In this video I review one possible way to build Woljif. I will do another build to cover a two weapon version of the same party member.

Pathfinder: WOTR is an isometric single-player role-playing story game currently in development by Russian studio Owlcat Games and published by Deep Silver, based on Paizo Publishing's Pathfinder franchise. Announced through a Kickstarter campaign in February 2020, the game will be released for PC, Microsoft Windows, and macOS on September 4, 2021. In WOTR the realm of Sarkoris was destroyed when Areelu Vorlesh opened a rift to the abyssal planes of existence, and hordes of demons invaded the world of Golarion. Pathfinder has dozens of classes and subclasses with thousands of abilities, feats, spells, talents, and buffs to choose from. The spell listing allows you to choose from Evocation (Damage Dealing), Enchantment (Crowd Control), Necromancy (Undead), Abjuration (Buffs), Illusion (Crowd Control), Divination (Buffs/Disruptor), and Conjuration (Summoning). This is combined with an insane amount of class/subclass options including Alchemist, Arcanist, Barbarian, Bard, Bloodrager, Cavalier, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Hunter, Inquisitor, Kineticist, Magus, Monk, Oracle, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Shaman, Skald, Slayer, Sorcerer, Warpriest, Witch, and Wizard! It is Owlcat's goal to give each of these classes at least 5 subclasses each!
Choose your Mythic Path and embody an Angel, Demon, merciless Lich, wily Trickster, superhero Azata, law incarnate Aeon, truly evil Swarm, merciful Gold Dragon, or forgo all of them to stand alone as a Legend. Each path will allow you to improve your hero in unique ways, adding a new layer to character development and making your hero and their allies a true match for their powerful enemies.
There are more than a dozen potential party members in the game including Camellia (Half-Elf/Spirit Hunter), Seelah (Human/Paladin), Lann (Mongrel/Zen Archer), Ember (Elf/Stigmatized Witch), Arueshalae (Succubus/Espionage Expert), Woljif (Tiefling/Eldritch Scoundrel), Daeran (Aasimar/Oracle), Sosiel (Human/Cleric), Regil (Gnome/Hellknight), Wenduag (Mongrel/Fighter), Nenio (Kitsune/Scroll Savant), Greybor (Dwarf/Slayer). All of these companions have their own backgrounds, alignments, and motivations. All of them are fully voice acted with unique character models. There are even more followers that are locked behind specific story/mythic quest options!

Fantastic builds, I have subscribed because you go through the details with very easy to understand explanations. Love how your builds are very useable from the get-go and are not these ridiculous min-max builds which end up screwing you throughout your playthrough until you reach the end!

I love how long-form and in depth your videos are! I'm new to the pathfinder system with WotR, but I adore how intricate the character building is. I think this game does a poor job for some descriptions on abilities and feats, so having you go through it all with lots of detail is super helpful! It's also just incredibly fun to watch people build characters and talk about why they made certain decisions. Whenever I watch Mortismal Gaming's videos (which are still awesome, don't get me wrong), I find myself wishing he would go into more detail. Then I came across your videos and got exactly what I wanted! Plus your style and commentary on these videos is top notch! Good stuff (:

I feel like in Woljif's case, much of the value you get out of Quicken Spell you can get with the Sorcerous Reflex mythic ability. His spell levels are relatively low compared to a wizard - he only ever gets 6th level spells, meaning that he'll only ever be able to Quicken 2nd level spells - and those very late game. It just doesn't have the same value for him as it does for the full casters. Better to just get him a Quicken Rod, it'll probably do what you need it to do.

Just some general stuff: Improved Invisibility will enable sneak attack on these guys even though they arent flat fotted anymore. You will also improve your chance to hit by enabling point-blank-shot!

Also even though you get this as an ability for free as AT at 9th level I'd still recommend picking it to your spell book, for more uses.

Oo I'm copping this There's a bunch of party synergy things that can be done to insure sneak attacks pop as often as possible. I like him as a character, so this is perfect. Thank you man!

