CX-50 2.5 TURBO MERIDIAN EDITION
Produced at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) plant in Huntsville, Alabama, the Mazda CX-50 is a rugged and capable crossover SUV designed to complement the active lifestyles of customers in the North American market. Building off the standard Mazda CX-50 2.5 Turbo model and all the features equipped with it, the Meridian Edition package expands the vehicle's capabilities by providing outdoor-focused black metallic 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/60/18 all-terrain Falken Tires designed to take on challenging terrain while still feeling at home on the road. Aesthetically, the Meridian Edition is purposely designed to stand out and provide thoughtful outdoor utility. All-new headlight garnish, unique Meridian Edition-branded matte black hood graphic, black wheel locks and lug nuts, and side rocker panels help protect the CX-50 from outside elements while maintaining the vehicle's rugged appeal. Meridian Edition is exclusively offered in Polymetal Gray or Zircon Sand exterior paint, while the interior is only available in the new Terracotta leather with black interior accents.
All Meridian Edition vehicles are equipped with Mazda's standard i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD) system, Skyactiv-G 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium 93 octane fuel, or 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular 87 octane fuel, and a responsive Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Meridian Edition also comes equipped with Mazda's Mi-Drive, that includes Normal, Sport, Off-Road, and Towing driving modes. In Towing Mode, when equipped with a Genuine Mazda Tow Hitch, it is capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs.

One video from Matt’s Towing Recovery can reveal that there is nothing “off-road” in these urban class CUVs. They all become useless the moment they leave the expensive suburban road.

I like the style, and tires can make a big difference. But you've got to really value both off/rough road performance and interior quality for the (suspected) on-road hit of the Meridian edition. But if they market it the right way here in the NE I could see a few folks going for it purely to stand out over the endless Subaru up here. We see wilderness editions everywhere, and this is in that vein.

@@isakyhadz Fuel economy, road noise, handling. Tires that are better for off road conditions don't perform as well on road.

It should be interesting how the Meridian edition with its 18" wheels/tires compares to the 20" wheel/tires on the other turbo models when driven off road. It would also be interesting to see how the non-turbo models with the 17" wheels/tires perform off road as well. Another question is this: Why does the turbo CX-50 have a towing capacity of 3500 lbs, while the turbo CX-5, which has the same drive train, is only rated for 2000 lbs towing (same as the non-turbo CX-5/CX-50)?

Maximum tow rating is often primarily dependent on the structure of the vehicle, rather than the power train. The CX-50's newer platform should be better engineered to handle the strain of towing compared to the older CX-5. The aforementioned towing mode can also make a meaningful impact.

Plus one to the frame comment. Also could be cooling setup. Transmissions heat up pretty quickly from towing. Even though it has the same innards they aren't configured exactly the same. They developed the CX-50 from the start knowing it would fit the 2.5 turbo, whereas the CX-5 still has bones from pre-turbo days. Even if the intercooler parts are the same anything like a fan positioned differently or a grill design or undercarriage air flow can impact cooling. Similarly, of you look at the tightly packed nest of tubes under the hood of the Mazda3 Turbo, you can see why there's 0 towing recommended there, even if you could make it work.

Someone mentioned the Subaru Wilderness... it (Wilderness Outback) is not just looks package, there are bits that are functionally different (suspension, lift, revised final drive, bumpers, embossed seats, etc...) than the other models in the range. I had thought (evidently REALLY wrongly) that the Meridian was supposed to be the top trim, but it's really just a base Turbo with what appears to only be a $2700 looks package (decal, rocker garnish, headlight garnish, and SMALLER 18" wheels with offroad tires). Sorry, I *really* don't think that $2700 is worth it for just that stuff. Now... if they said it has a different off-road suspension (like the wilderness), I'd be akin to accepting the price tag, but details aren't anywhere that it's different. No way am I running 245/45-20s up here on New England roads... a recipe for continual alignments and dented wheels (like on my Subaru Impreza with 225/40-18s). Need more sidewall. I could spec out tires for a sport and 18" wheels from TR for $2k or under and sell the sport takeoffs without losing much money and still could look the part. Thing is, I don't want a gussied up base sport, either. So... a swing and a big miss by mazda. And to drive that point home, CX50 Meridian vs Palisade XRT.... same price. Palisade beats it in every metric, not to mention just being much bigger/interior space, can seat 7, for same price. That's going to leave a mark. Sure, some people like the smaller vehicle. That's OK. I do to, but just looking outside in solely at the value proposition? I know the Palisade may be in my future (and I don't need all that room).

It's made in the same plant as the Corolla Cross. They both use the same paint process from Mazda

I want to know if the Meridian edition really is an off-road package of its just a glorified appearance package? Does it have increased ground clearance? Skid plates? Anything different about the tuning? Anything that actually makes it “off-road” and a competitor to the Forester Wilderness?

It's the black trim surrounding the headlight assembly. Only the Meridian has it.

I'm planning on getting a new vehicle Thinking on a Mazda CX-50 (2023-2022) But also I like the Honda HR-V touring (2023), Audi Q3 dynamic (2022), the Hyundai Tucson (2023), Mazda CX-5 (2023), and the disadvantages

Mazda is confusing. I thought the CX-50 was already supposed to be the adventurous version of the CX-5. Also, I keep hearing Mazda is positioning itself to be in the luxury category but the CX-50 doesn’t seem to be a luxury vehicle.

The cx 5 is the luxury model. The cx 50 has leather seats and amenities like the cx 5, but is marketed as a adventurous off road model (for the family who goes camping or does outdoor things like canoeing.) The cx 50 has 10 trim levels, starting from the S Select, S Preferred, S Preferred Plus, S Premium, S Premium Plus, Turbo, Turbo Premium, Turbo Meridian, and the top Turbo Premium Plus. Most dealerships have preferred and above. What separates the variants is the first 6 below the Turbo have the standard engine that produces 189hp and 186ft pounds of torque. The Turbo lineup has the 227hp 310ft lbs of torque (if fed regular 87 octane fuel) or 256 hp 320lb of torque (if fed 93 octane fuel). Towing capacity is 2000 for the non turbo and 3500 for the Turbo models. The meridian is the only model that has 18" wheels with some beefy tires, while the base up to preferred have 17" wheels with all season tires. The rest of the lineup gets the 20" wheels. Mazda, is trying to win all the Subaru and toyota rav4 customers with this one. While it is no jeep true off reader, you can still do some light off-roading. All models from the base to the top Turbo Premium plus have AWD standard. It's the confusing trim levels that set this apart. But most people want choices, and have specific needs, so mazda listened. There's a model for you. While 90% of the market will buy this to go around town or the highway and will (or dont) do any off roading at all, this vehicle will get you where you want to go. It has the luxury amenities of the cx 5, is probably a bit more roomy in the back for three adults, and can carry bags or whatever you want inside. The cx5, though shorter in length, is a bit taller for those who are above 6ft, but was not designed for any offroading.

Love the looks but can’t justify the bit too high price. I’ll keep my 08 300hp MDX with it’s 18” wheels and truck tires that can kick some dirt road ass.

I have only had the Acura three years and the 02 pathfinder before it four years. After having five wrecked family vehicles and putting two kids through college in that decade span it changes your prospective on a new car purchase. However if the CX-50 had the straight six with a plug-in, it would move to the top of the list.
