitimately had two of the same model trucks. He coulda got screwed when he bought it. The inspection people coulda been lazy and typed the vin in off the insurance because they didn’t have a bar code reader to scan the vin. Hard saying. But you are correct you effectively have no title so you’re going to have to do a bonded title.

It’s very good but you didn’t mention the importance of a safety inspection. You will need that prior to registering the car, but it is not necessary to get the title. However if you plan to be using the vehicle in question as your transportation in this process you will need to get the car in question insured safety inspected and I believe the bill of sale to take to the regional office so you can get a temporary registration for 30 days so you can legally drive the car on the road to include getting the vin inspected if it’s an out of state vehicle. Also note there is a $25 late fee if you do not transfer a car into your name after purchase and saying I was waiting for my vin inspection date is not a legit reason

Question!! If I’m selling a vehicle that I own the bonded title for, the bond has 1yr left on it, do I need to provide the bond with the sale or just the title, VTR, and application for title/registration?

The dealership I bought the car from I have the title for the vehicle which was signed, but they did not signed a application for texas title and registration. Unfortunately they are out of business, do I need to do a bonded title in order to get the car in my name.

I'd start by taking what you have into your local tax office and seeing if they'll do it for you. As a dealer we are not supposed to send the customer with the title and hope they do the transfer - but since this dealer is already out of business you don't really have any recourse there. First go to the tax office and see if they'll do the transfer for you.

It's not necessary. I am a dealer, I get one every time. I recommend it on a "no title" car in the event it turns out to be stolen or something you have proof where you bought it.

You're still sending in a copy of your ID. You're going to have a Texas address on your forms and you're going to get a Texas registration you'll be fine.

Couldn't tell you for sure but if you've paid your car off I'd suspect the title will be along in a week or two. You probably could ask them rather than me for more accurate info.

Hi can you help me, I bought a used car off facebook marketplace but the dude was sketchy and ended up blocking and deleting his account. I ended up getting the clean title but the problem is the back of the title, The dealer bought it from an auction and didn’t make the transfer. I talked to places and they said I have to do a bonded title. I was able to pass inspection and get insurance on the car, but I need to register the car and get the stickers and license plates since my temporrary plates expire on april 2nd. I also have to get the title transferred as a bonded now. Can you give me a walkthrough of what I should do? Thanks

The walk through is to just follow that video I made. You have the paperwork from the dealership you bought it from I assume so that's your "proof" of ownership. Fill out the forms and send them in just like the video shows.

Does this process differ at all for a trailer? I have one that is over 4k GVWR and requires a title. Trying to figure this all out but it sure is a mess.

I don't do trailers but if it's a trailer that's big enough for a title I'm 99% sure it's the same process.

What if the vehicle was passed down to a family member with no title and I am buying it from this person. He will be the seller on the Bill of Sale?

Correct. He’s who you are buying it from just write a bill of sale with that person.

I'd imagine you could do that. I probably won't say it was left abandoned. I'd probably put the name of the previous person that lived there in as the person you bought it from and I'd put a price of a couple hundred bucks.

Can an individual use form VTR-275 or is this only for dealers? And if so, do you mark anything on the first page under "Record's Request" or just on the 2nd page under the "Use in normal course of business" line? Thanks for the help.

So kind of a gray area. It is technically for businesses in one of the listed fields. On rare occasion by selecting “use in normal course of business” the tax office might let you slide and provide the information. I have never had them ask for any proof of your business so purchase your initials and “enterprises” may get it done? Perhaps. Thanks for watching!

As long as you have the vin you’re good. Just write “none” on the vin.

Is there anything special that must be done when selling a vehicle that has a bonded title before that 3 year mark where I can remove the bond? I’m at the point of just needing to go to the county tax assessor for my first motorcycle. I’ll keep the bike until I’ve learned how to ride but will want to sell it so I can get a bike I really want.

Nothing special. The title will say bonded but there's nothing special you have to do.

So if an owner turns up later, you say you likely will have to pay. What determines your financial exposure in this case? How much is the exposure? Does that owner get the car back? Thanks for the video!

