This is the companion video for the Paulk Smart Station Plans to help the construction process go a little easier. Chris took the material list from the plans and created a page at the Smart Woodshop web site with links to everything you need. Make some sawdust and build things. Have a great day and thanks for supporting The Smart Woodshop.

It would be nice that when the miter saw isn't being utilized, to cover up the hole so that way the whole bench surface can be utilized for something else while maintaining bench dog indexing. Lots of us home woodworkers only have enough room for one smart bench so this would be awesome for space saving. Great work Ron! Regards from San Diego.

I eventually did this with the older model total station, the piece that I cut out, I made blocks and attached it to both pieces from the underside. My miter station lives on the wall bench, havnt had a need to move it back to the total station yet .. nice thinking that it’s available if you need it

Ron, I have Purchased the Plans for the Smart Bench and Smart station, just ordered all of my hardware and I plan to build them over the Holiday break. I'm looking forward to having them improve my efficiency and enjoyment of my wood working. I get a ton of value out of your videos and just wanted to say thank you for all the work you've done both with your videos and bench designs.

Ron, just for those that are interested, Axminster in the UK sell UJK PARF ANCHOR DOGS - M8 (PAIR) for U$14/pair plus shipping. UJK have been making these anchors for some time. Axminster ship globally. I see TSO finally are marketing their smart connect but I bought UJK's like product some time ago. Does the same thing and works very well on my Paulk smart benches. Just an FYI.

Note for viewers making the sawhorses - you’ll probably want to add the smart kart eventually and they require modification that you might as well do up front: - cut out in the feet is 10mm deeper so that the saw horses touch the ground when nested inside the kart. - the feet are narrower so they fit in the kart. These are noted in the smart kart plans and also the corresponding build video around 12m40s of that video. Lots of comments there about the sawhorse modifications 😅. Thought I’d help Ron out if he doesn’t have time to update the plans since y’all are following this same progression (bench or station -> kart -> cradles)

Thank you for pointing this out, Jacob. As someone who recently purchased the plans, I think it's lame that Ron seems not to care enough about his "fam" (as he like to calls his customers) to revise the plans.

Dang! Now I’m going to have to buy another set of plans!!! Another great bench! A couple of ideas... you could use 1/4-20 toilet bolts to hold down the miter extensions and the flip stops. Some thin rare earth magnets would allow you to store the story boards under the front overhang of the extension boards.. always at your fingertips.

Hey Ron, I wonder if there might be an advantage to adding 20mm dowels to your sacrificial strips to secure them on the PSS & PSB (so they can't move while cutting [even if that's rare]; or maybe even for storage?). Maybe you could even still nest them together in the same footprint (height-wise) by staggering out 20mm holes that would also interlock them together. Just a thought.

My idea is to make a modification so that I can put a panel in place where it aligns with the top surface. What do you think?

Good morning I have the smart bench plans and am building that. I purchased the PSS plans after watching this video. I think I want the sides to be the same when I build the PSS. I have a guestion about the dado in parts 5 & 6. You show a dimension of 90mm. This seems to be a critical dimension to fit the miter saw. Is the height of the table on the Festool this 90mm? I have a different brand to fit into the bench. Thanks for your hard work to make it easy on the rest of us
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop 3 года назад
Tom Carson hey Tom, the Kapex is one of the tallest at 120mm. You could move the dados up or leave them as designed and rip a pair of shims to mount your saw placing the between your saw and base. I am planning on doing the latter with my Dewalt as it is only 90mm to preserve maximum option in the future and allowing me to use my PSS for both saws.

Hey, Ron! I'm a big fan of your work and a repeat customer. I had a question about using the PSS with your table saw. It looks like the miter extensions and the bench extenders bring the surface of the bench up to the height of the saw at 36". What is the plan for the table saw miter slots? How do you manipulate the bench when using the miter gage or a cross cut sled on the table saw?
@TheSmartWoodshop

currently, I move the table saw back from the bench for clearance. When I get the bench extenders figured out, I will add dados to accommodate the slots.

