Pieiron crispy spam musubi - a very different camping recipe

I'm not typically a Spam fan, but I remember having musubi in Hawaii, and it was the perfect hiking snack. Handheld, calorie-dense, and tasty!
Recently, I saw a video where they wrapped it in rice paper and toasted it, and that's where I got the idea to pieiron. Because the only thing that would have made musubi even better, is if it was warm and crispy.

Oh hey, there are several Diaso's in the Valley now. Even at Northern and 59th and the largest is at Baseline and 7th St (Or Ave)

I've been to the one nearest to me a couple of times. However, it's one of the smaller ones. It didn't have all the cool camping stuff that I have seen online, but I still managed to pick up a few little things.

Enjoy! Definitely try to find some pre-cooked sushi rice or other shortgrain rice, or cook it yourself at home. You can make Vietnamese summer rolls with your leftover rice paper (that's why I usua;lly buy it).

I finally bought myself the Stanley lunch box, the little orange square stove that will fit inside the square stainless cook pot (Captain Stag UH-4202). Can’t wait for it to arrive 😁. This will be my substitute for the Japanese mess tin. It’s cooler to be squared 😎. My coffee setup will be a Vietnamese phin and a mini moka pot.

Spam Lite has “mechanically separated chicken parts” as a second ingredient! I stick to classic spam because it’s the only variety that doesn’t. I’m from Hawaii and we love our original Spam!

What an interesting meal. Never had rice paper..or seaweed squares. Might be good with salmon..tinned salmon filets..maybe. if i can find the things i may try this...never knew there was vegan "spam" either

I mostly use rice paper to make Vietnamese summer rolls -- something I often crave when it's hot. I love snacking on nori -- especially the wasabi flavored kind!

Adding a quail egg (cracked) would be a nice addition. :p My mom had Spam as a staple in her pantry. One year she even carved a Spam loaf into the shape of a bunny and that was our Easter Ham. :) :D or is the :( #memorieswhoawhoawhoamemories

I just checked, and my grocery store sells a Korean brand of cooked rice that looks like a good candidate. Of course it's out of stock!

Thanks for this cooking idea! It's a must try. Is your sandwich maker aluminum or cast iron? Wow, your rice paper can take a lot of soaking! I just put mine on a plate, sprinkle some water on it, spread the water around, flip and repeat. Any more water and it becomes a soggy mess!

That rice paper was so old, it was *especially* dry 😂 That sandwich maker is non-stick aluminum.

Go to Indian grocery shop and purchase some papad, you must use sprayer to spray the water rice sheet or papad or soybean sheet. Purchase, cottage cheese, instead of nonveg use cottage cheese. Purchase Indian spicy mango or lemon or mix vegetables pickel. Jay bharat.

up my way i found sushi nori by blue dragon. this gives you a 8 x 8 sheet. i think the single serve spam would work better here. haven't seen any rice paper my way. going to have to try this one. do you like wasabi. as i find it in 1 to 2 oz tubes up my way by s&b wasabi. oh an i see that surpervicor gunther is overlooking the job.

Take the knife and pop 2 holes in the bottom of the can and the spam will slide out. I dip in an egg n milk wash then in flour anthen fry. It brings it to another level. Not vegan though. Sure enjoy your videos. Journey On!

It was, though I would use a different rice. That one was a bit dry. The first time I had musubi was in Hawaii. It the perfect trail snack for a waterfall hike! 😋

@ShoestringMartha outdoors..bugs..heat..dirt..sleeping in a car..who wouldn't be a fan? Joking...camping isn't for everyone..plus it's nice to have alone time....ooops..alone with Mr. Gunther and 50000 of your closest "freinds". Hope she has her own hobby "thing" she enjoys when your away. It's nice she gives you your space to be you!! Alot of couples can't or won't allow that. My husband for one...I can't even go to dollar tree alone

Ha! Yeah, alone time is another reason. I work from home, so I'm always there and I get the house to myself a lot. So if I take off for a day or two, we both get a little solitude (excluding puppers, of course).
