I use a Mossberg 590S, Suppressed Honey Badger SBR, and a LTT 92G Elite for home defense. I use a Glock 45 MOS as concealed or open carry and a CMMG Dissent MkG 9mm as a car and backpack gun. I keep 3 33 round mags an one 17 in the Glock on me. So I think I’m set.
Love how down to earth Chris is. So many RU-vidrs recommend set ups that are several thousand dollars. Meanwhile Chris is being real about the MCX costing as much as a used car 😂
The price of CZ Scorpion 3+ is 700-800 now. It’s literally military/police/intellige agencies proven. Even if I had the money am not buying. 3000-4000 dollar weapon.
I like that you put the qualifier, "You should know how to store a gun properly in your vehicle already." That brings up a good point. I think many, if not all of us, know how to properly store a firearm, but I do know that there are many new gun owners out here today. As a reminder to all of us to stay diligent, to avoid complacency, and to teach those who may be new, I think a safety video series would be helpful to the community as a whole. Education from someone who has an established presence, such as yourself or other longtime guntubers, may contribute a great benefit to the gun community and our image.
I agree. What came to my mind immediately was something like a PDW sized option in a vehicle. Short of actually physically bolting in some sort of low-profile safe/lockable storage, it feels like you're asking for trouble. A handgun can at least be stored in either a console safe or something less permanent like a biometric safe cabled to the seat frame or something like that. And every one of options is still gone as soon as someone shows up with bolt cutters or a sawzall, but it'll at least stop the smash & grab people, which is worth a lot.
Excellent - especially for people who find using a pistol challenging or may perceive it to be an issue under a stressful situation unfortunately. Low recoil impulse, and with proper training it'll be easier to control and manipulate when you have to use it.
There are a lot of firearms channels on RU-vid these days, but I really like your style. I’ve been watching your stuff for a while, and I’m just subscribing now. Keep making good content. 👍
"...if you train with this, it can be super, super lethal, and super effective." I feel like this applies to any gun. It doesn't matter if you have a Hi-Point or a Staccato. Doesn't matter if you have a Maverick 88 or an M1014. Just make sure that whatever you have, you train with it.
I added the FPC for this exact purpose. Closing in on a 1000 rounds and not a single failure to feed or fire. added primary arms 1x Prism, O light Odin Mini GL and I feel very confident and accurate with it.
I’ve changed to the CMMG dissent line of pdw. I’ve got a 9mm, 300 blk out, 6 arc does have a 16 inch barrel. I like where everything is at on them. Big fan of a forward charging handle.
I got a Keltec sub2k for a crazy deal (and also a $100 rebate). Threw a Midwest industries foldable red dot mount and a sig Romeo on it. Takes the same glock 19 mags I have in bulk for my MR920 and folds up small enough to be in my truck with me or in a duffel bag when I go on a trip that doesn’t involve flying anywhere. Nothing fancy, but gets the job done and the mag compatibility is great. I’m by far more “surgical” with a shotgun than any other platform, so I may need to grab a shockwave to play this role as well.
I carry a full size handgun (M9A4) and treat that as my main home defense firearm as well. 3 18rd mags +1 in the chamer at all times feels like more than enough for 99% of situations that could happen to me as a citizen. I can make hits with it out to 100-150yds so I personally dont have a need for a PDW, but i can see why some people would be much more comfortable with that over a handgun.
I have been appendix carrying our newest PDW prototype for the last month or so. We also have a coming system to allow one to conceal carry the Raider on ones person, based off the shoulder rig I used to carry my Raider with. PDW on body that isn’t cumbersome and can be deployed as fast as a handgun is king.
@@ThatOneGuyGreggers I wish they'd do the normal flux with the ZEV SCU because that uses glock mags. Also can't wait for the 10mm version. I'll buy 2 so I can have a 45 version as a dedicated suppressor host
In my opinion, "PDW" is more a use case than a type of weapon. And right as I wrote that H. O. Said basically the same thing 😂 I guess that is why this is one of my favourite places to get actual information about new guns!
I rock the ARV it’s a 9mm ar platform reliable and best of all it takes scorpion mags super fun with an frt or a lightning link…. Great content as usual
I have a keltec sub 2000 and love it. But my go to now is my Glock 19 and the non NFA USA One Shot pistol brace. It’s deployed in seconds. I used raised tritium sights and white light. Another great option would be a light laser or the new meprolite illuminated sight and white light.
