At 17.30, what bonds of loyalty is it being suggested William Wallace broke? He had never made any oaths to the english king at all and never fought against John Baliol, even if he had it wouldn't have been regarded as treason in the feudal system. The english just accusing all their enemies of treason simply because they were born in a place that resisted english invasion didn't mean they had actually committed it

I agreed bro 👍 Also, if the argument from distributor is that the Scots should have stood with their Christian brothers - they did! Sir James Douglas carried King Robert's heart into battle against the moors, alongside European & presumably English soldiers, in an unwinnable battle, in a vain attempt to protect Spain from islamic encroachment. Hence the name, 'braveheart' As regards Wallace, he was being the guardian of Scotland. As he committed to be, in the presence of God & the future king of Scots 😊

Interestingly when Claus von Stauffenberg placed the timebomb in a breifcase right near the painters feet, a man next to him thought it a rude thing to do and moved it aside. Without that simple gesture it would have most likely killed him. Apparently the explosion didn't phase him at all, and he just remarked that it was a British bomb, because the flash from it was yellow.

Thanks for this. To pardon his opponents was Caesar's policy, in contrast to the ever more devastating reprisals and proscriptions of the social wars, and Marius and Sulla. Caesar was remarkable for this, and continues as such today. Even his supporters and friends were shocked by his mercy and moreover, he knew that Brutus despised him bitterly, root and branch. This should be remembered in the particular case of his pardon of Brutus. This situation whereby the person spared proceeds to kill his benefactor has been discussed in various faculties like theology, philosophy and psychology. It occurs enough to be admitted.

Borges has an interesting (heretical) take on the treachery of Judas in one of his short stories. He asks, what is the greater sacrifice, to die, or to become hated? Also, there's a good discussion on the topic of treachery between G. Gordon Libby and Buckley on an old Firing Line episode where Buckley comes off as being kind of lame for not "getting it" when it comes to not betraying comrades.

There was also a great persecution under the emperor Domitian. One of the reasons why the Nero martyrs and beyond got such elaborate deaths is due to the fact that Roman Citizens and non-Roman Citizens got different deaths, i.e. St. Peter (Non-Roman Citizen) is Crucified and St. Paul (Roman Citizen) is beheaded. Most Early Christians were not citizens, many of the Diocletian Martyrs were.

I disagree that Sir William Wallace was in any way disloyal. He committed to being "The guardian of Scotland", in the presence of the future king of Scots, Robert the Bruce. Without loyalty, the actions of Wallace cannot be understood
@seanoneil277
@seanoneil277 10 месяцев назад
Certain humans, those who often are seen as narcissistic, solipsistic, and lacking in empathy -- well, they can't understand the concept of loyalty. They only know complaint, victimhood, and deceit. Such people would want to rewrite the story of Scotland to make it all about how wise the bankers were, or something similar.

Isn't it crazy how these complex moral equations work like we all know when you commit treason if it's serving a higher order goal then it's less bad, meanwhile if you do it in such and such a sneaky way it's more bad this feels correct intuitively, and to an extent you can think of these things rationally --- a higher order is more important than a lower order, love offered and betrayed is worse than when no love is offered, and so on but when following these threads you always reach a point where rationality runs out, and you simply must acknowledge these moral truths, that we all recognize as moral truths, do not come from rational thought. And they certainly don't come from empirical observation. I know this is it not news to most people in this sphere, but I was struck by the elaborate complexity of morality, all these little ins and outs, rules and sub rules, all of which simply _are_ --- the rationalizations only make sense of what we already know --- and in many ways the rationalizations or explanations lose the nuance of the elaborate truth itself, which only exists in its complete state beyond words

58:30 - Distributist: Game of Thrones ended "with absolutely no conclusion or larger point." This is not correct. I know this is an older re-upload and you two explicitly mention that talking about Game of Thrones is pointless audience rage at this point, so I'll just briefly say... The issue is only that the conclusion and larger point were not illustrated well since the show-runners didn't know what to do with Martin's outlines - but the points were there. The major points from start to finish were.. • "breaking the wheel" and • showing who had loyalty to the realm against its true enemies versus those who merely wanted power over others. The hidden point behind "breaking the wheel" was that the Wheel of Fortune represented master and slave moralities. Daenerys was the final test of this: had she learned to let go of her slave morality and become a just defender of the realm, or was she merely a resentful re-enslaver? With all of her advisers gone (one by one), she was faced with her raw identity, which reverted to that of an enslaver and resentful destroyer. The Iron Throne was a symbol of this Wheel and its cycle of re-enslavement, and so, with the death of the final enslaver (Daenerys), the Throne is destroyed, and her slave army leaves the realm. Each other remaining character is tested in kind. The conclusion and larger point is that those who truly defend the realm do not become its enslavers but the guardians of a free era.