If you have a guy in the party who can demoralize targets with things like dreadful carnage or cornagoun smash so that targets get shaken status meaning they now have flat-footed AC is really good combination with this guy.

Compared to tabletop, Sneak Attack is hella easy to get in this game. Literally all you need is an enemy in melee with the target, or concealment from the target. Even with it being this easy, Woljif doesn't need anybody's help, as he can just vanish/invis/greater invis or summon a bunch of zombies to provide flanking.

I will used some knowledge learn on my main character in a second playthrough with the all trickstery arcanna road. For the moment I run a Lich/dragon disciples and Wolfie is multiclass with slayer for Mele damage but that isn't that efficient, I use what I learned here for sure! Thank you for sharing

Jus wanted to say that with weapon finesse adding dexterity to melee damage rolls using double slice adds all your dex to offhand damaga as well, even if its not stated in the in game tool tip

Double Slice works with Finesse training (Dagger) as long as you have Weapon Finesse. So as long as he is using a Dagger it doesn't matter that he has low strength, you get your additional damage from dexterity on the offhand from that feat.

I think a really cool direction to take this build would be 2 points in Arcane Archer so you can use the ranged spellstrike ability with bows

Acid Arrow and the acid cantrip are both not affected by spell resistance. Great options in the early game before you get decent spell pen.

@@SlanderedGaming This is true in the PnP game. You could probably see it by trying it in game with identical daggers and seeing if both do the same damage. It's a shame they don't break down damage like they do attacks.

@@SlanderedGaming Rogue's Finesse training gives dex to damage, but you still get the same 0.5x str (now dex) to damage on your off hand weapon, and 1.5x str (now dex) if you're using an Elven Curved blade. Double Slice changes the off hand damage from 0.5x str to to 1x str to damage. This sticks around when Finesse Training replaces str with dex.

@@SlanderedGaming essentially it's on the finess training and other feats that allow to use your dex as dmg stat instead of str. The abridged version is like "Where it reads STR for damage, reads DEX instead."

It's fairly quick to verify, since wotr shows the damage for your weapons in the inventory screen: equip identical daggers in both hands. You should see that the damage is identical, thanks to double slice. Having weapon finesse but not double slice, you should see reduced damage in the offhand.

Wolfjie is one of the hardest companions to build. Followed by Camellia and Lang. I personally do not like arcane trickster as it’s not viable above core without a lot of rng none sense. Here is how I build him. 1) don’t ever upgrade arcane trickster or use his magic- it’s trash beyond using self buffs 2) train him in 14 magus for Spell combat for dimensional strike stacking with his sneak attack 3) train him 1 in sorc for bloodline [celestial] + mythic bloodline 4) take 1 as hex witch for evil eye or ice plant 5) take the rest in divine hunter for the infinite buffs each fight. Mythic abilities: 1) last stand 2) elemental barrage [triggered by magus enchants on weapons] 3) mythic weapons 4) rupture restraints 5) hammer the gap 6-10) what ever

Gah, the hot bars!!! 😂 You can open up the hotbars on the left, and put all your toggles on them, and then put your rays in order by level, so pressing 2 for base, 3 for 3rd level, 4 for 4th, etc. etc. Streamlines the process of using the spells. Anything that's purely situational can be cast from the book, as it were, and you can clean up what's on the bars. As I said, it's just to streamline the process. Nice build though.

I found some blog that suggested going straight into Vivisectionist Alchemist. It's a pretty good build still, but I forgot all about Arcane Trickster. I should respec him.

No a respec just takes him back to the same level he was at when you got him.

This is a great example of Owlcat tripping up in companion design. Giving us an eldritch trickster for our rogue defies conventions, the character is interesting and he really can be built to melee or cast… so why lock in the feats they did?

There should be a way of completely resetting your companions, maybe getting locked in their class (but not the archetype) or not even so, I'd like to make him a full rogue, I'm stuck making him a vivisectionist right now thanks for how owlcat designed him.

Woljif starting build is missing a lot of the feats that help with ray touch attacks so I feel like magic missile works better. Long term I agree that snowball is probably superior.

