I couldnt finish this film. It was far too boring and definitely oldmans worst role. His voice didnt fit and his own accent came through far too often for it to be unnoticable
Kubrick "telling" us about the conspiracies in Clockwork Orange, etc, is part of it, as they have to get our consent for the way things are, in order to be free of negative karma - their beliefs.
This is what the Tories have done with people on benefits. The reason we have skyrocketing food bank use is because the value of benefits have been halved over the last few decades but the Right wing press have so successfully demonised a whole swathe of people - many of whom are ill, disabled or living in benighted areas where there are no jobs - there is very little sympathy. Indeed there is denial at what's actually happening. This is because of ruthlessly partisan think tanks and because of people who spend their entire time politicking online
I remember seeing it in the cinema as an 8 year old. An enjoyable romp with excellent model effects & sets. Moonraker was the inevitable and enjoyably grandiose sequel, "For yours eyes only" pushed back in production order so "Moonraker" could cash in on the Star Wars sci-fi trend.
When Morgoth says, his speech slurring: "a few years later, after I'd turned me back on all that crap, I was sitting in a pub on a drunken night," I suddenly realised that, for possibly the first time ever, I've just heard him say something retarded.
It came out when I was eight years old. I watched it for the first time last night. I wasn’t ignorant to the premise, but did not know what to expect as an outcome. However, the movie became predictable to me and never more so in seeing his friend’s downfall in the Tokyo match. It was just narrative patterns to me. I want to give credence to your notion of commodification (I’ve photoshopped the McDonald’s arches in place of the star on Che’s beret) and the movie is not immune in and of itself. Maybe the filmmaker acknowledges that with the ending, maybe not. But here’s my alt-take: what becomes of the sport after Johnathan scores that point? Your take is that he validates the game. I say he ends it. But first, let me ding another of your ideas first. Smashing smug-ass Houseman with the rollerball would mean just one less oligarch, at least before the riots start. But who would suffer most? Obviously the population that might rise up in revolutionary fever. J knows how soft the population has become, he knows what the little white pills are for and that people are too trusting. Any malcontents would be squashed immediately by corporate thugs and memos would be issued letting the passive masses know that Rollerball will be back better than ever. In short, what good is a violent revolution in their current state? Killing the oligarch would be to kill the bravest amongst the population. After that bloodbath and that single point by the last man skating, the game is over. Johnathan E won Rollerball. Nothing will ever shine like him again. It f’ing boring from this point forward. Gone is the (interest in the) circus and so discontent will rise, but the example given will give more pause to consider, more cause to organize. Who knows what role Johnathan E plays in the insurgence? It is meant to be a nebulous ending and I respect different takes. But I felt him sinking that point long before he did because that’s the middle finger to the corporations in my eye. The oligarch will be deposed by his fellows anyway, just as quickly as if he was dead. I also like the theme for the masses; don’t get soft, it’s deadly out there if you do.
California and Texas are flooded with Latinos, both have a small white population; it's not that far fetched the foreigners would form a coalition against the whites. I don't watch movies, so I don't know if Texas and California were the 'good guys' in the movie or the right wing.
Interesting that you say that about Falling Down. I watched Nobody the other day (Bob Odenkirk, 2021) and thought it was basically a rehashed version of Falling Down.
It'd be nice if you made these more concise. It is interesting to listen to you, but you take too long to get to the point and never fail to take up 5 minutes, where 1 would be enough. I know you are going for that 'salt of the earth, northern guy gives wisdom down the pub' type thing, but people have things to do. It'd be more engaging and connect better, if it wasn't so unnecessarily verbose.
We the Porridge people and here is our dear leader Dog King, he allows us to exist in Mega city postcode 199. Even has the the rainbow collar on their uniform, fun film.
Not read the books so want talk about the them other than the really bad self insert fan fiction of sudo bond going after Nigel farage as a sudo far left Nazi stand in anti white message.
Beside casino royal, the second one meh and third I did not even properly watch just had it on in the back ground and after that killed all down hill did not bother with. piers brosnan was the last bond I’ll acknowledge.
Great stream gents… fine choice and brought in interesting and some lol funny talking points. Well played. My hunch is that Bond can, and will, get a lot worse before it gets better. The Craig movies seemed to be hanging on for ever more dear life after Casino Royale… it’s like they were forbidden from using the profitable and winning Bond formula. But just look at other major movie franchises, they all get eaten in the end!
I’d always put most of Moore’s films towards the bottom of the ranking, same with Dalton’s. But I rewatched the Moore and Dalton films around the time of the Coof, and I was pleasantly surprised how good they were. I’d be far too harsh on them, especially Dalton. The Living Daylights is underrated and so is Dalton as Bond. I completely believe he would be a hitman for the State.
I've been really enjoying watching the original Tales from the Crypt series. I normally am not big into horror aside from a few more prominent ones like The Shining and 28 Days Later, but although I never watched this show growing up, it is quite a comfy slice of late 80s early 90s Americana. When Morgoth said "Remember what a babe looks like?" it made me think of this series because they really liked using beautiful, big-breasted women for the female roles. It was also an amazingly star-studded series, with cameos from most of the A-list actors of the era. It is schlocky and cheesy at times, but it's just the right amount and it's really quite well done. I absolutely adored the James Bond series growing up, and I still do. I have such fond memories of watching those movies over and over with my father. It is great for a bit of escapism. The Spy Who Loved Me also inevitably makes me think of The Spy Who Shagged Me, the second Austin Powers movie. I must have watched the first two Austin Powers movies a hundred times. Those were all my favorites, along with the Monty Python movies and and anthologies of episodes. Man, sometimes I really wish I could go back. It really isn't just nostalgia, those genuinely were brighter days. I hope we can recapture that joy as a society someday, because we seem increasingly dour.
