Here are the main reasons.
1) The junction box provides a housing for the excess cable and addition room required by the cable connectors and power connectors. This includes BNC connectors for analog CCTV cameras and RJ-45 coupler connections for network IP cameras.
2) The junction box can be permanently installed on the building with tapcon screws and sealed with silicone. The camera is mounted to the junction box using predrilled holes and machine screws. If you ever need to take the camera down for service or replace it, it is a very simple operation with the machine screws, instead of dealing with tapcon screws or anchors, and needing to reseal with silicone if the camera was mounted directly to the building.
3) There is a chain that attaches the junction box cover plate to the base plate. This makes installations easier. The camera can be pre-mounted to the plate and dangle in the air while all of the cable is connected and tucked into the junction box base housing.