I respec'd Wenduag to a fighter/assassin. So Woljif's main job in combat is to cast Greater Invisibility on her and then himself and then they just sneak attack everyone.

I'm curious to try it out. What builds do you think work well on mercenaries? I created a merc and built him as a 2-handed weapon wielding dwarf, but i'm not sure what builds are best for characters which you can totally customize like the mercenaries.

I really like the idea of a lvl 20 brown fur transmuter merc. They are able to cast amazing buffs that aren't possible otherwise.

Sylvan Sorcerer is always a good Pathfinder merc. Even at low levels, when casters suffer, you have a pet to wreck shop with. You get some unique spells from the Fae heritage. And high level sorcerers can break through almost any spell resistance.

I have one idea. Make a Cleric of Desna. Get Travel and you have 3 great choices for the second domain. Good, Liberation or Luck. You can either go full 20 as Cleric, but make sure to then grab heavy armor proficiency. Or you can go 4 levels of Fighter to get that for free plus weapon specialization at level 4. Travel domain gets you access to dimension door plus fly at level 3 (insane).

What you are doing here is making him in to a worse Octavia from the last game. Which is not bad but it does remove his strengths. Personally I'd recommend using him as a self-buffing melee flank tank, to help flank with your tank tank and then sneak attack the big bad evil guy (BBEG), maybe toss in a trip and dirty trick or two. And when you manage to get to Arcane trickster 10 you can start using fireballs and the like to make a mess of things when the opportunity arises, going back to melee when out of spells. Here is a question for you tho: Can acid cloud sneak attack? And if so what about persistent spells? Once a turn, all the time, or once on the first spell cast only? These are the things that keep me up at night xD

Agreed about tanking probably being the better way to go which is why I made this build: studio.ru-vid.comY4nNtni4ynQ/edit To Sneak Attack you have to do a touch attack right? Therefore I would say Acid Could cannot do it along with spells that can be persistent.

Is it worth it to go Weapon focus: Ray -> Dazzling display -> Shatter defenses? MC is a fearsome leader cavalier (Glorfindel) that will go with dreadful carnage.

Shatter Defenses is always worth it and you should always have someone causing fear in every fight.

Personally, I think arcane trickster is a pretty suboptimal class for an eldritch scoundrel. The arcane trickster is balanced around the assumption you are gaining the spell progression of a full arcane spell caster, whose levels offer them no sneak attack progression, half BAB, and pretty limited class features. For an eldritch scoundrel, you get only hybrid spellcaster progression, a moderate increase in sneak attack die as you already have some baseline progression, a loss to AB progression, and a loss of some very powerful class features. Advanced rogue talents like opportunist and double debilitation are very good, and the progression you get to AB and debilitating strikes is very important. Whereas a pure eldritch scoundrel will debuff an enemies AC by -8 at level 16 and have a BAB of 12, an arcane trickster at the same level will be only -4 AC, on top of having BAB of 9. 7 lower effective AB is absolutely huge, its a 35% reduction in the chance to hit. If the pure eldritch scoundrel would hit 50% of the time on his primary attack, the arcane trickster will hit a measly 15% of the time. He will also have 3 fewer attacks per round when accounting for opportunist and greater two weapon fighting. You also be limited to only ever using daggers, whereas the pure eldritch scoundrel gets 3 weapon picks for finesse training. Getting at least 1 more weapon choice is a big deal. The pure eldritch scoundrel is so much more likely to hit, and has so many more attacks, that even with a moderately slower sneak attack progression, they will do way more damage overall. And make no mistake, with the eldritch scoundrel spell book, your best bet is to buff up and melee your enemies, not offensive spells. Unless you invest into intelligence and a bunch of spell casting feats, you wont get much mileage at all out of surprise spells (and that will be at the expense of being effective in melee), and all the other features are pretty marginal. They get a lot less out of arcane trickster, and lose a lot more, compared to a wizard. So I would say keep the eldritch scoundrel pure.

