I was wondering about the cat walking across Stinkum when he got out of the car and the rat running across the street before Omar starts to whistle ''farmer in the dell''. I was wondering whether the production crew released the rat with food on the other side of the street or dropped the rat in a exposed way with a some kind of object to hide under on the other side of the street, off the camera angle.

Omar was whistling "A hunting we will go, A hunting we will go. We'll catch a fox and put him in a box. And then we'll let him go. A hunting we will go." which Omar did by letting Wee Bey go. But Omar was trying to bait Wee Bey into going back to help Stinkum. An old hunting trick.

There’s a scene (I think season 1) where he’s robbing some east side dealers and whistling the tune. When he gets up to the boss he stops whistling and says “the cheese stands alone,” which is the last line of The Farmer in the Dell. So I always assumed that was it
@disguiseddv8ant486

@@rnodvn Well, "The Farmer in the Dell" was meant for that scene "The Pager" but, when Omar was robbing the drug dealers it was "A Hunting we will go". Remember, Omar was hunting for drug dealers and their leaders as the drug dealers were running away from him.
@TheBadLiutenant
@TheBadLiutenant Год назад
As realistic as this show is, Omar has gained a near-mythical stature within its world. In this scene he is almost like an unstoppable consequence and buying into his own legend he acts like it so convincingly that noone can hit him. You can see how much Weebey is terrified of him, with Omar's voice echoing at him like some horror figure hiding in the shadows. In the end, this same hubris became the end of old Omar. His death is one of the most pitiless and trivial deaths I have ever seen depicted. Almost like a comet crashing to Earth.
@cheatswiz58
@cheatswiz58 Год назад
He underestimated what threat the youth are capable of being (Michael scoots his attention bc of the same reason). We see him giving love to the streets in the beginning, but after his last talk with The Bunk, his alienation from their environment is revealed. If he had been truly honest with himself, and gave Baltimore a clear view, he probably would have seen a tiny murderer coming from down the block. Helpful message to us viewers, tho

An old, old, idea given its most famous modern form by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "when you strike at a king, you must kill him." But having Omar cite Emerson, if intended to be deliberate by the writers, actually fits well his complex character, and even if not, it's a sentiment a man like Omar in Omar's position might well come to all on his own, and the writing, set up and delivery here is just some of the best writing and line reading in TV history, no question.

The thing that makes The Wire so great is that there's no cheesy techno or wannabe hip-hop music in the scenes. No foreshadowing sounds or music. Its just the sound of the streets and sometimes whatever random song is on the radio. Thats as real life as you can get it 💯 When you watch the series again, notice how theres NO soundtrack. Omar's legend made his death ring so much louder AND it was perfect for the show. He didn't get his blaze of glory and he didn't get to ride off into the sunset in peace. He went out just like anyone else stuck in the same meaningless cycle violence that gets everyone. After all that action, he'd become another distant memory. An urban legend the old heads will misremember the details about and young kids will doubt ever existed
