The 2021 film Passing may have flown under the radar for many, but I happen to think it's one of the most important movies to have been released in recent years. It's the film adaptation of Nella Larsons novel of the same name, and both the book and film manage to look at racism from a genuinely unique yet crucial perspective. We, at large, understand race related issues from a very generic and often physical or material perspective, often giving less thought to the damage these issues may cause psychologically. Passing allows us to look at one of the many ways in which racism can affect someone mentally, and this video will explain exactly how it does this through its use of contrast.

Saw this in my recommended this morning but i never got notified but im sure the bell is clicked sorry Now this is how its done this is probably your best video since Menace when it comes to deep, thought provoking, informative analysis Also idc what anybody says Tessa Thompson is a baddie but her versatility as an actress is so underappreciated

I appreciate you taking the time to check it out bro! And thanks! I definitely feel like this video is one of the best I've done so far too. I was interested in the topic and next thing you know it was almost 20 minutes long..lol. But it's definitely a unique angle to explore a pretty complex and historical issue. My props to the novel and film for giving us that. ✊🏾🙏🏽 Also, I agree, Tessa Thompson is one of the more underappreciated actresses out there forsure!

Never heard of the film. To address racism so clearly never allows for a movie to become popular. Those themes and theories of the film sound great and heavy. Can't wait to give it a view. Great review!

Yeah its definitely exploring racism through a unique perspective, and for that alone, it's worth the watch. The performances and direction are just the cherry on the top. As always, I appreciate you taking the time to watch family, hope all is well. Let me know your thoughts if you give a watch ✊🏾.

Yeah it's a bit of a slower, more psychological watch, but deals with some highly interesting and important themes. Definitely worth the watch if you have time.

I'm white but my mother's grandfather chose to pass as white when he became an adult. I never met him, but going by the stories from my mom and grandmother he was a very closed off and guarded man. He taught his children to tell people they were part Native American if anyone asked and absolutely refused to let his own mom near him or his family. Apparently, one time his mom came by to see her grandchildren (my grandma and her siblings) and he met her outside and started yelling at her to leave. Grandma didn't find out that was her own grandmother until way later in life. Unfortunately I don't know anything about my great-grandfather's life or his family since my family seems to die young so there's no one left I know who knew him. But I think about what he must have experienced to make the decisions he did and live the way he did. My grandmother still had somewhat kinky hair and two of her children have dark-ish skin (think either a really tan white person or a lighter skinned Latino) but none of us even knew anyone in our family was Black til my own mom started getting really into doing that ancestry family tree stuff since we have just so little family history to pull up on her side.

Wow, what a story. I truly respect your perspective on this too. I think it would be too easy to completely resent your great grandfather. Instead, you empathize by wondering what he must have been through to make him choose to live his life this way. The world can be a cruel place, and im positive it was for many of our ancestors. Back in the day many didn't have the option to pass, but I often wonder if those who couldn't would if they had the opportunity to just to avoid the pain and discrimination? My grandfather and grandmother were an interracial couple in the late 40s (couldn't marry as it was illegal) and the treatment they both received was night and day. My dad and Aunt are both very light skinned as a result and definitely have passed before, largely due to others assuming they were white and they will both admit, it's helped them in some areas. Im not here to judge, its a messed up situation. And like I mentioned in the video, I can understand both sides. Was it really resenting blackness or simply taking advantage of your situation to give you and your family a better life? trying to survive? We may never know. The one thing we do know is that "passing" did make life easier for many on some level and I imagine it did for your great grandfather. Thank you for sharing this with me! ✊🏾

@@itakeonmovies Yes, and being so far removed from him and my own family history it's really hard to judge him by what little I have heard. Supposedly he was strict, but aside from a few shared stories my connection to him is pretty loose and I've never had to walk through the world with the same challenges as him (and, arguably, because of the decisions he made). I think it's a deeply personal decision, and one that is incredibly unfair to even have to make. For anyone mixed enough to be able to blur the lines between race, race must feel incredibly arbitrary and a bit like a performance. But to the same effect, if a system is built to be unfair then there's no reason to play fair imo.

I think the United States' obsession with labeling and their Protestant Christian history plays a HUGE role on racial issues. As a white passing latina (and latino is not a race btw) I've been accused (in the wonderful world of the Internet) of playing the minority game to get benefits out of how I'm labelling my race. This problem goes all the way back to when the Spanish and the English first arrived to America. The Spanish came here with the idea of saving souls for God (even though they mostly saw indigenous peoples as inferior, they thought of them as creatures of God), and Catholicism didn't forbid Spanish and indigenous people to have families together. The Calvinist influences in the English, however, believe in predestination, so the indigenous peoples in their eyes were already beyond saving, and it didn't matter if they were killed. That's why racism in the United States works so differently than in Central and South American countries, since the latter have the concept of mestizaje well rooted in their cultures. Great video!!!