Keltec is the overall smallest and lightest backpack folding carbine. I like the Olight green laser designator/flashlight, have several of them on pistols and carbines.
Did you know you can 3D print those supports for a lot less money. Look up Glock 19 pistol support stock. It prints in two pieces that are screwed together. It's also customizable. You can put words off your choice on the sides of it.
I bought a S&W FPC recently and friggan love it. Along with the Shadow 2 I also just impulse bought, glad I found this channel so I don't have buyers remorse lolol
I actually have an AR 'pistol' in 300 Blackout. Was going to use it for a household defense weapon, save the PDW stuff for a big pistol like my Canik Mete SFX. Hope to get a silencer (with subs, yes) for the AR pistol so I won't deafen myself if I have to use it indoors.
I'm glad you mentioned the fear factor when it comes to a larger weapon. I remember when i was a kid, i was talking to a cop and he was telling me that he only left his shotgun tube half loaded and when he would get out of his car he would load one shell and pump it because that movement and sound got people to stop being stupid really quick.
Good video premise for those on the fence. 100% agree with the intimidation factor as a real thing. That being said, I see PDW's/bag as impractical for carry in 99% of real life scenarios. The risk to reward math doesn't add up.
WOW! Love all your videos. But this is the best PDW video I have seen!! A sling bag makes a good edc bag with the advantage of being able to hold and deploy a PDW. I've had a Keltec Sub2000 that takes Beretta 92 magazines for a decade. People like to disparage Keltecs but this gun gets the job done. After seeing your test on the new S&W, it's on my Christmas list as I already have several M&Ps. If SCOTUS would rule against the ATF brace ban and perhaps SBRs the options would be a lot wider. Thanks!
I have a S2K and the EXTAR EP9, both of which fills the PDW need at home. Though, given how awful my S2K performed and ran, it stays locked and stored while the EP9 is on standby. Then again, Chris did mention that a PDW can be anything that you train with that can get the job done.
There’s 2 setups I run for a PDW. My cmmg 10mm and my MCK chassis for my Glock. Super happy with them. Been reliable so far. I love these videos thank you for the content!
Honest Outlaw, you are the truth Bro! Your videos, reviews and commentary are always so informative, insightful and useful. Peace and blessings to you, stay safe and have a great new year!

This doesn't replace a PDW, but I keep a 1Shot pistol brace in my door well. It's fast to deploy and fits almost any modern pistol. Just wanted to throw that out there. Chris, you might want to consider doing a video on this topic.
The sub 2000 is a little big and heavy for the grocery store. I carry Ruger lcp 2 always. The Glock g22 comes with anywhere historically that a mass shooting has happened. Grocery store. Mall. Movie theater. Religious gathering. Hotels. A large handgun also comes with for Suzy's soccer game, big parking lots, and outdoorsing. Unfortunately we can't protect anyone behind metal detectors, at hospitals schools concerts and stadiums.
Not saying this is life changing. But a factor with 300blk is barrel length n twist rate n if you ever plan on suppression. I had to change barrels because a 10.5 1/8 twist wasn't doing it for me. 10.3 n 1/7 suddenly was the sweet spot for me. Moa with 110 vmax n 200 grainers. That's a good life. Quiet or loud, suppressor or bird cage. Spent $1000 on trigger, scope, new barrel, n upper/lower... Worth it to me. Useful in the deer blind and at range n home.
I was going to mention the same thing; in my case the larger frame Glock goes in my MCK and makes an excellent PDW option. Takes all the usual Glock stuff.
If you're a rebel, check out the recover tactical 20/20 chassis kit for a 9mm glock. Get the top rail and throw on a red dot and thank me later. It's not as compact as a flux raider, but it's also not as expensive and doesn't require a Sig. You can even put a PSA Dagger in the 2020 and use the cash saved for an optic.
I used to be a PCC guy. However once I built a 300 blackout I never looked back. Far less recoil than a blowback and delayed blowback PCCs, perform well in short barrels, supers around 3x the muzzle energy, superior ballistics, subs have similar performance as a 45 ACP but with better sectional density and suppress well. Anyone thinking about a pdw 300 BO is the way.
I know you're having ear issues but it would be cool if you could line up some 10mm PCC's for review soon.. lots of cool stuff coming out recently in 10 and 10 is neat for PCC!
Dude, I swear your videos read my freaking mind somehow. I’ll be looking at something and bam, a day or two later, the thing I was thinking about is posted by you! In this case, 6 hours ago, lol!
