Nuts and Obesity: The Weight of Evidence

Nut consumption does not appear to lead to the expected weight gain. How is it possible given how many calories they have? Doesn't this violate some pesky law of the physical universe (the first law of thermodynamics)? That's the subject of Solving the Mystery of the Missing Calories (nutritionfacts.....
There definitely are foods linked to weight gain, see Does Eating Obesity Cause Obesity? (nutritionfacts....) and Waistline-Expanding Food (nutritionfacts....) for example.
I give a summary of obesity in the diabetes section of my full-length Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death (nutritionfacts....) as well.
For more insight from the Harvard Nurses Health Study see What Women Should Eat to Live Longer (nutritionfacts...., Skim Milk and Acne (nutritionfacts...., Harvard's Meat and Mortality Studies (nutritionfacts...., and Meat Hormones Female Infertility (nutritionfacts.....
Note: Note: I updated the video on August 25, 2012. I am indebted to Jeff Nelson (vegsource.com) for pointing out my mischaracterization of the 2007 Natoli & McCoy review (apjcn.nhri.org..... I've not only corrected the video, but expanded it (by 8 minutes!) to cover all of the studies published in the 5 years since. The evidence is stronger than ever that the consumption of nuts does not lead to the weight gain one would expect.

This video is talking about bad meats, good nuts, veggies, etc. Then their are vegans that don't eat oil at all. So the junk food people, and the meat eaters and the non oil vegans hate this because it disproves their diet/lifestyle.The bottom line in the video explains the study, no one wants to listen because they are passionate about their food beliefs. Calorie counters don't like this either because they like their candy/ junk food and justify it as lower calorie, but the nutrients in nuts are overall better as a snack AND a meat replacement, as this man is trying to prove. No one wants to change their eating habits, they just want to troll people who give them info they don't want to hear and instantly give the guy a hard time. Sad.

@RundellMR
@RundellMR 7 лет назад
I disagree that "non oil vegans hate this" because they have nothing against eating whole foods that contain oil, such as avocados, olives, corn, nuts and seeds. "No oil" refers to avoiding consuming the oil that has been extracted and separated from those foods so you are only consuming only the fat and none of the other nutrients contained in the whole food.

+Alan Heath That is hilarious! This is guy is a lunatic! I just watched another of his videos on "how chicken makes you fat." Obviously, he is either dumb, deceived....or both. In my "real world" experience...every time I indulge in snacking on nuts...I gain a LOT of weight! (Maybe be a potion control problem). I realize that a SMALL...(very small)...portion of nuts in the diet...is good. Anyway...report back on your pistachio nut experiment!
@joeschmo5699
@joeschmo5699 8 лет назад
+Alan Heath What do you mean "it works?" All this means is that all calories are not created equal, despite the insistence of the establishment and coattail-riders who suck up to the establishment and think the energy balance model is a meaningful thing. I guarantee you a similar thing can happen when you add other nutrition dense foods to the diet, such as fat or quality protein, and leafy vegetables and low sugar fruits. But, nuts are a much easier unit to quantify and add to a diet as a separate entity.

For years I have eaten insane amounts of (mostly raw)nuts and seeds. Handfuls of them, spoonfuls of butter out of the jar, multiple times a day... I’ve tried to reduce my nut intake for fear of gaining but I love them so much. My weight is pretty normal. I’m 5’4, 110 lbs. I’m glad I watched this.

At 5'4" and 110 pounds, your weight isn't just "pretty normal," Diedra, you're slim. 110 pounds is considered slim for someone even 5'2". So excellent news about the nuts not affecting that. I just hope you are eating raw nuts so you're getting the best of everything nuts have to offer!

My personal theory is that nuts reduce fat cravings by loading you up with essential fatty acids, breaking the cycle where the body keeps indiscriminately demanding fats only to notice later that none of the acids were the essential ones it really needed, leading to renewed fat cravings. The cycle stops when you give the body what it was really looking for.

