How to finish 3d prints and post-processing to get ready for painting!
We are back to basics! Painting 3D Prints for Beginners tutorial series featuring a super awesome "The Thing" chibi. Welcome to the first part of this four part series on 3D printing and painting basics. In this series, I will be taking you through the entire process step by step to create an amazing painted 3D printed work of art.
This video is getting you started at the ground level with post processing your PLA 3D print. I begin with taking the finished 3D print off of the printer build plate. Then I go over taking off supports, smoothing your prints, sanding and putty your prints, as well the assembly and gluing together for those perfect seamless joints. After you're done watching you will have a full understanding of what you need to do for post-processing and finishing a 3D printed model.

depending on your filament you can use a very small amount of acetone on a papertowel and a glas bowl in to make a make-shift vapor chamber to smoothen the surface but that might need some practice to be effective

Is it better to assemble it before painting or paint individual pieces and then glue it together?
@ItsMeaDMaDe
@ItsMeaDMaDe Месяц назад
It really depends sometimes it’s easier to just assemble and then paint if it doesn’t have hidden seems. But if the seems are hidden you can paint it separately the. Glue it together

Hey Chris I have another question, sorry for so many questions lol I’ve been watching over your videos a few times and I got everything that you showed to purchase to make your own wash my question is how can you determine when exactly to use a wash and exactly how to apply it on certain things for example I just made 6 to 7 inch Chucky doll and want it to define the texture more so that things come out my question is do I do the wash first or do I prime it first? do I wait to paint the whole thing and then use a wash where exactly would I apply the wash or should I even do the wash at all sorry for such long question.
@ItsMeaDMaDe
@ItsMeaDMaDe 2 года назад
First don’t ever apologize for the questions I’m truly glad to help you. Washes. You kinda asked a loaded question. There are so many ways and times to use washes. So bare with me on this answer. Primer always first. No matter what. The primer is your base coat that allows your other paints to adhere to your model. Your wash could be added at any time. You can cover the model or only in specific areas. If you really want to bring out texture I like to base coat color a little lighter that you want. Then black wash. (That darken to the color you wanted…hopefully take time to understand and get right) then I do a dry brush over the area with a lighter color or even a darker. Save your test prints and practice different options. Hope that helped. You brought to light I probably should do a video on this topic.

Hello. For the models that were produced with resin and have a very smooth surface, do you roughen their surface with sandpaper before painting?Or there is no need? If yes, what sanding number do you use for models that are made with resin?
@ItsMeaDMaDe
@ItsMeaDMaDe Год назад
If it’s a clean print with no layer lines I don’t sand it. But for resin processing I did make a video showing how I did that. This was only focusing on fdm.

Yes. But you have to be very careful. It’s probably best to just use sand paper.

hi. for fdm 3d print, PLA filament better than ABS? Can the ABS be sanded or painted easily after printing? Are these two materials (PLA and ABS) very different? thanks.
@ItsMeaDMaDe
@ItsMeaDMaDe 10 месяцев назад
I wouldn’t say one is better than the other. People use them for different things, and each have different uses. ABS is very strong and people like to use that for prototyping but it is harder to print and can be a little bit finicky, but PLA is a lot easier to print, especially for beginners and the added bonus is it doesn’t give an odor when it’s printing unlike ABS. Both are pretty much the same when it comes to sanding and painting I hope that helps you.

I watched your rub-n-buff video as well as this one (great videos and techniques, by the way) but I couldn't help but notice the overabundance and "protection" when using both the rub-n-buff as well as the glazing putty. Just for the record, EVERYTHING seems "to be known to the state of california to cause cancer and reproductive harm." Oddly... only california seems to know about this phenomenon. I mean... you do you, of course, but the respirator is overkill for "fumes." PLUS... I can't help but notice that you didn't wear (or recommend) the respirator when sanding - which would have been a better use case scenario - or when using the Gorilla Glue... and according to it's data sheet, has the same "detrimental effects" as the glazing putty... Just sayin' is all ;) But... Love the videos and can't wait to go watch the rest of the series!

Lol. The life of a RU-vidr 😅. I completely understand what your saying. On other videos I’ve gotten a lot flack from people saying I’m not using certain PPE that I should be using. I just try to make people aware of the safety precautions. Do I always do them…? No. But it’s my safety and I don’t care cause I’m in a really well ventilated room. But you did get me on the sanding & glue. My wife gets on me about that too. 😂. Thanks for watching I’m glad your enjoying the series.
