We only got one Paladin in oath in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, the Oath of the Watchers. This paladin oath is all about fending off strange extraplanar creatures but for some reason it just doesn't really interest me.

This subclass gave me a hilarious mental image of a Paladin with a mount from Find Steed using Abjure the Extraplanar and then his mount proceeds to book it in the opposite direction.

Augury grants you an omen from an otherworldly entity, so casting it would be against the tenents of the oath, hence the spell being replace with see invisibility. Moonbeam is on the spell list due to its ability to reveal shapechangers.

I like the idea of a faction of Paladins that watches for aberrations or other extraplanar monsters finding their way into the material world, but I do think the Horizon Walker ranger is a bit more of a buff with its ability to detect portals and do extra force damage on all their attacks. I guess Paladin subclasses don’t really get to buff Paladin too much cause it’s base subclass is already pretty powerful.

I think both of them synergize pretty well working together. Like, one is tracking where the extraplanar came from and the other is more for protection of the innocents. Kinda cool in that way.

Paladin has probably the strongest and well rounded core class kit in this game, so you cant give them completly overpowered subclass mecanics. (Second being Sorcerer for metamagic+spell or Bard for everything they get) Ranger is the weakest class, so giving ranger a lot of power from subclass is a duty. The only drawback with this game balance is strong core kit class will probably feel the same (every paladin feels like a paladin), but weak kit class will feel very different, but with one or more option that completly surclass the other, or option that are just plain bad (Monk with Elemental, Ranger with beast master, kinda happens with some wizard subclasses)

@@gamecavalier3230 I would argue it depend on which Ranger you play because there are like 3 or 4 rangers UA ranger is cool, but PHB ranger has really nothing for him at all exept mobility and some spell. Read the PHB, most of the core kit feature is terrain based, and prettt munch useless. And they dont have that many spell Monk can do some damage and can actually stun a threat for multiple turn, got all saving throw proficiency, and got one of the best skill : evade. They are pretty munch immune to dec based spell and very durable against regular spell at higher level. Their only real problem is they cant really do damage because they dont have access to Great Weapon Master or magic item, or damage boosting feature and they are stuck with only two attacks. (Without wasting ki point) No really, PHB ranger got nothing for them. Im talking core kit, without subclasses.

The oath of the watchers, I’m pretty sure, is a reference to the Abyss Watchers from Dark Souls, as they were knights who took an oath to protect the world from the aberrations of the abyss.

I actually like them giving see invisibility as an auto-prepare, as it rarely gets used otherwise, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the usage on the Star Razor on CriticalRole.

Watchers sounds like a call back to Game of Throne. Protecting Westeros from supernatural beings. "The watchers on the wall." They also make a Oath, not a magical based fighter but it's still reminiscent.

Love this subclass for it's flavour personally. It fits well with a "Abyss Watcher" themed character, which I am playing in one of my friend's campaigns.

I think going with proficency bonus as the determining factor for all those abilities was very strategic. Now those abilities are hard-set to character level, so they progress much more predictably and consistently. This also encourages characters to take feats more often since a significant reason to boost your stats was removed. This was probably more for power balance as it level locks these features.

It's looking like the deciding factor in Proficiency vs ability score is whether or not the score in question would be the one the class would put the highest score in right away. Charisma is important for paladins, but its second behind strength and maybe third behind constitution.

Interestingly, this is one of the only three paladins that don't have to use their full action for the level 20 transformation. The Oath of Glory also uses a bonus action to transform, and the Oath of Redemption is always on until you harm someone. It's nice, since I always thought that the transformations taking your whole turn was a bit clunky.

It's a really flavorful subclass, but again it seems that WotC is afraid of Auras, Watchers Will would be way better as an aura, anyway, delete machine go brrrrr.

vigilant rebuke was nerfed too hard imo. It was all around good until the changes now its pretty meh except for specific circumstances. I thought much of the criticism for the class was it was too niche and they push it further into a corner...

When i first read the Psi-Warrior, i thought Jedi Knight. When i read up on the Watchers, my impression was the Wardens from Dresden Files. Sort of, vaguely. Grey blood-spatter-proof cloaks should be a common item for their order to hand out.

I'm still kinda mad we don't get official support for ranged smites Maybe not for bows and stuff, but for daggers and tridents and stuff, which is how we've been playing The way we've been rulling it is that if the weapon has the thrown propperty, you can use a smite on a ranged attack with it it, but not for other ranged attacks

Heh oath of watchers plus swashbuckler plus alert (I think it’s the initiative buff) plus max dex and charisma is 5+5+5+6 so the min you can roll is 22 XD

I like the idea for paladins to get back their capstone with 5th level spell slot. Not sure if Redemption would be the only one who would not gain anything from that as their capstone power is on all the time.