I have found that I can eat an incredible amount of raw sprouted walnuts of fresh cashews without any weight gain issues. When I say incredible I am talking up to 9 pounds a month. I have since cut back but still eat a significant amount. I also think there is something going on with how much of the nuts are actuality digested. I don't think we can count the full amount of calories when eating them. Chewing does not break them down all the way and many small pieces pass through undigested. I would be willing to bet that 1/3 of the nuts are not digested. I would also be willing to bet that nut butters would cause more weight gain

Peanuts are legumes. And very moldy ones at that. In fact organic, less processed peanuts have the highest amount of aflatoxin. Not to mention high temperature roasting oxidizes the fats. They are also high histamine foods. Peanuts are terrible for health. Try walnut butter. Raw sprouted walnut butter. You can thank me later ;)

In the past few weeks I've decided to add a some nuts back into my diet, when I read that nuts can decrease a persons risk of death! (You can find that study at the Harvard gazette website.) I also figured I needed a bit more vitamin E and selenium in my diet, so I picked brazil nuts. I'm HCLF vegan but it hasn't helped my acne, even though they all say nuts and higher fat foods hurt your skin. Well I gave it a chance, figuring I'd gain a little weight but it would be worth it for the nutrition. And guess what? NO WEIGHT GAIN. At all. And also, no issues with more acne (any more than normal, I mean). :) So happy!

I did see that research, however it was in search of what was missing due to my fibromyalgia. So i'm deficient in this area i'm guessing.... and i can't eat fish, or have iodine, so i have to find other ways for vitamins. It must be doing something cause i'm completely off all prescription and over the counter pain meds, I had surgery not long ago, and possibly have concern over cancer... however i am doing everything natural and recently fell getting a bad huge bruise, which healed in a week... i've never healed like that. So Good Nutrition can make a difference. Of course all we can do is pray what were doing is right.. it's not easy or fool proof. I was making strong improvements till a dumb doctor gave me a vaccine which landed me in the hospital nearly dying. If it wasn't for my strong belief in natural herbs and vitamins who knows how it would have cleared from my body.... it took over 6 months of h*ll to get back some normalcy and even then i have moments -issues from this damage. They keep trying to kill me, but should be studying why i'm still alive...lol.

I understood that from the start you ignorant fucktard. My point is that the fat in these nuts are combined with various other constituents(like fiber, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals aka it's a whole food), which help metabolize the fat and prevent the high amount of calories from being stored as fat. Whereas if you consumed pure olive oil or sugar, that would likely lead to statistically significant weight gain. The only idiot here for not realizing what I was referring to is you.

Just more evidence that proves you literally can't eat too much of a whole food plant based diet. In fact, judging by the dose dependent factor of efficacy, it's more accurate to say you can't eat ENOUGH of a WFPB diet

I tried to bulk using nut by adding 2000cal extra a day for 2 weeks and nothing happened. But my strength went up tho.

This is crazy! I had no idea about this, and in the summer this past year I was habitually eating (what i later calculated to be) approx, 3000 calories on average per DAY from nuts alone. Like we aren't talking only 1 or 2 handfuls. I just really liked nuts. and I noticed NO significant weight gain (a little bit, but nothing crazy.. after a week or so of not eating nuts I would look totally 'normal' again which causes me to believe it was from the extra sodium - i like my nuts salted). I do work out quite a bit, and am a fairly fit person, but you would still think at that amount something would happen... I am also vegan, so most other foods I eat are calorically quite low. I actually stopped eating them as much, because I figured there would eventually be inevitable weight gain. But looks like I'll be going back to my old ways! Thanks for the video!

So what happens when you DO restrict calories AND add the nuts? I'm currently lifting weights and I'm in a cutting phase, I've reduced the amount of nuts I eat in a day (10 grams of almonds) but being such a fan of them, I would seriously love to add more without sacrificing the weight loss and definition I seek.