I bought my shockwave more or less because it was cool, however i felt the need to justify owning it and found that on road trips or camping it fits in my spare tire well with the tool kit and i drive an econobox car so it serves its purpose but definitely recommend training with it like you said
You are awesome, and I love your videos! I live in western Nebraska, and Nebraska just became a constitutional carry state and I want to get a sub compact handgun for concealed carry. I’m a handicap 33 year old man and I am seriously looking at a Canik TP-9. My whole life I’ve been right handed and right eye dominant but I had strokes and lost vision in my right eye so now I’m learning to be left handed and shoot with my left eye. Again your videos are awesome and thank you for making them!
Planning to make my first firearms purchase this winter and I'm leaning heavily towards M&P9 (Compact) + FPC. I'm tall enough that I know the FPC would be easily concealed in its folded configuration. Not a bad combo for around $1000 before tax.
That sounds like a very smart place to start. 👍 Covering a lot of ground (i.e. use cases) in a very compact, proven platform. And, for a moderate price? Hell yeah. 👍
You have a great pairing there, as they'll take the same mags with each other. Not to mention, I'd say the S&W FPC is probably a better iteration of the folding action of the S2K. Also, since it is the holidays, plenty of deals to be had right now 👍
Always liked this class of weapon. I’m definitely on a budget and went with a nak 9. Takes glock mags that pairs with my dagger, fits in a backpack or under a coat, and is ultra reliable. Long term durability is in question but its been 100% reliable over the 7-8 hundred rounds I pumped through it. For what I payed its been nothing short of awesome. Surplus uzi mags work great for glock sticks too in case anyone needed an idea.
Full size PCCs have never made much sense to me, other than as a range toy/competition piece. If you're going to have something as big and as heavy as a rifle, it may as well be chambered in a rifle caliber. But where PCCs can really shine are in compact packages much smaller/lighter than a rifle.
I agree, but in states with strict gun laws it easier to get 16inch PCCs. Im building a full size 16inch PCC because i live in NY state, and in an apartment where my full size ar15 has too much penetratration. The wait for a pistol permit is up to a year in some counties of ny state. Yeah, its not ideal but its what I have to work with.
@@notjimmy6822 Yup, unfortunately sometimes our choices are dictated for us, and you happen to live in a state that is extremely restrictive. Godspeed. 👊
If the magazine is located inside the grip, you shorten the overall length of a 16" gun by almost 6". Ie you now have the OAL of a 10" in standard configuration.
How are you missing inside 15 yards. Use frangible ammo in your AR. Pistol rounds are inferior to rifle rounds and when your life is on the line, I’d take every advantage possible.
The M1 Carbine was the original PDW and was pretty universal rather than specific in its application. If you are not front line infantry, and need a defensive weapon, use an M1 carbine. The PDW should be a shoulder weapon to reduce the skill level required. The 80 year old, steel and wood M1 carbine makes a useful benchmark. If your PDW choice is bigger, heavier, harder to rack, hrder to shoot or takes weaker ammunution, these are negative strikes.
@@gamerbg294they also made artillery carbine from it, fun fact first smg mp18 snail magazine was belong to that luger as it was most available high capacity magazine for the German and you could use standard luger magazine on mp 18
The M1 carbine also doesn't look like a modern weapon. It would be a pretty good choice for an overtly-carried PDW in a rural/hunting community because it looks like an old deer gun, not a fighting rifle. A dude running around in full kit with an AR is a red flag. A dude running around in a flannel, trucker hat, and blue jeans with an M1 carbine is just the neighbor checking for pests. Optics are important and an M1 carbine is still highly capable despite its age and appearance.
Thanks for your contributions, sir. Invaluable info for new gun owners. It would be awesome if you could do a review of your spear lt 9" 300 blk pdw setup. Which ammo do you recommend for this setup? I've been told MCX is a bit gassy but suppressed w trash panda works well 200-220 gr subsonic ammo.
Obviously varies by state, but you have to be careful sticking a rifle or shotgun in a bag or loaded in your vehicle, in Michigan that will catch you a felony if you have a CPL or not. AR pistol is fine, AR rifle is suddenly a felony.
Hi Chris, you have a lot of followers from CA, we love to see the old guns we have reviewed such as the SF 1911, 9mm, the Cz 75 SP-01, the SF XD, 9&45, We also have the CA made Juggenault rifles too.
