This is part 1 of 3 of my new Paulk Smart Bench Build series. In this video, I lay out the router patterns and assemble. In part 2 I show you my custom mobile base and the included sawhorses. In part three I show you an overview of the bench and how I use it in my workflow and workshop.
You can view all the videos on my Paulk Style Workbenches here: • Paulk Smart Workbench ...

The Paulk Smart Workbench designed by Ron Paulk at thesmartwoodshop.com/ has been my go-to workbench for the last 5 years. Over those years I've at times moved away from using the Paulk Style Workbenches and Miter Saw Stations but eventually go back to using them for their advantages.
Those advantages are:
It's a stable workbench design that doesn't sag.
It's a portable, lightweight workbench that one person can set up and move easily
It's a strong workbench that can easily support a person.
It's an easily customizable workbench that can serve in many roles in any size shop.
I'll be setting up this workbench to serve primarily as my dedicated Track Saw Table. This bench has already become the centerpiece of my shop.

Ron's Assembly Spacer had me confused. I couldn't figure out what it was used for. But seeing your video showed me where and why it's useful. Thanks for that! Still not quite sure why he insists on the spacer being built from 3/4" (18mm) and not 1/2" (12mm), but whatever.

Great video thanks, how heavy is it? Do think making the hole thing in 1/2”ply would be strong enough, adding 1/4” strips in the dog holes locations? Thanks for the content great channel

Paulk say you still need the top in 3/4". 1/2" is less than half the strength, and 1/3rd the stiffness. He uses some unobtanium brand of light weight plywood.

Good video. I'm planning to build the Paulk bench top and put a mobile base under it similar to yours. I'm wondering what method did you use to bore the bench dog holes? Did you use the Parf system or design your own?
@DaileyWoodworks

I bought and used the Parf-Guide it's a good system. But MAN! is it time consuming. Next time I'm going to pay my local CNC shop to do it. They said $150 plus whatever the plywood cost

Just downloaded the PSB plans. The one bit I can’t find (and it might well be there somewhere) is what size guide bushing and router cutter these are designed for? Obviously that’s massively important or everything’s going to be off..

I used a 1/4” bit and a 3/8” OD bushing. Hope this helps
@MichaelBrown-kk6ck

It's flexible. What matters is the difference between bit size and bushing OD. Result is the same except for the radius of the corners cut out by the router.

Have you put any thought into whether to add microjig matchfit dovetail tracks into your PSB top?
@DaileyWoodworks

I’ve thought about it but don’t feel it necessary

@@DaileyWoodworks Another quick question. Im trying to decide whether to go 18mm holes or 20mm holes. Do you know why Ron perfers 20mm besides festool accessories?

@@NathanBilbao Industry standard since after WW2.

"These are in metric, but are like 34 American." Too funny.
