One of my favorite things to do in a drum lesson is show a student a simple drum lick or phrase. Before we do it, I tell them "you're not going to believe what we can do after we learn this simple phrase". Then, we go through a very methodical system of developing that simple idea...until it's no longer simple but a very complex and useable drum phrase.
Developing your own drum ideas...how do we do it? How do you come up with new drum solo ideas? New drum fill ideas? And once you have those drum ideas, how do you work through them so that you have a wealth of ideas to pull from? That's what this lesson talks about.

Ok. I’m going to stop here because I know Stephen has a lot to do besides replying to his fans. I love the replies but I work in an office and my wrist hurts! Plus I drum! I need my wrists! Stephen don’t waste your wrists on me! I just want to say that your reply was so impactful. I suffer from terrible self hatred but I’m working on it with meditation and therapy. That you replied so thoughtfully and kindly, my God, thank you! Imagine how hard drumming is for me. It takes al I have to practice. But I do! Because of awesome, inspiring, kind teachers like you. You have no idea how important you are. Or maybe you do? Either way, thank you!

Jan Arleth, i have issues with severe pain on my left thumb and wrists plus arthritis on the joints of my fingers. I have tried a CBD cream it's made by Deeply Rooted. It's very effective in relieving the pain on my hands and wrists, try it and see if it helps you the way it has helped me. I am sure there are many brands that make a CBD cream. I hope that if you try it it will help you the way it has helped me.

Dude on your point about self hatred. It would probably be a good idea to spend time thinking about changing your thought patterns and finding out on how you can influence your subconcious for good. There are several good ways and meditation/yoga is definetely one of them.

“Kind of becomes a four stroke ruff in the hands...” This statement sums up the brilliance of this video. Some of the phrasing that emerged out of the noodling were things I’ve played but I’ve come to from very different rudimentary roots. Cool how that works.

Stephen. I’ve watched so many of your videos. I’ve always been so impressed with you for years. I was a subscriber for awhile but truth be told, I chose Drumeo because you were there and there were so many awesome drummers there, I made a fiscal decision. But I’m subscribed to your RU-vid channel and I think you’re an amazing teacher. This video is the best you’ve ever made. You are so smart. Better than that, you’re so generous with your information. My favorite lesson you’ve done is on Rock n Roll. Zep. That you can play that and count it and talk at the same time! Homage to you!

Love your videos. Have been in bands since I'm 15 mostly as a singer (about 30 years or so) and I am a big Led Zeppelin fan. I have a Zeppelin tribute called www.letszep.net and a cover band called Groove Pocket! LoL! Heard you mention Groove And Pocket in this video. Anyhow.... after having Chronic Bronchitis in April and part of May 2019.... I went to a couple of jams Drumming for a bit since I wanted to save my voice! I started having ALOT of FUN playing the Drums! Not having to worry about lyrics or hitting the right note! I was asked by a bunch of girls to play drums to host a monthly open mic to my surprise! I guess I have a pretty good sense of rhythm after all of these years! Anyhow.... again Love your videos happy to have found them!!

This type of way to think about phrases sounds a lot like the african approach to rhythm. What i mean is the order of hands matters but not the speed or the space between notes. And i love to practice that’s morfing exercises to be more accurate and creative. Thy for the lesson it’s cool that we can pick your brain a little bit ^^ 🧟‍♀️

I think a sextuplet has 3 “accents” as opposed to 16th note triplets which has 2
@MrMOGHammer
@MrMOGHammer 5 лет назад
@@unknownyoutubechannel6196A sextuplet has as many accents as you wish for the song you are writing, so you can get different time signatures "feels" with the same pattern of note lengths. So you do not end up always putting your accents on the actual beats. Syncopated rhythms will use many "off-beat" accents to create a sense of tension.

I keep listening to it and the rhythm at 2:25 which you call sextuplets seems to me like fivelets. Once you add the kick it's 5 evenly spaced notes - kick/sn/sn/sn/sn. The first few beats of snare only have six note groupings but afterwards I hear fivelets...
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums 5 лет назад
Trevor Schnedler Trevor Schnedler Trevor Schnedler it sounds weird because I didn’t start it on 1 and I ended it mid beat. I also added an extra snare when I did the particular demo you’re referencing....my apologies lol. I really was just shooting this off the cuff. Yes, it’s a 5 note grouping (my mistake) played over a 6 note subdivision.

It is true for any instruments (yes, even the triangle). Taking a simple rhythm, lick, or phrasing and getting it to the next level can translate into a full song. The many variations will keep it moving and out of boredom. How much has been done with only the same 3 chords is amazing.
