As a video game player and an artist/GUI designer for a video game studio the only way I can make sense of how some people argue against games being art is that they haven't actually experienced them. If games are not art neither is film or opera or motorcycles - all are a marriage of different art forms, technology and design.

I fully agree, games themselves are not only an art. (as in gameplay, strategy, technique, psychology, the list goes on...) but they contain both artwork, music, storytelling, and lovely lovely code. Video Games are a potent fusion of art, and the best indicator of that is the obvious of naivete of those who haven't bothered to explore them well, in assuming that they understand them. Just as with any art. ;)

Snakes and Ladders is probably the first interactive art. Over 2,000 years old, it expresses destiny and complete faith. If we want to make artistic games a reality, we have to take it as an example.
@shadowhamster
@shadowhamster 11 лет назад
Yeah, I feel the same, and we might lose some of the more artistic ones in time. A lot goes unnoticed, and a video game is different from a normal game, because sometimes you aren't playing a game, but instead interacting in a story.
@P4INKillers
@P4INKillers 11 лет назад
It has to do with how well someone can appreciate it. If anyone makes the claim that video games can't be art because it's code, I would argue that it's because they don't see code the way a programmer would see it. There are many times when I've seen understandable, efficient and well-written code and thought "that's beautiful!" This lead me to believe that wether something is art or not is dependent on the beholder. If Paola Antonelli sees it as art, she's not wrong.
@P4INKillers
@P4INKillers 11 лет назад
Absolutely. There's a wide range of disciplines used when creating a video game, and it's expanding still. Some developers are going as far as hiring psychologists for consulting on characters and their motivations.
@kayamo

Exactly, games are a potent fusion of multiple artforms, interactivity brings it to a whole new level. Virtual worlds are going to lead art to places its never been.

@gadgetwhore2

I'll agree with that. As an artist, I think the definition of art should be tied to the intent of the maker. It may be a functional thing, but it (a useful thing) can be made in a way so it can be appreciated for its esthetic as well as useful values. I like the food analogy, it blurs the same lines as art.

so much effort and thought goes into making games nowadays it's ridiculous. I do feel that the games that started this shift in culture should be held as dearly as ancient works of art

The reason she said Beretta was in context of her being Italian. Beretta is an Italian institution dating back almost 500 years. By contrast, the AR-15, while carrying the relevance you describe, is an American product barely 50 years old.

I think it's more the point of WHO painted it, rather than WHAT's painted, like the saying: "it's 70% how you look, 20% how you sound, and 10% what you say." and it reminds me of a famous child painter (around 3 years old I think) that had paintings that sold for millions of dollars, but when question as to who painted then came to question, the prices potentially dropped from millions to hundreds at least if my recollection serves me well
@kayamo

Add to this interactivity, and soon people will realize that they are the transition to a new revolution of art. Fully interactive, malleable, immersive, digital worlds. As real seeming as our own.

Paola Antonelli, I'm going to remember this talk. She are brilliant! Re-framing the "Are video games art" question as design makes sense! There is always art in design but it's not it's not its purpose. I'm glad I found this.

As to the GTA debate: While it is true there is plenty of violence to be had if one so wishes it, there are also plenty of tasks and quests which have naught to do with violence. Take the drunken-driving quest from Vice City, in which you have to drive someone somewhere while intoxicated. The reaction times in the code and the screen visuals are altered with a sort of blurry surrealism. That's good design, and artistic to boot. You could also taxi people, fight fires, and play EMT.

I mean, most game development studios call it "art assets", or "assets" for short. And they hire trained artists, they're called artists, and mostly what they make are 3D models and they paint textures to go over the wireframe model. Not unlike papier mache, just set in a high tech context.

Spec-ops: The Line. Not as a design piece, but as a full fledged piece of contemporary and relevant art. Plainscape Torment, alpha centauri, Final Fantasy IX and X, Metal Gear Solid are also games that deserve some praise for their artistic contribution, among many others. If I were the curator, I would make "the spoiler room", where these games are explained, exerts are shown (and in some cases, game music as well). Games can be art, just like anything else.