This is true if you are going the melee route. For that build I only dip once into Arcane Trickster. But for a spell casting route, which this build is, I don't believe you lose much going into Arcane Trickster..

@@SlanderedGaming You dont lose much from taking arcane trickster if you play the scoundrel as an offensive spell caster its true, its just that eldritch scoundrels are poor offensive casters. If you are going that route, a wizard is clearly a better choice. But I appreciate you cannot change that Woljif starts as a level 3 eldritch scoundrel. Have you considered giving Nenio 1 level of rogue, taking accomplished sneak attacker, and level her as a trickster?

Yeah, I kind of agree. I think Nenio would be the better option for AT. Or even better, the MC, since sneak attacks can proc off of Mythic spells for insane damage. I will say, though, that AB progression isn't that big of a deal, as ATs want to be targeting touch AC, which is surprisingly low for enemies across the board. With a dip into Vivisectionist for Mutagen (Dex), ATs shouldn't have much trouble with accuracy.

Doesnt Double Slize work with DEX if you have DEX to DMG? It would add your STR but now it adds DEX instead, pretty sure someone said this but I haven't checked. While I think this is a very good build, I also think there are three good reasons not to go Arcane Trickster for him. 1. You will loose Bewildering Injury upgrades, this will be -8 AC at lvl 16. This is an incredible skill. 2. He is only a lvl 6 caster, usually you want a full caster for Arcane Trickster. 3. He can cast ray attacks very well without going into Arcane Trickster or precise shot, since his to hit is so high with his DEX and it is against touch AC.

The thing with Woljif (and also Daeran) that some people miss is he starts off an intolerable little turd on purpose. He actually has a character arc, and grows into a better person as you travel with him, rather than ending more or less the same way he started like many CRPG companions.

@@rwulf No, I know. They're actually great characters. (I did my beta run with Daeran - now I have Ember in the slot I had him in but I miss him too). Both are actually great characters, I was just joking is all. But I know some people seriously dislike them - you're right tho that they just haven't seen their story and their personality unfold. I actually don't think I *truly* dislike any of the companions in this game.

Ember is top 3 for sure. I'll have a build coming out in the next week for her. You can use her as a healer, fire mage, debuffer, buffer, or a combination of it all.

Don't worry about her =4 to hit, it only applies to weapons (not spells), and Ember should only be using a weapon when she literally has nothing better to do (which is rare).

For him I like to go 3 levels of his rogue class, 3 levels of wizard - universalist (to unlock AT). Get all levels of AT and then complete till 20 as a wizard again. I like weapon focus touch (for ray spells like scorching ray) plus touch spells like vampiric touch. You really don't need to improve his attack with weapons by getting weapon focus for daggers or whatnot (not for spell casting Woljif). Instead focus on spell casting feats and get the mandatory point-blank shot and precise shot. Edit: Also here because I take levels as wizard I can copy scrolls to my spellbook. And as a Universalist I can copy every spell, no spell is unavailable due to opposite school. Another thing. At level 6 I'd say Disintegrate is the most powerful, because it is a ray spell which Woljif specializes in. There are other great ray spells, like Enervate at level 4. I'd say focus on getting most of them.

@@SlanderedGaming If you look at spells that have "close range" those are the spells you want to look at because they are cast within 30 feet, and have to be touch attacks.

No problem at all I am happy to help. Some spells become more powerful as your Caster Level increases. So for example when you first get Scorching Ray at spell level 2 it will only shoot one ray. But in this video because my Caster Level is higher that same spell will shoot multiple rays. Hellfire Ray is another example of a power that works like that.

@@Sup3riorr My pleasure. Spells are limited use abilities. For Woljif how many slots he has of that spell determines how many times he can cast it. You have to rest in order to regain slots that you have used. It works that way for Wizards where as Sorceror's automatically fill their slots with all the spells that they have learned. There are pro's and cons to both styles.