I have only had one go bad. It was a very unique situation. In this case the car was surrendered to the court and a hearing was held. The party that was the legal owner was asked if they wanted the bond money or the vehicle. They took the vehicle so my customer who bought the bonded title vehicle was able to get the bond money. I then had to pay the bond company what they paid out plus the difference between what the customer paid me and the bond to the customer so he was made whole. I have a video on that too. In most all the cases your bonded title would be denied before it was even issued if the legal owner came forward with a claim. I’ve done a couple hundred of these and only had a problem with the one. Check out that video when you get time. There is a “part 2” to that video coming soon, too.

How'd he take the loan out after he sold it to you? If it's a title loan he had to have the car and the title. He may have gotten a duplicate title and gotten the loan then sold the car to you with the other title. That's a downer.

@@buxtonautosales that's what he did. Sold me the car. And before I could put in my name, he got a lost duplicate and took it to the bank. Many banks will give a loan without physically seeing the vehicle

If you are a Texas resident and the vehicle is with you in Texas this procedure will work. Rewatch the video, it mentions the 68-A vin inspection which is the extra step you’ll need.

Hey what do you do if you bought the vehicle from a seller but they never put it in their name and messed up signing the title and cant find the original owner but i got a bill of sale and their id am i available to get it bonded please respond ASAP

Yeah, when that happens the only legal thing you can do is get a bonded title OR see if you can find the original seller (the guy who's name is on the front) and see if he will sign you a "Statement of Fact" and mark down that his original sale fell through and that he sold the vehicle to you.

That didn't help calling Regional DMV help me none I also heard I have to take it to the police station because it's from out of state what's going to happen to my car what are they going to do are they going to keep it or they able to keep it

I'm sorry I'm a bit confused what you're talking about. If it has never been registered in Texas yes you will need a 68A vin inspection done, which is mentioned in the video.

You can file a complaint with the State DMV and see if the State can "motivate" the dealer to complete the transaction. If they have gone out of business you have your paperwork from the dealership as your supporting documents and you'll actually have to do the bonded title process.

Just make a copy of both sides of the title and send that in with your application as your “proof of ownership” you’ll be fine.

I'm sorry, I thought I explained. Guess I better rewatch my own video. If there is a valid lien then you can not get a bonded title. When you go to the DMV they generate a letter to the registered owner and lienholder. That lienholder would then contact the DMV like the letter says to say that they still have an interest in the vehicle. Then, because they now have YOUR address from the letter they received from the DMV you can most likely expect to see a repo truck circling your house to get the car back.

Please help me I am disabled I totally got ripped off I bought an 05 Dodge Magnum RT with good amount of Miles not too high not too low pay tax title and license went to pick it all up he handed me the title said go to the DMV I get there it's a bonded title from out of Colorado now I'm stuck with a car that my disabled self had to save up for for 5 years to be able to afford and I get my dream car and I can't drive it please please help sincerely stupid man

I'm sorry I am confused what the question is? If you have a bonded Colorado title you should be able to go get your state inspection and then go to your tax office to transfer it into your name.

So if an online VIN search doesn't turn anything up and we're not sure if the vehicle has been registered in Texas before, the order of the steps would be: 1. Call the regional office and ask if they can confirm the vehicle has not been stolen/no liens on the vehicle 2. Submit the request for motor vehicle information 3. Get the VTR 68 A inspection out of the way if the vehicle IS from out of state (we'd learn this in steps 1 or 2?) 4. If steps 1-3 check out, then we'd submit the bonded title application with a copy of ID, bill of sale, and copy of insurance 5. Wait for them to send us the OK to proceed, then get the bond 6. Take the bond, all above docs, and the application for title form to the local tax assessor collector's office and get the title from there?

More or less. Some counties won’t accept the request for motor vehicle info if you aren’t a business. Some are. Just seems to depend. It is technically for businesses. If you call the dmv and there’s no recorded lien or if it’s from out of state I would t worry about it. Insurance is not required until you go to the county with the completed packet if you are getting tags. If you are only doing the title at that time you don’t need insurance yet.
