I’m currently respraying a classic car at home. I’ve done cars before, purely as a hobby, I’ve looked at numerous videos on best approach and techniques but yours are by far the best. Clear and concise tips which I’m finding very useful, thanks. In reference to the wet on wet when re priming the car over the “rub throughs” just before the top coat, how many coats for thinned primer should be reapplied?

Love it. These videos are so good for me, I’m learning so much, and I’m in the process of stripping my classic down to bare metal, and you detailed advise is very helpful to me as I’ve never sprayed a car before, only tinned spray paint is all I’ve done, so the work on this anglia is helping me out lots. Still unsure on things so hoping I find the answers on here. Please keep up doing videos for us guys learning to prep and spray. Thank you again for spending tine doing the videos, it’s a lifesaver for me 🙏🏼

Great tip on lattice masking-i too use paper for the reasons you mentioned on the polish. Great video as usual Tony. Wondered how the lighting in your inflatable booth is set up? would you consider an episode on lighting? Thanks.

hi scott thanks im trying to get as much info in these now as i can and seems people are getting something from it which is good , and yes i will be doing a new booth video in the next month or so anyway so il incorporate it into that

great video tony, do you prefer to block and dry sand the guide coat rather than wet sanding, is there much of a difference to the finish
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 7 лет назад
hmmm i think its a personal choice, abrasive technology over the years has come on leaps and bounds and personally these days you can achieve just as good of a prepped finish dry as you can wet , i prefer dry as its easier to clean the car down and get it ready for the booth after prepping as there are no water droplets anywhere or damp spots holing paint residue to worry about, the car can be air-lined off easily and prepped in minutes

Great videos and very informative. I'm prepping a mk1 golf gti which is my first attempt at painting. Do you sand the high build off the edges of the panels? I've filled some areas with dolphin glaze as I've been going around the car and coated with UPOL acid8 primer, can I just high build straight over it? Looking forward to part3!!
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 7 лет назад
yes i dont see a problem high build priming ontop of the acid etch at all, as for sanding the high build off the panel edges im not sure 100% what you mean there
@evielees3107
@evielees3107 7 лет назад
Thanks. Sorry I meant where the outer skin of the boot lid folds over and leaves an edge. On the video it looks like the primer has been sanded to bare metal
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 7 лет назад
+Evie Lees no if there is it's only if it's where it's been rubbed through when blocking , whoever possible you want to try and avoid running through but it's inevitable that it will happen somewhere

Will sanding with the d/a interface pad cause waves?
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 6 лет назад
not if used correctly no , i always use an interface pad for finishing unless its areas where i cant keep it flat or an even pressure , edges ect so i do these by hand

What primer you prefer over metal and body work? Self etch or epoxy? Nice video, just got your self a new subscriber
@lilj7072
@lilj7072 7 лет назад
Right.. but from what I read online, epoxy can still absorb moisture and can cause rust underneath?
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 7 лет назад
+LilJ707 anything can absorb water I suppose but epoxy was first mainly used in the marine refinishing market due to its durability and sealing properties and I'd much prefer it over say an etch , they can start to show surface rust just from a damp night in a workshop so I'd rather seal With epoxy do my work ontop of that and then use a good 2k primer from there
@lilj7072
@lilj7072 7 лет назад
Tonys_Refinishing your right.. I'm surprise with some of my parts I sprayed high build primer on that's been sitting outside for close to a year and doesn't have any signs surface rust.. but can I still do my bodywork on bare metal than spray the epoxy? I prefer the doing my metal work and doin filler work on bare metal ( I know I'm old school lol)
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 7 лет назад
yes theres no problem at all using the epoxy over your repairs and the bare metal
@davesage9190
@davesage9190 7 лет назад
Perhaps I'm getting ahead of the videos but once you've block sanded the whole car and gone back and put primer on the just cut-throughs and fine filler areas are the surfaces the same enough to just go ahead and paint? Or do you need to go back and carefully / lightly sand the whole thing again to make the surfaces all the same texture?
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 7 лет назад
hi dave , if done correctly the wet on wet method of using thinned down 2k primer as a sealer will not need any sanding after application before the top coat , if you put it on to thick or primed up with a normal high build coat primer layer then you would need to sand before gloss application as the surface finish would be off , the trick is the primer being thin and applying it smooth, hope this helps

Once sanded, before applying the colour what do use to get rid of dust etc? Is it just an airline and tack rag or do you wipe down with thinners or something?
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 7 лет назад
firstly clean down with a cloth and high pressure air from the airline , get in all the gaps and do this a few times , then i panel wipe, take in the booth and then panel wipe again after masking ect and then tack rag , go mix my paint come back into the booth and then use the air from the gun and tack cloth again ( just my method lol ) but in my opinion prep is key

Im thinking of getting a few panels painted At the same time i want to save myself money so if i prepped the panels so all had to literally do was paint and clear coat it.. would they mind? Also is a primer out of an aresol ok to put proper paint over the top? Thanks, Andy
@TonysRefinishingTV
@TonysRefinishingTV 6 лет назад
areosol primer is never good in a bodyshop in my opinion it doesnt like to be painted over with some paints, some shops will let you prep yourself and then they just paint but you will usually have no warranty on it ect, i myself dont paint anything unless i prep it myself but thats just me
@CooCuMbEr
@CooCuMbEr 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply.. i meant just a zinc primer over the repairs as a rust preventative after filler or welding Andy
