good stuff Tom, that's a long trip! I'm sure you guys will have heaps of fun. I recently stopped few times going to Canberra at the Goulburn SC, very handy. Back in Sep 2020 we did a NSW road trip down in the snowy mountains(staying at Dalgety) and we were charging a lot in Jindabyne at the NRMA fast charger close to the shopping center which at that stage was free (hopefully still nowadays :P ).

Thanks Tom, great video as always, my family plus dog did the same day 1 journey just after Christmas, same stops, but as our accommodation didn’t have a destination charger we used the 1 of 2 NRMA 50kw (free) charger at Nuggets Crossing in Jindabyne. We then toured around the snowys for a few days including the Yarrangobilly thermal pools. Usually I would drive into Jindabyne from our accommodation on Barry Way, plug in at the NRMA charger grab a coffee some bakery stuff for breakfast, I would then have enough charge for the rest of the day touring. If you’d used Chargefox at Goulburn, you’d be literally across the street from the Goulburn North Maccas while charging. Not the shortest walk through two car parks, sure, but still convenient. Ditto if you had enough juice to press on to Canberra and use the supercharger at Majura Park Maccas, which is literally within spitting distance. Efficiency :) Speaking of that, we dragged my nephew to Cooma, Jindy and Charlotte Pass last month. Charged at Cooma Chargefox, while we took him through the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre, like you just said. Again, efficiency :)

Hi Tom - great video but i'm still not sure that EVs will ever be the economical means of transport for country Australia. I used to own a property in Jindabyne and drive a Camry Hybrid between there and Sydney. With petrol prices at around $2/L and getting 5L/100km my total cost was about $50 for the trip. The cost of power for your tesla would have come in at about $49 if you had filled the battery to the 95% that you started off with, and had to pay $0.52/kWh at all the Tesla chargers, if you had had to pay for them. Modern Hybrids will be still leading the way for a while yet and they can be filled up anywhere. Still I enjoyed the scenery.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 2 года назад
Thanks Ron, hybrids certainly are economical
@onefiniteplanet
@onefiniteplanet 2 года назад
Camry is great, and I have done this trip many many times at 5l/100km in other vehicles as well, so 10l/100km is a real gas guzzler. But something wrong in the fuel calculations, as on his figures it would have cost you $57.60/2 = $28.80 which is far less real than your just under $50. However, Tom could have charged at chargefox for $0.32 per kWh if he did not have free Tesla charging, which would have reduced his price significantly.
@onefiniteplanet
@onefiniteplanet 2 года назад
@@LudicrousFeed Yes, and 5l/100km is closer to reality for many ICE cars, including all I have done that trip in over the past 15 years, but there are two errors in your maths, as you under calculate the cost of fossil fuel somehow (460 km at 10l/100km and $2 litre would be $96), and if you did not have free Tesla charging, wouldn't you have used chargefox as 32c / kWh at both Goulburn and Cooma?

Hi Clayton, I'm actually using the figures from 'Range Added' for both charging and fuel costs. I was surprised that the ICE fuel cost was so close, and that an ICE vehicle that achieves 5l/100km, which I have managed in practice from Sydney to the Jindabyne time and time again, would cost in fuel costs than the Tesla if paying for supercharging. But then I did some maths. at $2 per litre, a 10l/100km car costs $20/100km. Sydney to Jindabyne is 460 from Sydney, so that would be $92 in fuel. Even a 5l/100km car would be $46 to refuel at $2 per litre. Yes, fuel prices can be below $2, but not that far below, something seems wrong in the calculations, or I am missing something.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 2 года назад
I am being generous to ICE by using the conservative credit/range added to each charge in my Tesla account statement as opposed to range travelled If I was to use the distance travelled method then yes, it would favour EVs/Tesla even more so
@onefiniteplanet
@onefiniteplanet 2 года назад
@@LudicrousFeed It is great you are sharing the experience, but i think that the combination of quoting an extremely fuel consumption for ICE far higher than people will usually experience, combined with this calculation method, unfairly makes EVs look more expensive on a road trip than ICE vehicles, unless you have access to free supercharging. Hard to do a comparison, as with an EV you do not always fully charge, while for an ICEV on a road trip, you almost always fill the tank, and do not refuel as often as you recharge, but I think at the moment some (like me at first) will get the impression the EV will cost more on a trip, when after recalculating, I do not think it is it real that travelling in an EV will cost more. Look forward to hearing more on the trip.

These cars are externally primitive to an ice car. This car charging at 1000ks an hour. Imagine a gas car stopped at a petrol station for 1 hour, with a tow hook towing 100 tankers, you’d have enough juice to drive to the moon and back

Thanks for your comment Jim, I can only speak for my family but we have not felt delayed by any significant amount of time on our road trip so far. In fact, we've all had a great time!

You should have mentioned that the NRMA branded chargers, operated by Chargefox, are free to all users. And, with purely Chargefox chargers, being a member of an auto club, like NRMA, RACV etc, gives you 20% discount. This makes a big difference on cost compared to Tesla, ie free, 32c & 52c /kWh. I have done many trips like this & use the cheapest available. Using Just Tesla is costly & have found the others mostly idle so not depriving a non-Tesla EV owner of a charge. Give the full details please Tom, otherwise your trip report is wasted.

Thanks Peter, I will be embellishing details in future videos so please stay tuned 🙏🙂 Also I am aware that NRMA chargers will not be free forever hence the need to future-proof these videos!

@@LudicrousFeed Tom, thanks for response, but to future proof your video all you had to do was say this when you showed the NRMA chargers. Remember, NRMA are making them free to all users to promote EVs. They might also remain free to members. You even joined NRMA when you didn’t have to, so it would have been great to promote this aspect. And just using Tesla chargers puts no pressure on them to reduce cost, so why use them exclusively? I have a Tesla M3 too, but I have a choice to use others & if cheaper, why not. Evie, is 30c/kWh & expanding, if they can charge this why not Tesla? My home rate is 12c in off peak, so I am used to cheap charging. Keep up the reports, but give us all the details please.

Thanks Peter, I see where you’re coming from and I appreciate your input, I will include more details in upcoming videos so please stay subscribed, viewers! I’m just grateful there are more options for EV drivers given there will be more on the roads in coming years 🙂

@@LudicrousFeed Thanks Tom. In case you haven’t arrived in Wodonga yet, the Tesla superchargers are next to local government buildings which include their modern Library. Toilet facilities can be used there, not obvious.

No way I would buy an EV for long road trips. Having to stop every couple of hrs to recharge, planning your route so carefully, limited to public super chargers. I have a GT Stinger and I can drive about 700 kms on the highway before refueling. The average person with the average 4 cylinder can go even further. To me, an EV is great if you have a 2nd car for long trips or you only drive locally.

@@LudicrousFeed Haha. A Stinger GT suits everyone brother! Fast, spacious for 5 adults, large boot, sexy looking, packed with features. Who doesn't that suit? 😉
