For people who are prone to Distress, the soothe system is often underdeveloped and that means that people are either stuck in a state of Threat or in a state of Drive. That leads to stress and BURNOUT. understand the threat drive soothe systems.
There's not much scope to recover or de-escalate Distress without a capacity to Soothe. We get into ways to activate your Soothe system to better manage emotional Distress. That will need some self compassion. Really. Prevent burnout! how to prevent burnout. how to recover from burnout.
We talk about how the Threat/Drive/Soothe systems relate, when they are useful and how that fits into a Schema Mode conceptualisation. We discuss how the Distress tolerance is improved by utilisation of the soothe system. This model was derived by Paul Gilbert as part of Compassion-Focussed Therapy.

Thank you. This completely makes sense to me, as it aligns with my lived experience. I'm unpacking all this in movement and abstract therapies as I work through c-PTSD symptoms. This video helps me digest theory, which is what the analytical side of me needs to validate and work through what my body is experiencing.

what happens when you are stuck in self soothe and anything else makes you distressed? Like your window of tolerance is very narrow and the self-soothe is unhealthy, such as avoidance, escapism, retreat from society and self-isolation? Where does one go from there?

Gradual exposure therapy. Just increasing exposure to distressing triggers bit by bit.

But then if you were in the threat system 100% of the time..you'd never have time for drive? It would just be soothing..so how would you accomplish anything in life??

......................i don't think you understood. The brain is always scanning for the possibility of a threat. That's normal.... That means your brain is a brain and is functional enough to have any survival or preservation response at all.

Hi, great video! I suffer from hypochondria and it distresses me a lot. When I have a symptom I need to get rid of it or do a battery of tests to make sure it’s nothing serious. How can I use the self soothing here or is it applicable? Because it’s about health and life and death in my mind, it’s not the distress of work prbs or relationships prbs! Thank you very much.

All of these different models seem to be based on the individual having had some kind of childhood trauma/neglect, but I don't understand!! I don't have that experience, I had a pretty safe and nurturing and secure childhood, I was just an anxious child who worried about germs and comets and stuff. My parents and family are still there for me and there's no drama there. But the other things I relate to 100%, the pingponging between drive, threat and burnout! So it doesn't have to come from trauma, right?

Trauma is not a precondition for this. Everyone moves between these states to some degree. The more trauma, temperamental neuroticism or chaos the more threat mode.

Can you suggest resources or techniques to develop self compassion for people who have NONE and don’t think they deserve any?!
