This is part four where we install and wire all the control equipment. We design and build her from the ground up in a method we have wanted to try for a while geared towards reducing build time without compromising performance.
This will be a six-part series of the entire build process from design to machine testing.
Subscribe and turn on notifications, more videos to come!
Part One (DESIGN) - Model, specs, and basic design ideology of the build.
Part Two (FABRICATION) - Fitment and welding of the chassis components.
Part Three (ASSEMBLY) - Fitment of the rails and screws, assembly of all the components.
Part Four (WIRING) - Cabling, controller, and systems wiring.
Part Five (COMPLETION) - Wrapping everything up, tunning, and first moves.
Part Six (FEATURES) - Some testing, material cutting, and additional design features.
We have been using this machine for over a year, and will also include a performance review of the design.
If you would like to check out the MASSO G3 controller we used, here's MASSO's product page:

Enjoy!

Any chance you would be willing to share your cad files for all the laser cut plates to build this machine? Looks like a really nice robust and ridged design and would like to build one myself. Nice work! Thanks

Now i can appreciate a clearpath servo which requires just ONE cable from motor to controller.

I think you will be happy with the Masso control. The conversational is pretty limited, but mostly you will be using a CAM of some sort I am sure.

Yeah we have a couple of these touch units now, been using them for a year and I love them. I haven't tried the conversational, all of our code is done in CAM software.

FYI Delta B3 servos are reasonably afforable. I import quite a lot of them directly from taiwain. I like your construction method of laser/plasma cut steel and concrete.

I would definitely like to play around with some servos over these closed loop steppers. I was going to try some Teknic Clear Path units, but the costs really start adding up with cables and power supplies, and I wasn't sure the 2K was worth it for a package of those units specifically. I would be interested to know more about the Delta B3s.

@@DIVCNC 400W B3's with cable set (5m), servo motor AC servo motor (24b encoder) etc is 360 together for a whole set. Cause it is AC you don't need to mess around with DC power supplies. It also has very nice autotuning (I have short about it on my channel)

I'm very interested in knowing the make and model of the electronic hardware you're using. As I'm just starting my journey in building a CNC machine. Thank you in advance for any help.

Looking good, are all the surfaces where the linear rails go machined?
@DIVCNC
@DIVCNC Год назад
Thanks! No we specifically were trying to avoid that, with careful fabrication using laser cut plate. We had to shim under two locations about 0.005" but it was close enough that the movements just glide everywhere else with negligible deviations on the dial gauge.

It is a very nice build up, I have a Masso controller that I'm working on for my cnc router. I have a question, what software are you using at @1:35 for wiring schematics?
@DIVCNC
@DIVCNC Год назад
Hi Javier. Thanks, I drew it all out manually in adobe illustrator, nothing fancy. The Masso is awesome, definitely a good choice.

Nice machine you got there! Would you recommand the masso g3 touch for a hobby cnc ?
@DIVCNC
@DIVCNC Год назад
Thanks! I certainly would, but it may be a little pricey for some hobbyists . If you have an old computer lying around, you can do it much cheaper, however if you have to purchase a computer, buy a mach 3 license, and the controller board you are getting close to the cost of the Masso anyway. The Masso is also easier to use than mach 3, if your new to it.

Just ordered the masso touch to bring a neglected outdated pc driven machine back to life. Hasnt even been delivered yet but im trying to find as much info as I can. Loved the video but still completely over my head. Can you run thru in text the wiring im going to need just to rewire this to the masso??
@DIVCNC
@DIVCNC Год назад
Hi Jason, That depends heavily on your machine and what you are currently controlling. Simply put, you really will just need to bypass the breakout board (if it's a printer port-driven machine) and wire all that back to the Masso. It will likely be the four wires for your step and direction signals from the stepper drivers, and some 2 or 3 conductor wires back to your sensors/switches. The Masso reads high/low signals, so on any open/closed circuit, such as those with homing and end stop switches, you need to connect one end of the sensor to a power supply off the Masso board (there are a bunch of them indicate with red terminals), and the other end of the circuit to one of the unused inputs in the Masso controller. Controls for outputs work in a similar way, with the coil negative (relay coil) being wired back to the ground (-) on the Masso board, and the power to the coil will be sent through whatever output you're using on the controller. You'll have to wire and output controls through a relay because the board can only handle very low amperages. Any additional wiring for spindle controls gets a little more complicated but MASSO has some good videos on their RU-vid channel. Can you tell me more about your machine?

Hey new to the channel , very nice ... Kindly put axis accelerations on please Thank you .
@DIVCNC
@DIVCNC Год назад
Thanks! Running fairly conservative right now, 1,400mm/s2 on Z and Y, 1,000mm/s2 on the gantry movements. 15,000mm/min travel speeds.
@wiremonkeyshop
@wiremonkeyshop Год назад
You can probably up your acceleration on the Z.
@DIVCNC
@DIVCNC Год назад
Great observation, we have turned it up considerably since this, we found the limits of the Z-axis acceleration to be lower than the other two, due to the weight it has to lift.
@user-gt3xz6wo3o
@user-gt3xz6wo3o Год назад
Is this not possible with stepper motors?
@DIVCNC
@DIVCNC Год назад
Yes it is, these are steppers they are just closed loop. You could also use open loop steppers you just wont have the machine protections.
