If overlanding with kids seems intimidating to you or you aren't sure how to start, this is a guide filled with the most helpful tips we've gathered through experience. Our four-year-old has been traveling full-time by vehicle since he was born. We also share suggestions for families with tweens and teens.
Kids are NOT a reason (or excuse) to avoid overlanding! In fact, overlanding with children is incredibly rewarding for every member of the family. We hope this video empowers you to get started.

🌎 Who we are and what we’re doing:
We’re Eric + Brittany + Caspian Highland, and we’re getting ready to drive around the world! June-August 2021, we completed our Jeep Gladiator build. Now we’re in our shakedown period. On October 9, we plan to cross the southern border into Mexico. Over the next 10-15 years, we intend to drive through all six habitable continents on the planet. We started traveling full-time in February 2014 and have never looked back.

I'm first to comment. Thank you for sharing your expertise on life on the road. It made me feel better about taking my child with me. I've decided to try overlanding, I say try because idk if it'll work for us but I'm going into it with a positive mind set. I will put my all into it, I won't give up if I get a little stress. Much love to you and your family.

Thank you Art. Appreciate the love on the video. A little bummed that more people haven’t seen it because the topic is so near and dear to our hearts. We get more views talking about gear and stuff, but this lifestyle is about so much more than that. This. This is the important stuff. Appreciate your comment. ~ Eric

You have hit the nail on the head with working on problem solving skills. For the last couple of years before retirement as an 8th grade teacher, I was (and still am) very concerned at the growing inability of students to problem solve. It seems that as more parents have left home to work full-time, they have just left their children to gaming or TV and are not teaching them to problem solve or embrace boredom as an opportunity to be creative. I fear for the future of our nation if children are not taught to think for themselves and learn to problem solve. I fully support homeschooling for parents who do it well (we homeschooled for 4 years). Travel can be such an awesome way to teach and learn things you could not learn in any other way. Caspian is one lucky kid! Safe travels! Can't wait to hear and see what you all are experiencing. Awesome memories waiting to be made! (Jane)

Hi Jane! We have been very blessed to be able to spend so much intentional time with our son. He's extremely curious and his learning blossoms exponentially with our lifestyle. I too am concerned for future generations. Ultimately our hope is not only to provide our son with a solid education, but more importantly the love of learning. His mother has that, I have that, and we hope it will be contagious for our son. Thank you for being a member of our community and welcome! ~ Eric

This video was extremely helpful and thank you for the tips. Not a lot of “overland” channels in RU-vid really cover this subject much. Our son is almost 1 and we’re looking to get back into it soon. I know it’s still too soon for us now but how did you guys potty train Caspian while on the road? I can imagine it was difficult
@HourlessLife
@HourlessLife 2 года назад
Hey, thanks Kevin. Funny story. My mom (who successfully potty trained two boys) decided Caspian was ready to potty train right after he turned two. It was Christmastime. She didn't consider that we were about to leave for our first overlanding trip into Mexico, haha. But Caspian was doing so well with it that we loaded up a frog-shaped potty in a plastic bag and carried it in the backseat of the Jeep. There was definitely a moment that barely-two Caspian had us pull off the highway in Mexico to go #2 while semitrucks whooshed by right beside us. Good times. Highly recommend you follow instagram.com/twins_on_wheels_/. They're living in a van with twin daughters and potty training right now. -B

Good to see that you guys are having fun! Now that you have spent time with the Alu Cab, what kind of mpg decrease does it cause? Does it feel top heavy? Is it loud while driving? Thank you so much guys and stay safe!
@HourlessLife
@HourlessLife 2 года назад
Hi Induction, so the short answer is we love it and DAUNTLESS drives like a sedan. He’s really dialed in. It’s really hard to talk about decreased gas mileage because there are so many factors beyond the Canopy Camper that contribute to that. Having said that, we get about 15mpg on average and anywhere from 16-17 on the highway. It doesn’t feel top heavy to me, but you definitely know our build is on there. It is a little louder than most Gladiators as our exhaust had to be moved and adjusted for our external fuel tank. But it isn’t obnoxiously loud. Inside the cab you can’t really tell. Hope that is helpful. ~ Eric

@@HourlessLife That are all good news and 15-17 MPG on a globetrotting home on wheels is not bad at all... it's actually very good! I hope that this setup serve you well for years to come.

1. How you security your car and family when travel în another countries? With what defend? Many countries not allow Guns. 2. Do you have sidewalls for awning? Will be many days with Rain...
@HourlessLife
@HourlessLife 2 года назад
Hey Blank. 1. We use a lot of common sense, situational awareness, and information from locals, and fellow travelers. We also like to intentionally connect with locals who are into off road and overland activities. 2. We do not have the sidewalls. We tend to watch the weather closely and when necessary we can live with a bit of rain. ~ Eric

@@HourlessLife Thank you! I like your family. Tips for you: 1. Always (night) hold in canopy one ax and if is posibility one macette. 2. Four small cameras tv, with night vision, one in front car, one back, one left, one right. You can watch cameras in your canopy. 3. If me make one journey like you (must have) always with me will be one dog. Not big, not small... it is one Mallinois dog. It is amazing this dog, army and police have, it is one very good dog for your protection. Watch youtube video with Mallinois dogs! 4. Don't trust in evrybody traveller! Sometime it is fake traveller! Good luck!

Hi Fawn! So we are home/road/world schooling our son. I wish you could meet him in person. He’s so hungry and curious and we take what he is passionate about and dive into it! I’d recommend you send us a direct message on Instagram as Brittany is the one who checks those messages. I’m sure she would be happy to chat with you about it.