Yes, thank you. No one is saying ALL video games are art, but SOME are. MIssile Command is definitely art, it's sense of stress and inevitable loss was all artistic communication from the artist about the fears of nuclear war. It was based on his own stresses and fearsof nuclear war that spurred him to create it, and it's subtly amazing in that light. It isn't terribly fun, and it's time has gone, but it's ability to speak hasn't. We need to preserve these kinds of things.

Code is one of the most beautiful inventions of mankind. From a simple yes or no gate, into more complex formations that are understandable to humands, resolving into you know: The internet, space travel, etc. 0's and 1's. That's art.

I spent a lot of time thinking about, and discussed with friends, and tried to distill "art" into a definition I was comfortable with. It came down to this. The creator rules and majority has no say in it. If the creator(painter/musician/coder/chef/mechanic/serial killer/computer/whatever) see's his/her/it's creation as art, then it is. No one can IMO deminish/take away the intent of the creator. Nor can anyone dictate a creation is art, but the creator.

I agree, my issue is far too many people get up on their high horses and try and say video games are not art just because it is code or it doesn't "move" them personally. A little kids finger painting is art, even if it moves only mommy. I don't understand how people can even know the amount of creativity and work that goes into a video game, and call it "NOT ART!" Even code itself can be a work of art or a complete abysmal array of shit.

What is art, if not an expression of emotion, a work meant to inspire and influence? That is my definition of art, and video games fall into the same category. Think of the work put into creating music, envrioments, characters, gameplay synergy, story and even ethics. So many people are moved by video games, they are pushed beyond the limit of their imagination. That is art.

Check out a game named "The Infinite Ocean" (free to play at armor games, kongregate etc). I won't spoil, but if you pay attention to the story, it makes argument for code being one of the most powerful and beautiful medium to express human creativity. That's not the only message of the game, but that's a conclusion one can make from playing it.

You might consider it an art to build those, and as a fellow programmer I totally agree with you on that, but one of the most fundamental way to define a piece of art is that it must exists by itself and only for itself. I'm sorry if it offends you, but because of that very definition, writing a program does not makes you an artist, it makes you a designer. Software does not exist for itself. It has a purpose. This is why programming is considered crafting.

One of the fallacies I think some people often commit, is that they see their taste in art as the norm for what passes for art. People are tempted to say "You call this food?" if someone serves them something that wasn't palletable to them. Much the same way, self proclaimed art enficionados may feel tempted to declare something as not being art on the basis that it does not conform to the metrics of what they are used to view as art. In that sense my definition tries to shelter any artist.

I'm still wondering if inclusion is what we're struggling with or if we're simply blurring the line. Many things that exist now did not exist when the modern concept of galleries and exhibitions (art forms spread out in a relatively empty space with light walls) started. So are we simply at a time where we need to rethink our definition or is it time for us to subdivide the concept of "art galleries".

GTA was simply violent self indulgence. It has a significance within the gaming culture, but not particularly within design. Of course, the sandbox element is something that is noteworthy design-wise, but I do understand that they don't want to have it exhibited.

The thing is, Modern art relies more on the story behind the painting and ideas of "de-construction." Obviously the painting is not pleasing to the eye but its the concept of breaking the rules that were in place before. That being said, $137.5 million is still an absurd amount of money to be paying for a painting

Did you even watch the video? The presentation is about why Pacman deserves it's place in the MOMA within the DESIGN section of the museum. Just because it's old and not as amazing graphically/gameplay wise as newer games doesn't mean it doesn't inherit a unique design. You will have to see the evolution over the years and not just the difference between newer and older programs. No arcade games like Pacman would mean that the whole game industry would have taken other turns

games are definitely design, and personally i do view them as art, and allot of artistic vision goes into their creation, from music, to visual arts, to literature and story telling. but art is frequently a very subjective thing, and is more of a personal preference than a set in stone "this is what art is" thing. i would ask, is dragon age: origins not art, but the books connected to the game are?

silly people writing those articles about how video games can't be art... art is not defined by the tools used to create it, nor by its physical appearance - although both can be a part of it. as soon someone puts something from him/herself into a creation - a feeling, experience, mood, etc - it becomes art. video games are not just having the potential of becoming brilliant expression of art, but are extremely suitable for it.