About the flavour: I think they're like blood hunters in many regards, but without the whole edgy element. I actually dig an idea of a knighty order, who monitors all extraplanar influences, celestial included, so those stuck up with their extreme rigid code angels won't use mortals in their holy wars. They feel a bit similar to Deathwatch space marine chapter from Warhammer 40k, and now I actually want to build one, using the Deathwatch visuals

My thoughts... Channel Divinity: Both options are good and thematic, having advantage on your mental saves is always going to be useful, and an extra-planer turning can save a party more often then not. Aura of the Sentinel: Initiative bonuses are always good, slapping it on a paladin's aura is even better. Vigilant Rebuke: It's a mage slayer ability, and I appreciate that we have something that can do that archetype well without needing to multiclass. Mortal Bulwark: Truesight, advantage against extra planer creatures, and a built in banishing smite, plus you can use it up to 3 times per day. Final thoughts: This is a fun, and powerful, subclass that is perfect for anyone who wants to play a mageslayer but didn't want to multiclass, and I'm already working on one for me.

Modifier vs proficiency is case-by-case. Proficiency is used to balance progression (whenever a +4 or +5 would make an ability too strong at early levels). I support this shift as it allows for more range and flexibility in design.

For the aura of the sentinel, I don’t think it removes the dex mod on initiative. All it says is you “gain a bonus equal to your proficiency bonus”. So it would be 10+ dex mod + proficiency bonus, right?

Oath of the watcher paladin, swashbuckler rogue, gloomstalker ranger, and war wizard. Full high initiative strike team. Whole party has ridiculous initiative. The power of going before your enemies is ridiculous. The average combat is 3 rounds, and high initiative basically gives the chance for an “extra” turn by going before your enemies. Each 1 bonus to initiative to a a 5% chance to get a turn first, which increases your damage by 33%. 4 to your enemies vs 3, instead of the other way around. This equates to a roughly 1.65% increase in expected damage per 1 point of initiative bonus, regardless of how you approach combat. Only caveat is dexterity based damage further benefits.

I'm very interesting in playing a Paladin at some point and especially this subclass. I have some personal reasons for this and I'm curious to see how it plays out. The 20th level ability for constant advantage seems a bit late in the game. Although that is a trend, it seems, with Paladins and being VERY delayed gratification sadly. I like how this class is planned out and provided the DM gives plenty of extraplanar creatures to fight in combat. This Paladin could be a great deal of fun to play. I'm looking forward to it although I'm very interesting in playing the homebrewed Oath of Brotherhood first.

Regarding the 20th level feature using a 5th level spell slot to recharge. Not all features are equal so some might be too powerful if they could recharge using a 5th level spell slot. Just a thought as to why not all subclasses are uniform

About what you said about the WotC waiting for the next printing to release the errata to avoid confusion, it's not make complete sense. If two players in the same group has one with the non errata version and the other has one with the errata? It would be confusing as having the errata early on internet.

Hey Ted! I don't know about you, but comparing the UA version to the TCoE version, I would rather keep Chromatic Orb instead of Detect Magic, I can always take detect magic if I need it, and I would rather keep Hallow and Scrying. IIRC unless I'm mistaken, Hold Monster doesn't work on Undead, which my DM tends to throw at my group the most.

I've been saying for a while it feels to Eberron Druids what Ancients is to more traditional Druids, something that's somewhat thematically aligned (though by no means 1:1) that wouldn't look out of place as the heavy hitter of a circle of them

I inspired a city in one of my contents in world based off of these paladins. The whole idea is that this temple was split into two parts:one part of the temple is clerics, paladins, and monks the other part is Eldritch knights, warlock’s and wizards. Each section has a responsibility to protect different aspects of the content in which they are located in. Wizards and clerics protect the content from extra planer attacks, Monks root out corruption in the cities, knights are guards for the city and paladins fill the gaps.

Uses should scale with Proficiency, but the benefits should be Modifier. The idea should be as you grow in level you can use something more often due to becoming more experienced or proficient at doing it, but if you have a lower Modifier it should be a weaker effect.

I would actually argue that scrying is a really bad spell for Paladins. Being a half-caster, by the time they get access to scrying you’ve likely had someone in the party who has been able to scry for the last 8 levels and can now do it up to 6 times. It’s a great spell, but hallow makes more sense for what this particular oath is going for and it’s not something a half-caster is going to get that much use out of, especially one who wants to keep those level of slots for bigass smites.

