Dang this is proof that you don't need advanced graphics or an overly complex story to make a great experience. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! So i don't know if the game realizes this but when she talks about the mom dying she says 'he was 8 I was 15 then later on she talks about how at 16 he was drunk driving and says well I was a teenager too except with a 7 year age gap she'd be 22-24 depending on when her bday fell. Come on game. An excellent playthrough though CJU!

No, you misunderstood. Maya was talking about she was a parent to Nik when she was a teen at 15 yrs old. So it is accurate. She was mostly talking about why she couldn't raise Nik well, cause she was a teen parent. Her talking about that is not connected to nor does it mentions her age when Nik was 16. Even at age 23, it can be tough to parent. Especially to a troubled, headstrong, alcoholic teen sibling. Especially since Maya said she felt thrusted into parenthood as a teen and she said she was dealing her own demons too at 7:09

Well made for a short story. Interesting choice for names, especially the aunt who neglected them. One of the biblical characterizations for those types of spirits is "The Accuser of the Bretheren", they're the ones that drag out your guilts, sins and negativity. They're known to do that during exorcism, they even had it in The Exorcist where Pazazu shouts to priest, "You killed your mother!". I liked the inclusion of the old trope of capturing souls through photographs. It seems the brother found a chance at redemption, for once, he saved his sister. A nicely researched story.

Looked fine, decent story, but the developer might want to ease up on the explicit exposition (and check their math). Lots of melodramatic cut scenes and main character monologueing about a tragic past tends to overstep into cheesy territory. Additionally, they made the apartment look worse as time passed, but they did not give the player any time in the narrative to appreciate the creeping horror of a downward spiral. We should have been encouraged to wander around in the grimy apartment for a bit and take note of how bad things were getting before we needed to dash out the door after Nik, I think. Would have worked well with the theme of depression/disinterest in caring for oneself.
@user-gu9yq5sj7c
@user-gu9yq5sj7c Год назад
Why was the monologueing about the tragic past cheesy, and why did you think it was melodramatic? I thought it was short and tame. Maya spoke about it simply. She wasn't emotional about it. It gives context. Some devs want to keep their games short too. I thought just the appearance of the grimy apartment was fine and didn't need Maya commenting on it. I think it makes more sense for Maya to just care about running after Nik as fast as she could. I think it's fine, good, and realistic to not depict every character as so scared or shocked. Maya did comment a little about how she thought someone was in the bathtub. Maya was talking about she was a parent to Nik when she was a teen at 15 yrs old. So it is accurate. She was mostly talking about why she couldn't raise Nik well, cause she was a teen parent. Her talking about that is not connected to nor does it mentions her age when Nik was 16. 7:02 Maya said they never knew their father. For the metal, I think it was specifically talking about Nik. To which, some troubled people do turn to metal. Don't some people into metal like to talk about or justify that metal sings about pain and misery a lot? I mean if people are singing about pain why wouldn't that attract troubled people? Troubled doesn't mean he's a bad person. Those metal posters aren't exactly positive pictures. The look like they could be posters for the horror genre. I'm not knocking metal. I like Nightwish. Maybe Maya and Nik could have different fathers or the dad was absent in their lives. Or maybe that part is a plothole. The devs could've make the dad disappear a different way. The was a pretty good game, my only real complaint on the game is that it relied a lot on that Jumpscare Music Sting and taking away players control for a bit so the camera can look at the horror event. Like the visual is all you need to really give horror, adding that loud musical sting makes it feel like the devs don't trust the subtly of the scene alone to out right scare the players so they put in that musical sting to convert those scares into Jumpscares. And really take the risk that the player might miss a horror event if they don't completely look in the direction to see it, forcing the camera just tells the player horror is about to happen and you can't let the player miss it.

I speak with my brother semi-regularly because we live in the same city and his family are over every other weekend or so. However, back when he was in college across the country, I pretty much only spoke with him when he was home for holidays or over the summer. It isn't that we weren't close, but more that anything substantial we had to say really needed saying in person. And we didn't see the need to text small talk all the time. We figured that if something was wrong, THEN the other person would text. If they didn't, they were fine. So, that being said, having a similar pattern of communication as the characters in the game, if I was doing something dangerous and wanted my brother to stay out of it, the absolute LAST thing I would do would be to call him and tell him to stay out of it. Just saying.

as a metal fan, I do find it pretty funny that her brother listening to death metal lead him to drugs. In my experience, majority of metal fans are pretty well adjusted, chill people. The worst it gets is those who struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts who turn to black metal to cope with their inner pain, making life more tolerable. If they wanted to be more authentic about the brother getting into drug use via music, they should probably look to EDM which has a lot of psychedelic inspired tracks, and well... when you go to rave parties, it's a lot more common to run into people who are drugged out of their mind than if you go to a metal concert.

I really enjoyed this. Great attention to detail. Nice voice acting. Being picky, maybe a bit _too_ much exposition, as Crux Game Studios is wont to do. Still, the lore is thorough, sensible, and well-written. For me, there was a lot more action, tension, and scare factor in Within than in Decrypt. 👍 The "happy" ending was a surprise. Imo, it would have been scarier if after the last cut scene and black screen, the camera pulled away to see no one in the apartment. Then the player, pulled back to the computer, sees Maya's picture on the in-game "photo altar," her eyes blacked out like the others. The End. 👀😱😆