Just a warning: arcane trickster drops your base attack to wizard levels, and rogues already have enough trouble connecting with attacks. If you really want to do a melee Woljif, just stay in Scoundrel and take Accomplished Sneak Attacker. Especially considering that Arcane Trickster boosts the caster progression of the base class - while a wizard/rogue multiclass gets a lot out of this (wizard progression) his base class is Scoundrel, which has a relatively crap spell progression, so you are really gaining nothing but slightly faster sneak attack at the cost of *irreplaceable* base attack bonus. As for Ranged Legerdemain, it's fun in tabletop, but totally unnecessary in this game. Almost all traps can be reached very easily if you just turn invisible or, like, just facetank them with Communal Resist Elements.

And if you really want to do a caster Wolfif... just play Nenio and multiclass her in Rogue/Trickster, she'll do it better. It helps if you consider Eldritch Scoundrel an alternative to Arcane Trickster - it was created for the tabletop when Paizo started to step away from the 3.0 D&D idea of Prestige Classes (which honestly never really worked that well except for abusive powergaming combos) to fill that Arcane Trickster niche. Combining them is not really ideal.

Communal Resist Elements only works against traps if you know what kind of elemental damage they deal and most times you won't. Agreed that Woljif works better sticking with Scoundrel as a melee character but I enjoy having another caster in the group sometimes. Cool history note about why Eldritch Scoundrel was created. I didn't know Prestige classes essentially came from D&D.

pretty sure double slice + finesse training lets you give him his dex bonus on offhand weapon dmg instead of strength. Still not great if you want him as a caster.

Something I feel the need to point out. Reach does NOT affect spells with a range longer than melee touch. i.e. you're using a metamagic which has no effect save to boost the level of the spell to use in higher slots. I'd also like to remind you that there are metamagic rods to accomplish the exact same thing which don't require higher spell slots, or feats. i.e. the devouring lust which maximizes a spell and turns it into unholy damage (or applies dominate but this version is better for blasters). Or the Grandmaster Rod which maximizes and empowers. Edit: also, taking a look at the gear. You're doing fire damage, so why doesn't Woljiff have the Mallander Linds insult belt? (extra unholy damage on fire spells) and the ring of pyromania (arsinoe) which does extra fire damage on fire spells? Why bring Woljiff if Ember does what he does but better?

Reach is supposed to work on all spells except the ones with the max range. Is that a bug?

pretty sure it is, yeah. It should boost to a longer range, but even then its basically a wasted feat since most engagements occur at short ranges (hello melee mosh pit) and so you're using a metamagic to boost the range for a spell which is already fully capable of reaching the target in 90% of all cases. And when its not... there are plenty of other tools to move you a good distance to get into range, and the base spell as a cast time of standard action so you can move your standard 30ft and still cast the base spell (scorching or hellfire) as well as add on the quickened spell at the end of the turn for extra single target damage.

I somewhat disagree on ranged legerdemain, sure it sounds convenient and usefull,but... The DC for traps and locks grows significantly throughout the game, adding +5 to it, unless you want to save scum, is not that great. On top of that Woljif is not that good in trickery ( Camelia overtakes him without effort, many others can be at least comparable if not better).

Replying to myself instead of edit for the sake of algorithm. Great way to showcase a build, you explain everything clearly and show how it works in action. The only additional thing I would like to see in the future (being an entitled, demanding son of a gun ;P ), would be a spreadsheet (either at the end of a video, in the description or whatever format convenient). As far as the build itself, doing something to up his will resistance could be usefull, there's a lot of aoe attacks that could scare him etc.

Thank you! Glad you are enjoying the content. I will be updating all of my new builds with spreadsheets this weekend along with cleaning up the playlists. I mention in the guide you definitely want to get an item that helps to buff Woljif's trickery skill. Looking back it might be worth it to get a Skill Focus in Trickery as well to boost it further. Will resistance I am not worried about because you should be casting buffs that up his saves and help protect against those attacks.

Dont like woljif as trickster not cause its bad , but just cause nenio does it better so xD . Nenio has actually somewhat useful feats and since she is ranged she will get point blanc anyway