12" Draco and I know people think they are stupid but they are milspec and are used around the world (same as the short Zastava 10") a good folding brace and rivet in a side rail with small prism and a powerful small led flashlight with some pic rail between the handguard, with a brace that folds to the right and clears the safety and charging handle, it's a small and powerful package as compared to a full sized AK you don't loose much velocity, as for ammo you could get decent defensive soft or hollow point (some russian HP ammo is awful some is great) and usually the same cost in bulk that used to be 20c a round or less, I would always go for barnual or vympel laqure coated sealed ammo, I found the best defensive ammo was just to pull a FMJ round and use hornady red tip. Never had a malfunction asking as you check the primer depth. Now that AK imports are kind of expensive (850 minimum for a Romanian Draco and 1k + for a Zastava when they used to be sub 500 it's hard to say. They do make pullpup chassis for both but if it went to court no idea if it would be defined as a SBR or not. 7.62x39 performs very well out of shorter barrel you don't loose much, it is more powerful than .300 but I can see .300 sometimes at a lower cost and it could become much lower until the war in Ukraine ends as most ammo imports snd even alot of US made is going to ukraine I do like the idea of full sized pistols with a chassis system so you can have a static optic and a telescoping brace. As for pistols I really don't like striker fired, would be nice if they made more DA/SA polymer or striker systems that don't require any extra take-up, I can't argue with the reliability of a glock but I don't like them. Im pretty happy with my CZP07 but I did have to get some parts from overseas to make the trigger better and some do have a known problem with the trigger reset spring. For alot of ban states I do like my new production Zastava M57 as it used to be cheap and they are thin so they don't print much, surplus tok ammo can pass pistol armour and is a every ubdersted round that has alot of power range snd being a bottle necked round makes it more reliable. The smallest pistols that I carry are 2 old Beretta's one in .32acp and another in .22lr. The one in .22lr is a tiny pocket pistol but at the range I have found that aslong as the springs are up to spec and you use quality .22lr like CCI mini mags and you clean it after shooting with a little oil in the chsmber you hardly ever get any malfunctions. I don't recommend .22lr for self defense but if your in a situation where you can only carry something small it's better than nothing. As for PDWs with Glock or other pistol mags I would prefer something that uses a double stack double feed mag as they are much more reliable such as the CZ scorp mags. Alot of original CZ scorpion parts kits are on the market mostly in .32 or 9x18 makarov so I wonder if any company will build these with telescoping braces. I'm kind of surprised that turkey had not flooded the US market with PDW style pistols. Shotguns like the shockwave I'm sure can be useful but a folding brace/stock would help alot as without you would need to spend slot of time at the range to get used to it.
Wow! Great video! Tons of useful info and opinions on PDWs. I like the category and I have a few that might qualify. Mostly based on Honest Outlaw reviews. It stretched my paradigm of PDW, with the large capacity handgun, the shockwave, and the Spear(?), the larger gun with the folding stock, 300 BO, I think. And, the free flowing, improvisational style of this video?! Damn Outlaws. You done leveled up on this one. 👍
This is a idea I have played around with a lot. As prior Marines, and prior LEO I've had a lot of training and such, but everything centered around open carry/weapons racks, etc. I have found myself in a few hairy situations, and yes sometimes a bad guy with a hand gun seeing an officer with a long gun (shotgun/AR) will not want to play. That said as a Uniformed officer in a situation you are already a target for the real bad gays, and so having easy access to long guns is a must. As a civilian I know if I find myself in a hairy situation my first priority is my family and that's what my CCW is for. But I also have a bigger bag gun close at hand, which has gone through many changes. These days its a Glock 40 (the 10mm not a ".40") with a red dot and a 20/21 Brace. I use it hunting whitetail and feral hogs, so its not a throw in a bag and forget it gun. When its in the bag it has the KRISS 33rd 10mm mags which run great on range days. But I don't carry a matching CCW. I believe in redundancy and will be addressing this in the future. I also believe the same goes for back up weapons for officers or civilians. Had know an officer who's service weapon G22 .40 shot through the grip in his holster before he had a chance to even draw, he somehow did not get hit, but his back up revolver only gave him 6 rounds of .38 S&W (and no reloads) he had to retreat until other officers arrived with bigger guns.
On the Shockwave, it's really great if you practice. I've been shooting short shotguns, usually 18 barrel, 27-30 inches for years and the 14 inch Shockwave is very handy. I can clear six plates in three seconds on the timer from low ready. How good do you really have to be?