@@user-gu9yq5sj7c Regarding metal, the game says he didn't listen to "anything more violent than Metallica", then when he started getting in trouble he started to turn to death metal : that just reminded me about the psychosis in the 90's that listening to heavy music turned teenagers into suicidal, violent and/or or satanist people, which is ridiculous let's be clear. The game seemed to follow the same argument. Interestingly, the same bullshit theory has been applied to videogames btw. That, and the fact that the game's subject is, let's be honest for a second, quite goofy (which is perfectly fine!), but is treated without even a hint of tongue-in-cheeck humor, made me write that it takes itself very seriously while I think it could have played with its theme a little bit. Some good scares here and there, but by the 4th or 5th time they used the same jumpscare sound effect and forced the camera, it took me out of it despite the decent atmosphere. Story-wise, I don't know why Maya would want to help her brother when he seems to do nothing but use her. Why care about somebody who only comes around when they need something from you? Definitely an interesting character flaw for one to have, but the game doesn't really address it. Nor does it address the parental neglect by the aunt or Maya's side of guilt with that demon much (since I figured that's why it wanted her). Also the 'death metal/video games making a kid troubled' was such a bad trope to lean into when this is trying to take itself seriously. Could've eased up imo, felt like it was trying too hard sometimes. Things came off a little flat and weird timeline-wise. How would Maya be a teen when Nik had that accident at 16? Maya would've been 23 then since there's 7 years between them mentioned when the mom died. Someone should check their math. I also think they should've opened with Nik's photo being at the beginning of the dark web game (maybe turns on by itself when she tries to leave the room), since I see no other reason why Maya would even care about playing it when she was searching for clues to his whereabouts. Not a bad game, but I think it could've been pushed more for sure. I like the idea of demons using obscure games to make pacts and take souls though lol

I didn't take it as Nik using Maya. But that he's troubled or has mental illness, and she wants to help him. Maya also kinda feels guilty she didn't raise Nik well enough. There are family or sibling relationships like that. Where they don't really communicate but when they do, are still friendly to each other or call for trouble. There's a comment here that said that. Why is it unbelievable for a aunt or guardian to be negligent? Maybe, like Maya, cause the aunt was unwantedly and unpreparedly thrusted into parenthood. Maybe the aunt thought Maya is a teen and could take care of herself and her brother. The demon didn't seek out Maya. She came to it looking for Nik. Do you stigmatize any hobbies or genres? It's not just metal, every hobby has stigmas. Twosetviolin shows comments of some people saying people into classical music are elitist snobs. Especially since Maya said she felt thrusted into parenthood as a teen and she said she was dealing her own demons too at 7:09 13:49 Nik's message log about the game and there not being much else to go on does motivate Maya to look into the game.

@@user-gu9yq5sj7c I know there’s different types of familial relationships but, only going to another person when they need a favor, never actually being there for them (emotionally or physically), isn't a healthy relationship at all. He’s an adult who kept choosing to get drunk, waste his money, etc. And no matter how many times Maya helped him, he just went back to those same shitty choices--only coming to her when he needed to be bailed out. Never helped Maya once (expect for saving her from the demon I guess). Definitely looks one-sided to me. About the aunt, I never said I didn’t believe that parents/guardians can’t be neglectful-unfortunately some are. I said that the game never addresses it. It kept trying to take itself too seriously yet avoids going into any detail about it, despite how much the dialogue turns into a terrible trauma dump. Maya blaming herself even though it was never her job at 15 to be a substitute parent to Nik would’ve been interesting to dive into, but it only scratches the surface level of that-mostly through 1 or 2 dialogue lines from the demon AT THE END OF THE GAME. The writing needed some polish for sure. Also it’s a demon that feeds off guilt and kept luring Maya further in only once she started playing. That’s why it later impersonated Nik and mocked Maya towards the end. It was trying to take her to feed off her guilt too. As far as the music, I had a problem with the GAME literally treating Nik listening to death metal as a bad thing and part of his troubled life. Even Maya’s remarks on ‘he used to only listen to pop, what happened’ as if listening to that type of music is bad. Feeding into that old dumb trope of ‘the devil’s music and people that listen to it are evil’. That was in the writing itself. You just have to do the math to know there’s supposed to be 7 years between them since the mom died when Maya was 15 and Nik was 8. Meaning that when Nik was 16, Maya would be 23. Not a teenager. The game itself did the math wrong-other people in the comments pointed it out too. It would've made more sense for the game to turn on by itself once Maya boots the PC and finds nothing. Maybe with a picture of Nik and her hearing his voice or something to give an incentive as to why she would stop and play a game rather than leave his apartment and start asking neighbors/landlord/etc. for actual clues.

It was weird to see the ПК symbol on the red box at the start of the game. It stands for fire hose and is a standard in the post USSR countries. Could be just an asset the dev grabbed for cheap without thinking.

Pretty enjoyable game I gotta say Though the massive exposition around the start with the whole "my lil bro had/has a hard life" at the start is like a brick to the face with how it (to me at least) seems like its trying way too hard.

How was it trying too hard? Aren't a lot of games or horror games written like that? It gives context. Some devs want to keep their games short. Maya talking about it was short and tame. She spoke simply and didn't get emotional.

@@user-gu9yq5sj7c oh I mean too hard in that it's a massive trauma dump in exposition in such a short time at the start when they could spaced it out a little more throughout the game (as short as the game is) or let some of the surrounding do the talking for itself. The voice acting is totally fine.

I agree with "a". Even though I get annoyed with "a" repeating things they've already stated in other posts , for once they didn't repeat their self here. Any way , like "a" said , she kept it short and simple. Giving back story things in pieces rather than a huge info dump all at once is nice. Good pacing.... no huge / rushed info dump , is it weird because it's personal and / or you relate to it on some level and it "hits too close to home" or is it weird in that you "can't relate" so there's dissonance / dischord or some thing like that...? ( sorry not sure what the correct word to use here would be ) Like it takes you out of immersion? Why does it matter if they are made up characters or not? Sorry not trying to argue just trying to under stand you
