THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I install the coamings on the aft deck. I also show work I completed to install the last remaining cabin sole panel, the mainsheet cam cleat mount, and a system to secure my stowable sink. Next video we will be moving on to installing the deck!

Any good recommendations for additions to my deck or things to consider while building the deck? Please leave a comment about it. Also still thinking about what kind of hatch to build for my deck locker so let me know if you have any brilliant recommendations. 🍍Thank you for watching! 🤩 Support OCSS Through Patreon! www.patreon.com/oceancapablesmallsailboat Members watch 1 day early!

My Yamaha 25 had a hatch cover that served as a space to run all the lines aft. It also functioned as a dorade box and it kept the deck clean for walking. I like the deck clean as possible with cleats outboard.

That's good logic. I agree.

Well Capn' Perry, I haven't been watching for a while. No offense but after moving back to the US from Thailand, starting a new job and the best if all, after aquiring my new/old Balboa 26' I have been extremely busy. I just finally got the boat moved to my house last week and am currently gutting it in preparation to cut the decks and cabin top off of it to do a redesign. But you got my attention with finally being at a stage where you are going to close that boat up and put the decks in. I really can't wait to see it and I applaud your stick-to-it-iveness! Please 🙏🏽 for me as I am just beginning my own hallucination of what a perfect boat might look like.

That's quite an adventurous year. It would be great to live in Thailand. Good luck on the rebuild, that will be quite a challenge!

Not sure if this has come up. I think I understand that you will spend most time in the cabin, but I would suggest a strong attachment point on the deck for a harness for times when you must attend to something on deck and conditions are sketchy.

When you started to test the capacity of your deck locker and grabbed bumpers, I was reminded of a recent video from another YT'er . They were at a show and a gentleman was demonstrating blowup bumpers for your boat. For longer passages, they can be deflated and stored flat or I think rolled. In 14 ft. space is at a premium. I would love to see plans available for your boat. All the best, Hal

That does sound cool. Although I bet it would end up being too much trouble inflating/deflating for each use. I actually was thinking of strapping them up on deck securely to some tie-down points along the starboard side of the deck. My thinking is if the boat turned over in a storm, the buoyancy of the fenders would help get the boat rolling to right side up faster.

Yes, Duckworks in Port Townsend, WA makes some nice, rugged beach rollers that are quickly inflatable (about 5 minutes total prep time with about 1-2 minutes of pumping, with their little double action hand pump and some practice) and easily stowable as they roll-up lengthwise. They're 9" diameter and 5' long, inflated, and capable of bearing 2k lbs. of compression each on sandy/pebble shorelines. They deflate and roll up into a 14"x7" lumpy cylinder...not sure that you're interested in a quick beach haul out (might be tricky with your keel set-up) but very user-friendly and quickly inflate/deflatable in my experience so far. I used them this last summer as stowable fenders, and alternatively floats for having fun, but could make some substantial added buoyancy in a pinch for a boat your size). A bit pricey for sure, but they look and feel like they'll put up with a lot of use, just keep your fillet knife away ; ) My recommendation if you do happen to go this way is to replace the little hose the pump comes with, with something more substantial. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Not drinking Cutty Sark scotch I hope? I recognize your profile image from that bottle. I bought it once and didn't love it. But I'm more of a bourbon or rum drinker 😃

Sadly enough, yeah, I was drinking Cutty Sark. A liter is incredibly cheap here in Taiwan. But I promise to buy a nicer bottle when you launch. Aside, though, did you know that "Cutty Sark" literally means a short woman's night dress? Basically, underwear. AWESOME ship's name.

@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 7 месяцев назад
Maybe once I'm done. I'm not sure if it matters much. The cost is quite high and will vary widely by location/country. I didn't bother to predict the costs (I don't think I would be able to with any accuracy,) but I did save up a good fund for the build before ever starting.

The design and construction techniques are fascinating. I'm curious why you chose 14 feet length and a scow bow. I did not find this info in the beginning episodes or the lats ones. Is 14 ft the longest length in California that does not require registration? Is the scow bow to optimize interior space? Thank you.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
OCSS-006 is all about the scow bow choice. 14' allows me to build this boat in my garage and still be able to fit my car inside. Also it's the same length as the boat Baluchon which largely inspired this boat. Small boats, small problems.
@jepomer

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat = I forgot that episode. Just finished watching it again with your design discussion - the length limited by available garage space!

Work is progressing well. I have one question for you. You plan to furl your sail like for baluchon. But is the mast you bought circular.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
Yes. Though I decided that one is far too heavy so I'm going to build another circular one from carbon fiber.

It's amazing to me, it's becoming real to me that the amount of major panels I need to make is swiftly running out! I'd like to launch in August but just to warn you I set a launch date goal of THIS month back in Jan 2023 so... 😅😅😅.