I have been having difficulty finding metric router bushings. The set I bought is imperial and the one I am looking to use is 9/32" ID an 3/8" OD. Using a 1/4" cutter that leaves a 1/32" tolerance 1/64" each side cutter to bushing. Is that too close tolerance? Other bushings in the set are:11/32" ID 7/16" OD, 13/32 ID, 1/2" OD, 17/32" ID 5/8" OD, 5/8" ID 3/4" OD, 21/32" ID 51/64"OD. Any suggestions on which bushing would be helpful.
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop Год назад
Most of my bits and bushings are imperial as that is what is available in the US. When I use ¼" I use a ⅜" bushing. When I use ½" I use ⅝" busing. These are all OD dimensions. Then I pretend they are metric. The ⅛" difference converts nicely to 3mm. Your cut will grow on outside cuts by 1.5mm and shrink by 1.5mm on inside cuts. This is all easy stuff, but best to grab some scrap and make cuts to get a good feel for it. Don't over think it. Hope this helps.

Hey Mike. Here is a link. The Parf Guide Mk2 is in high demand and only back-ordered right now. The manufacturer is in Germany and running extra shifts to catch up. Place your order or select "notify me." When I upgraded from the Mk1 to Mk2, I got on a waiting list, but it showed up and was worth the wait. There is no other option on the market that competes with the accuracy that the Parf offers. TSO is an affiliate so they give us a % when orders are placed. If you are not comfortable with that, then you can search TSO on google and go straight to their site without using our affiliate link. In the past, Ron had partnered with FastCap to sell these benches, but was hard to make to profitable, so no more. I am building mine now, lots of mistakes, so learning a lot, great experience. If you really don’t want the trouble of making it, you could find a local wood CNC shop. But that route probably sounds easier than it really is. There’s lots of ways to shortcut this build if you want. I’m realizing this as I am building it.

I think plywood with that thickness is not strong enough to avoid that the holes are getting bigger over time
@evadkin
@evadkin 3 года назад
Ron, could you please explain the flipstops, I am still confused. You say you measure from the body of the flipstop, but when you fold the flipstop down and place the material against it, you are off the thickness of the fold down part of the flipstop, that being 18mm. I am confused on that little detail.
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop 3 года назад
The tape position is set to the flip stop body. The flip stop or material contact point is adjustable for accuracy. If the tape were calibrated to the flip stop itself, you would be stuck with the placement of the tape. This would make it impossible to get an accurate cut.
@evadkin
@evadkin 3 года назад
@@TheSmartWoodshop I am still confused, say you want to make a 200mm cut, you place the material against the material contact point aka the flipstop, so where are you measuring the 200mm from to make the cut, from body of flipstop to saw blade or from material contact point aka flipstop? My confusion is when you place your board against the material contact point aka flipstop, yet your measuring supposedly from the body of the flipstop, to me it seems your cut is not going to be 200mm due to the thickness of the material contact point aka the flipstop.
@bpmunroe
@bpmunroe 3 года назад
Dave King I believe that the zero on the tape is offset from the blade to account for that. That is, 200mm on the tape is not 200mm from the blade, but rather 200mm plus whatever the flipstop offset is.
@evadkin

Hey Ron, I noticed on the plan the miter saw base is 708mm wide and the dado slot it nests into on the bench is effectively 712mm wide (via 696 plus two 8mm dados). To me, this equates to 4m or approximately 1/8"+ of total play between the saw base and its nested spot in the L/R lateral direction. I understand you probably intentionally designed a little room in there so that base will slide in there nice and not bind up. My question then is, do you calibrate your stops each time you set up the stand and the saw after locking the cam? Or maybe just make sure the saw is centered in that gap before locking the saw down? How do you reconcile that play so it's not an issue for you? It seems like you just pop that saw in there, lock it down, and away you go but I know you wouldn't leave a wild 1/8th to float around in your work if that saw happens to get set all the way to one side or the other. You're the man, thanks Ron!
@idgara007
@idgara007 3 года назад
Honestly, i think like Ron shows, just make the board to fit after you glue up the bench frame itself. My mitre base came out to be i believe around 709 or 710, but made it 1mm wider then kept slimming down slightly till it fit snugly. Since like you said, it should not have any play.
