What's up guys, Jeff from Sorta Healthy here!
What should you be working on going into a new year as a personal trainer?
Of course, your goals will vary a bit based on what you want to do, but I would argue that there are a few things that trainers should try to do every year, or every other year at the very least, regardless of their long term plans.
Some of the things that I think all trainers should do every year, or every other year, depending on their circumstances are:
1. Make a plan (short and long term)
2. Go to a personal training conference
3. Do an online continuing education course
4. Take a vacation (helps to prevent the dreaded personal trainer burnout)
5. Raise your prices
In this video I talk about all of the 5 above things and explain why those should be the 5 things that you're working on.
What are your personal training goals for 2024? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for all of the love and support guys!
-Jeff

That burnout is real. I take a week off every December. 5 days in Vegas and 2 days to prep for the next year. Vegas is really cheap in December, not too crowded, it's not hot and there's a ton to do. You can get a great hotel room and spend your days hiking, playing games and seeing shows.

I'm very grateful for your sharing knowledge. It's proven to be very valuable and motivating. Unlike some, I didn't pass my certification (May 2024) to get another job, (I have a full and part-time job). I did it to better serve the seniors at my church. I started a bootcamp last year and they love it. I'm going to see if I could be successful as a personal trainer by helping my cousin get fit this year. If it works out I may trade in my part-time job and do personal training. I have a gym at home that I've been working on for 5 years and finally have everything I need (sorta) so, we shall see! I test in November for NASMs CNC😊

It sounds like you’re doing some really good things! I’m sure you can pass that certification if you decide that you want to. It takes a few try’s sometimes. Either way keep up the good work!

Another great video, thank you Jeff. I'm actually getting another online certification following my NASM CPT cert before I start training. It's BTS 1 & 2. Barefoot Training specialist courses from Dr. Emily. I got interested in becoming a trainer after my experiences with and transition to the barefoot movement. Through those experiences, exercises & knowledge, I see the foot as a vital foundation which affects the kinetic chain all the way up. My goal with BTS is to become a better well rounded trainer that addresses the whole body with a focus on effective & quality human movement. The assessment so far from BTS 1 have already given me additional tools for assessing clients and programming. This awareness allows me to see other issues up the chain & to address client compensations that not only affect the feet but also ankle, knee, hip & back as well as visa versa. I'm looking forward to completing BTS 2 next to gain even more insight through gait assessments. Hopefully this will help me be a better trainer for helping my clients.

Having a nutrition certification increased my pay significantly, highly recommend. I want to get myself on social media more, but sometimes it seems awkward to create content. I'm a little shy about that part.

Social media takes practice and really learning yourself/how you want to present yourself. Just like anything else, the more you do, the better/easier it will be become.

Only 4 months into personal training. Still very hard for me to live by income alone, so I need another job at the side. I think the conference is a good idea to get more experience in not just fitness related but how to teach others as well especially from professionals. As someone who works at Blink Fitness, they def will not give a raise no matter how good you are as a trainer. I feel like the raise will happen perhaps if working at a higher end gyms or studios. Idk anything about being self-employed, I can give my only perspective as an employed worker.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the support and it sounds like your head is in the right place! Conferences can be very helpful! If you’re a valuable member of the team, aka doing a good amount of training, retaining clients, etc. and you’re not getting raises on a semi regular basis, you should absolutely move to a better gym/position. At four months in, it’s too early to say whether or not Blink will treat you fairly, but you should know these things now before any employer takes advantage of you.

Same here. 6 months in Ive already accepted that I'm here for experience more than money. The good thing is i dont have to have sells skills to get clients. They do that for me. But he's right about the split shift and all the different personalities we have to deal with. I have over 25 people a week and I'm drained socially daily. Still love this job

No commercial gym is going to give you a raise LOL. Some gyms have Training tiers where you can get more money per session. So if you want more money you have to level up which also cost more money 😅

Well guys all I can tell you is this, if you’re doing a good amount of training, you’re retaining clients, and you’re not getting yearly raises, or every other year at the least, quit. Find an employer who values what you’re doing. I worked in studios and gyms for 6-7 years before I opened my own. I received a raise every one of those years. I also give all of my trainers yearly raises too. If you’re not getting those, you’re either not valued, getting exploited, or both.
@zinbx

@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation I'm telling you most gyms today are not doing that. To get more pay you have to level up with certs that's how a lot of gyms do it. But you're right they probably don't value me 🤷🏾‍♂️ Dope content either way

Question - looking at your workout form I see the exercises listed. I think to myself that there are so many more exercises I use that I can't imagine how to organize them on a sheet like this? I suppose we can use this as a template and add out own library. I have done this in a spreadsheet so that I always have client metrics recorded, I do something similiar. Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you

Thanks for the support! There’s a few open slots at the bottom of each section to accommodate that. You can also write in different exercises in the boxes. We’ve used the charts for many thousands of sessions and haven’t had any issues so far!
