Oil change on a BMW E38 740i (ASMR style) 

It doesnt work like that, when the cap isnt on the oil will simply drain back into the sump. It's not like a regular twist on filter.

@@lucase3047No .. No .. There is non return valve at the bottom of the outer side of the housing let the oil be fed from the oil pump in one direction and protect the oil from return to the pump. After the oil has been pressurized to the outer side of the housing and the outer side is full, the oil penetrate through the oil filter element and passes through the pipe in the middle of the housing to the engine to lubricate the moving parts (crankshaft bearing) then the oil will drop to the oil sump .. that is the circulation of the oil in the fillter housing. We fill the out side part of the housing and the oil will not drop to the oil sump due to non returned valve. We do that mainly to accelerate the filling of the outer side of the housing then the oil pass through the middle pipe of the housing to the crankshaft bearing very fast to reduce wearing in first start after changing oil filter... hope this makes better understanding of the oil circulation in e38.

@@nadirsaadabi286 This non return valve is open when the housing is open. Otherwise you would fill it up there and the oil would stay. What you are saying is simply incorrect. You can not just fill only the outside part. The only thing you can do, is put the filter in there, then add oil untill a certain point and wait a a minute untill the filter absorbs the first part, then add oil till you can and quicky add the cover. wipe off excess.

There will be pressure, as the oil pump is in the sump, just not yet oil flow everywhere.

MecaLogic say I bought an m73 a couple months ago and the old owner had used sea foam which was poured into the oil cap , how would I go about flushing all the sea foam build up instead of just keep running it?? I don’t want to risk running it over and over attempting to “clear” out the sea foam if I haven’t changed the oil which was “recently changed”