Does this apply to eating 'as is' or is it best to soak/sprout? I eat organic/raw and soak a few handfuls to add to greek yougurt/berries but what about an evening snack-attack? Just eat 'as-is'? Phytic acid?

I stopped all nuts and oils, and lost 23 pounds in three weeks. I was eating about 6 or 8 handfuls, maybe more of nuts, snacking throughout the day, using them in my vegan dishes. Walnut burgers 🍔 are amazing. Now count them, 2 macadamia nuts, a few pecans, no almonds yet Weight still off. YAY 🕺 🕺 🕺

(I might have made this comment below somewhere). It could be that nuts contain mitochondrial 'uncoupling' compounds -- uncoupling calories burned from ATP produced. Instead the calories are converted to heat. This extra heat production would essentially increase one's basal metabolic rate (BMR) and calorie expenditure. Maybe squirrels find this a convenient way to keep warm in winter. Such an uncoupling agent has been isolated from cashews.

at the end of the video he said could be the aminoacid arginine or the flavonoids. But in the point he is missing is that this nuts are very low in carbs so you dont produce to much insulin eating this nuts alone so you can not gain weight without insulin

jessica zhang Not really. The cheese fills you up, and your body doesn't metabolize fats the same as carbs. Obviously, you can gain weight eating excessive amounts of anything, which as a generalization, fats don't cause weight gain.

***** Cheese is made from milk and bacteria (primarily, plus salt and a few other natural ingredients). There are no scientific studies linking cheese consumption to rotted arteries. I'm sure in large enough quantities it would kill you, but the same is true of water and oxygen.

I actually didn't like nutritionfact.org, because I'm a keto advocate, however after looking deeper in nutrition keto and vegan both work, because the most problems are not exactly fats or carbs, but the mix of them causes problems, and also the proccessing of any - carb or fat makes it food for your fat stores and not your body. Also great review for nuts :) I was concerned about overeating them, however I always checked that my weight stayed the same. It was quite a surprise, so these studies assured me, everything is fine.

One assumption that seems to be at work often in these types of studies and society is that you don't absorb everything that you eat. Unless you liquify the nuts into a butter a lot is likely to just be pooped out.

Autumn Roma " The seed is surrounded by a double shell containing an allergenic phenolic resin, anacardic acid, a potent skin irritant chemically related to the better-known allergenic oil urushiol which is also a toxin found in the related poison ivy. Properly roasting cashews destroys the toxin, but it must be done outdoors as the smoke (not unlike that from burning poison ivy) contains urushiol droplets which can cause severe, sometimes life-threatening, reactions by irritating the lungs." - Wikipedia.. Apparently there are people that split the shells open by hand, without getting the toxin on the nut and these don't need to be steamed, but it sounds risky to me. FYI Most nuts labelled raw use the steam method to remove the shells.

Finally this guy must have gotten a speech coach, to help improve his style of speaking! Yay! Because, while he has some good information to impart, it has been painful to listen to him speak, in previous presentations. This was much easier to listen to! A fixed amount of (insert a food here), given to different body sized, different metabolisms, etc., will have different responses. Do the so-called studies done, factor that? Did this doctor mostly read the research summaries, or did he dig into the bodies of the studies, to better determine the veracity & accuracy of how research was set up, done, and assessed? Or look at WHO really FUNDED it? He talks about single foods, and mentioned how sugar is worst, but only cursorily mention of how combining sugars with near fiberless grains screws health. Just curious. I kinda like one doc’s advice: “eat food; not too much; mostly fresh veggies”. I’d add: “mostly organic” & “intermittent fasting”.

'Nutrient densty' and 'calories' are not the same thing, shouldn't even be compared or used in the same sentince... Caliries is a measurement of 'junk food'. 'Nutrient dense foods' discribe real food, propper for humans where calories don't count. It's difderent terminologies.
