This is Part 2 of a 4-Part series on two iconic aircraft that defined the fledgling airline industry in the U.S.--the FORD TRIMOTOR in the first two parts and the DOUGLAS DC-3 in the second two.In Part 1 we covered the birth of the U.S. airlines in the first half of the 20th Century, with the help of airline history expert and author K. R. Wright who highlighted the horrific emergence of the airlines that led to the Trimotor airliner. We also got close-up views of operating Trimotor restorations now in exhibition service.
In this Part 2 we feature extremely rare 1989 footage of a ride in the then oldest Ford Trimotor in existence, former Island Airlines N7584, an early 4-AT-A. At the time it had the longest record of revenue service of any airliner--almost 60 years, and only the DC-3 has since eclipsed that. Our flight is off the grass strip at Creve Coeur Airport in St. Louis County, when owner/pilot Al Chaney was barnstorming the plane all over the U.S. We also feature a ride in a B-75 Stearman to get a feel of what it might have been like to fly in the early single-engine wire-and-fabric mail planes that flew contemporaneously with this Trimotor in the earliest days of the airlines.

My hubby flew in the right seat of N8407 last Sept with Bill Thacker. He really enjoyed it! Will do it again for 2024 on the Tri-motor, also do the DC-3 too.

I have not ridden on N8407 yet but am going to! It's been down for maintenance for a year or two, but I think it's now back up and running (or close to it). I too would like to catch the DC-3. Thanks for checking us out! J.A. Reed

I remember seeing the Ford Trimotors of Island Airways when I was kid. They had a total of three aircraft transporting people all over the southern islands of Lake Erie. Beautiful aircraft. I was super upset when the airline replaced the Trimotors with Beavers. Totally understand the reasoning but sure missed the Trimotors

Wonderful airplane. I never have had the chance to fly in a Ford Trimotor but did have a great flight in the right seat of a Stenson Trimotor many years ago at Sun-N-Fun. I would venture to guess that noise suppression was about the same for both ;-)

Thanks for watching, Mark. You are right, the noise was near intolerable! Also, I may I have seen the particular Stinson you flew in several times at Oshkosh, I think there is a shot of one flying by in Part 1. From what I understand there was only one flying in recent decades.

Tri motor was my first right seat ride from Port Clinton to put in bay back in 1966.

Kevin: Glad to reach guys like you who rode in it. I wasn't quite lucky enough to get in the right seat during our ride, but I'll take what I can get. Thanks for watching!

@@AeroDinosaur I rode in this and the other Ford that Island Airlines operated during the sixties. They flew daily scheduled service from Port Clinton to the Lake Erie islands in Ohio, South Bass (Put-In-Bay), Middle Bass, North Bass, and I believe, Kelly’s Island. I grew up in Columbus and every summer our family vacationed at Lake Erie. Most of the time we would boat over to the islands but a special treat was to fly over on the Fords. During that time Island Airlines also operated a Boeing 247 and some single engine Cessnas.