I'd definitely allow other paladins to transform again as a level 20 ability. If you've made it to level 20 legit you deserve to sploosh, and get amazing abilities for sticking to a class till the very end.

You could use spell points to get more of the transformation feature, but you’d give up a lot of smites.

I hate that they slap proficiency bonus everywhere where its not needed as well. It takes away from that good feeling of having that high of a stat and being powerful early on. Sure at 17 its a +6 but often the earlier levels it matters far more.

I think that is on purpose, since many tables now roll for stats and often can start with a +4 or even +5 capped stat at lvl1 so there's no progression and can be alittle nutty at low lvls.

I think it would be neat if the make a paladin themed around the "blessed warrior" theming it as lv 3 channel abilities calling on your god as the clerics have the roll 1d100 one, or having an aoe lay on hands that the amount you spent every friendly ceature recives that amount, with a range scales with your aura With oath spells about keeping your team alive but not necessarily pure healing but spells such as bless, aid, absorb elements, etc. With the last 2 giving them spells like spirit guardian An aura that gives people a passive bless, An ability that give them immunity to anti magic called the radiant gift and for all in their aura so that their blessive gifts will not be silences, With the lv Capt abilities calling them the blessive soul with celestial like wings flowing through your back giving a fly speed of your movement speed, adv on all saves with, resistance to all damage and a passive healing to all allies within your aura =to half your lv that last up to an hour

@@TheZandaz any paladin is a potential death sentence to the combat phase in DiA. Smite is NUTS vs fiends, especially in conjunction with polearm mastery, our DM has thrown much scarier creatures than they're supposed to, but they still are obliterated via Smites

anybody else feel the oath of watchers is almost too powerful for a paladin subclass it takes a basic class thats already good against these sorts of threats and basically gives it expertise in everything needed to take on outsiders

Prof bonus scaling is kinda lame. I dont like how if i build my character well amd put my stats into charisma, someone who didnt is just as good. Why would someone with 3 cha give the same thing as someone with 20 cha?

Why would a lv1 character with 18 Cha have the same thing as a lv17 character with 18 Cha? Every schaling has it's problems.

@@i.cs.zamodits because you have 18 charisma. You invested your ability score into that, you should be rewarded. And in flavor you should be better at something if all your power draws from that thing. Its also always worked. I agree with Ted that its odd that a lot of things were turned into prof bonus, but many were not.

I like it as a way to not be so dependent on your ability scores, if you roll for stats and get low ones or just want to play an intelligent Paladin or have some other reason for low stats, this scaling helps you stay viable as the game progresses. On the other hand, it doesn't reward high stat builds and it makes multiclassing more powerful which I don't particularly like. Multiclassing should be a way to trade power for versatility.

I'm not displeased by some class using proficient bonus over ability modifier. Yeah a adventurer with 20 on the attribute should be better than one with 16, but a high level adventurer should be better than one on the firsts levels. It's all natural talent vs. trained talent, who is better and why?

the lack of consistency w/ the mods vs prof is bugging the crap out of me as well. I was feeling pretty good still until i seen the change to vigilant rebuke, that change is a major nerf because monster abilities that create spell-like effects are essentially spells with a few exceptions like a dragons breath, Mind blast is a spell the way I understand psionics. Limiting it to only the mental stats and adding the stipulation they must make the save is a slap in the face. hope you save that channel because if you want to use this ability because you'll need it for sure. The class was already leaning towards too niche and the change to vigilant rebuke was the final nail. The capstone is mostly useless outside of some specific circumstances, usually you get something universally useful but not here, i guess they offer it for a cost 5th level spell because true sight? The only saving grace for me (I'm playing one in the rhyme of the frostmaiden) is that this campaign wont see 15-20 if it was I would multiclass out prolly to divine soul or celestial pact warlock.

@sum body can you give me some examples ? Like I said psionics and magic are the same thing according to Wotc. it's so much better when? In that one niche campaign? At least UA version had some general usefulness.

So since fey are in all the lists it would affect non humanoid Playerraces aka Satyr and Centaur players. So having this class could lead to some "Racism" issues which need to be handled.

@sum body I didnt say that DND is racist. I only think that the watchers abilities can be used in an adverse way against the Nonhumanoid races. The possibility of that abuse should be adressed in some way. DND is not racists but players can. Also nice gatekeeping.
