There are more ethnic Tamils on the planet than there are Italians, but what do you know about the origin and history of the Tamils? The Tamils are an extremely ancient group with a history that ties them with many in and around the Subcontinent, particularly Southeast Asia, and in the past were one of the major classical civilizations of South Asia, but not even those from India really know too much about them.
In today's video we'll be looking at the Tamil's, one of Southern India's most well-known people groups, as well as their relation to the other Dravidian groups, Indians and many of those who interacted with them over the millennia such as the Aryans, Europeans, Arabs and others. Thanks for watching!

Today Tamil locals are around 15000 in the town of Kuching, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu and other parts of Sarawak. Quite a number of them intermarry with the local ethnic group of Iban, Bidayuh, Orang ulus and even ethnic Chinese. The indigenous South Asians (AASI/SAHG), are the native population of the Indian subcontinent. They contributed rather high amount of ancestry to modern Indians, compared to other hunter-gatherer populations. Based on genetic research, it is suggested that they become largely isolated from other populations 40,000 years ago, after having diverged from the East-Eurasian meta-population, the ancestors of East Asians and Australasians, somewhere in South Asia 50kya. Tribal groups, such as the Kharia, Irula, Soliga, and Paniya, persevered high AASI/SAHG ancestry (80%) and can be used as proxy for them. AASI/SAHG share their relative highest affinity to Onge (Andamanese peoples) but also, but more distantly, with the modern East/Southeast Asians and Australo-Melanesians. The Andamanese (Onge) were previously used as imperfect proxy because we had not any other useful comparison samples. Than in late 2019 (Narasimhan et al. 2019, Shinde et al. 2019), it was found that if we use Han-Chinese or eastern Siberians as proxy, we came to similar results as with the Onge proxy. Yelmen et al. 2019 found that the AASI/SAHG are best samplified by the indigenous Kharia, Irula, Paniya, and Soliga people. They are most closely related to the ancestors of East Asians and Australasians, although Australasians harbor increased archaic admixture and perhaps also admixture from a more basal lineage close to the Bacho Kiro/Ust'Ishim split. The paternal lineage associated with the AASI/SAHG is haplogroup H, but also subclades of the F, K, and C1, which are suggested to have originated in India and also reached Southeast Asia and Europe during the Paleolithic/Neolithic. H seems to represent the main indigenous Indian marker. There were migrations through India earlier though, such as the ancestors of Oceanians and Andamanese, which however left not much traces (hg D common in Andamanese is absent from AASI or modern Indians, except Tibeto-Burmese speakers in Northeast India). Here we have the ancestry groups from the Neolithic period: One of the Indus Valley sample “I4411” which is taken from a site of Indus Valley Civilisation in Rakhigarhi village shows affinity with Irula individuals and had about ~70% AASI ancestry. Others had around 1/3 AASI and 2/3 Iran Neolithic. People with high AASI/SAHG ancestry usually look like that What language did the AASI speak? The linguistic history of South Asia is disputed. Proposals for the AASI language range from Dravidian to Vedda or Nihali. Recently, Narasimhan et al. 2019 proposed that proto-Dravidian may have originated from the indigenous AASI/SAHG population in southeastern peninsula India, and not from the Iranian component, although the linguistic conclusion is open for debate. However others maintain that Dravidian was introduced by Neolithic Iranian farmers or earlier related Iranian hunter-gatherers. Religious traditions It is well known that the many folk religions of modern India trace back to the indigenous religious traditions and got absorbed into modern Hinduism, which formed primarily from the indigenous Indus Valley civilization religion, other folk traditions and from “Aryan” traditions of the Steppe and BMAC horizon. We know that the folk religions are polytheistic and based on animistic concepts, somewhat similar to Japanese Shinto. There was also ancestor worship. Ancestor worship was likely a very central part. Many gods and goddesses as well as various spritits, deities and other beings were worshiped, including important plants (also similar to Shinto). Many of these aspects got preserved in tribal religions and the Dravidian folk religion. Concepts like pantheism/monotheism but also rebirth/reincarnation and samsara, arrived with the Steppe pastoralists it was not common until the upanishads I hope this anser clarifies many questions about indegenous south Asians and modern Indian people

Great work Sir. I am a Tamil living in Singapore. This is the deepest and clearest summary of Tamil Anthropology I have known. I feel a little sad about needing a White Man on RU-vid to tell me my own story. I wish we Tamils knew our own story well, that the ones before us had retained and passed down the stories of our origins. Nevertheless, I feel grateful to have this opportunity to learn the history of my ethnic group. I have a question for you, Sir. Do you think there is a case to be made for the Tamils to have their own country? Meaning Tamil Nadu State seceding from India and merging with Tamil coastal regions of Sri Lanka to form one Tamil Country for all Tamils. I have always felt this only makes sense, would you please enlighten me with your learned mind?

It definitely did not started at one place on earth or what westerners called it ....Europe There is a history of migration of human beings at different places all over earth since thousands of yrs but that does not mean that they all migrated from Europe to India and gave us civilization which we protected and preserved for till today for them to and in modern times of few centuries tell us about false Aryan invasion theory It is absurd to say that aryans came and gave us this civilization and we protected and enriched that civization and literally defended it over centuries and those aryans who migrated from some Europe land just lost their own civilization and culture in their own lands and now present modern western view suddenly started knowing Indian civilization as borrowed from West as per Aryan theory It is too hypocritical and undigesttable😀😃