Imho PDWs start to make sense with an 8 inch and up combined with a serious cartridge. Before I buy a 5’ 9x19 PDW I’d put a full size 357 Sig in a high quality chassis. Way better ballistics and cheaper
@@Rubeless just compare some same brand loadings and repent 😂. Even the watered down 357 Sig Speer GD has 20% over the 9x19 +P and that without going outside SAAMI specs. With Underwood the gap widens to about 30%
Shorter barreled PDWs are absolutely legendary for apartment defense where overpenetration can make the difference between your freedom and a prison sentence for not knowing who was on the other side of that wall...
"Legendary ", huh? I had either my Rem 870 with 000 buck or an SBR Ak in my apartment. "Overpenetration" concerns need to stop. Use a Nerf gun if you are legitimately concerned. And have you actually fired 9mm at anything other than paper? Hollow points, FMJ, etc all go through car doors, auto glass, etc. So you're going to choose 9mm because it will only go through ONE sheet a drywall, stop, and turn to salute you? Come on. Get out and train.
These guys and over penetration, as if 9 won’t go through a wall. How are you missing at 15 yards or most likely less? Use the proper ammunition and use every advantage you can and it ain’t a pistol cartridge.
I have to disagree with usefulness of a PDW for the armed citizen. Outside the home or your rural property a PDW is too slow to bring into action in most self defense situations. It is more of an "offensive" weapon by which I mean you are responding to a threat where you are not the immediate target. Being involved in a DGU is rare enough. Getting into situation like the Dickens incident is even a rarer event.
I have a G17 with a 509T direct mount in a recover tactical chassis. It was cheap and I like it a lot. Hides under a jacket extremely well and can carry extra ammo and a light. It works good against armadillos and I can always take it out if I want to further conceal it.
I love pcc's for pdws. I've got an fx9 I use as a bag gun, and looking at an AKV soon. I have also been looking at the psa jakl 300 blackout pistol for a bit more punch. Buuuut, let's face it. Holes are holes as long as you're putting them in relatively the same spot.
I'd love if you picked up the Ruger LC Charger and SBR'd it. That is what I plan to do in the future for my own PDW/SBR since I already have a Ruger 57 and a bunch of mags. I feel like 5.7 out a 10" barrel is a pretty good force multiplier.
I like the idea of a ruger lc charger 5.7 with a brace and a ruger 57 handgun as a combination for a pdw. same brand mags and ammunition. The same 20 round capacity but the lc charger platform can really let you use that 5.7x28 round more effectively. Food for thought, love the video god bless stay safe.
@@Rubeless i have personally owned, shot and carried a Ruger 57 and I can say it definitely has it's advantages over 9mm and it's not a replacement for 5.56, different use case. a 1800fps 20 round handgun with a wide variety of ammo. yes it's obviously more expensive then plane Jane 9mm but then again so is just about anything. ( Still love 9mm though)
I’ve got a Kriss vector in 10mm. I’ve heard rumblings that the standard folding stock may, when attached, qualify the weapon as a SBR. I noticed that in your video at approx 3:00 min you showed the gun with a non traditional stock and possibly a AR pistol brace. Is this so n where are they available? P.S. love your videos n content. Def one f my favorite RU-vidrs.
I use my Maxim defense it has the 5 inch barrel in 300 blk out. I want that sig spear 300 blk out so freaking bad. It’s so sweet. It’s next on my list my list for sure but with this economy it will probably be something else I want by time I can afford it lol😂. Let’s go Brandon
@honestoutlaw Great Info. I was just in a self-defense shooting this past week at my Cabin. I was coming back to my cabin from pig hunting and ran into a burglar.. I left my hunting rifle on my tripod at my shooting blind and only had my sidearm with me at the time.. My sidearm did stop the threat, however, i wished i had my 300blk with a light. Another thing to consider is the sheriff had to take my weapon and now I am minus one side arm.. i have about $1,600 tied up in that pistol, but its still less than what I have in my 300blk. At the end of the day, the pistol was enough, however I would have MUCH prefered to have had my SBR.
I’ve been in a similar situation. Fortunately I had a USCCA membership. Got a lawyer on the phone from USCCA in 20 min after calling them. The police asked that I turn over my firearm and my lawyer said we weren’t going to do that. Walked out of the station with the gun I had just used in self defense
EDC 9mm pistol and a 300blackout suppressed with supersonics bedside, CZ scorpion is my truck gun and hangs on the backside passenger seat. If I go into a creepy place, I appendix carry Scar 17 :)
