Indeed, the police often stands in a bad light but they do a lot of good things. There should be more attention given to the positives. Where would we be without them!

True, but I'm still a little traumatized by a situation with a police officer who was quite grumpy and rude to me. I was trembling with fear I already had for the police.

Dutch police are _very_ different from American cops. Their primary purpose isn't to enforce the law at any cost, but to employ force _where necesary._ Emphasis on trying everything else first, and force is giving up on the puzzle.

A Traumabeertje (Trauma teddy or Comfort bear) is standard equipment for emergency vehicles. Police, Fire brigade, Ambulance and other emergencies have them on board. They are immediately replaced by new ones like other stuff. Kids can keep them, and it says so on the 'shawl' around their neck.

There's a 'rule' to remove the bag before the children see the bear. Years ago a child got a bear and started to cry because it was suffocating, 'you may never put your head in a plastic bag' is what children are told. Since then they remove the bags earlier ;) BTW. Two years ago my tyre exploded when I was just driving over a bridge. Within minutes the right lane was closed with a red cross. There are cameras that keep an eye on the road and the moment something happens they can close off one of the lanes.

Some pieces of highway also monitor traffic with induction loops. The moment speeds become low or there's active congestion, they will automatically show speed restrictions or if there's a sudden standstill of a vehicle, that lane can be crossed off. It's pretty amazing how well it works.

Matrix sign Netherlands: A red X closes a lane, a green arrow down opens a lane, a white arrow (to right or left) indicates leave this lane (red cross ahead). If there is a number on it, that is the maximum speed right now and this over classes other signs. Circle with diagonal stripe; end of all previous indications. Because of their importance, high fines are given when you violate the indication.

@darkknight8139
@darkknight8139 2 года назад
"Are they able to just close off certain lanes with the X'es as they need to?" Yes, that is what they are used for. Every major highway, especially in the west and centre of NL, has thoses signs above each lane. About every 300 metres there is one. The signs can show a temporary maximum speed, or in this case, some arrows directing traffic to another lanes and even crosses that act like red stop signs. It is never allowed to drive under a red cross. Before the red cross, there is always one arrow directing you to the left or right. If two lanes have to be "crossed out", the first sign says a maximum speed of 50 on the left and middle lane, and a "go left" arrow on the right lane The next sign says 50 for the left lane, a red cross for the right lane and a "go left" arrow for the middle lane. And the last one says two red crosses, and a speed limit of 50 on the left lane only. In this case, people are massively ignoring these signs, and the police officers in the car are not happy about it. If the police gets the chance to fine these drivers, they can send fines on just the numberplate of the car. It doesn't matter who the driver was, the owner will get a fine of 250 euros.
@rubenjanssen1672

not 100% it is also used to creats a bit of a safe place for the people to go (atleast that is the theorie thos fuckers ignoring the crosses.....)

Remember, these aren't long-connection roadways. These are more like the New England DC-area net: Lots of cities near eachother connected by short-ish stretches of motorway.
@darkknight8139
@darkknight8139 10 месяцев назад
@@JoshSweetvale Except that the short-ish motorways are not short at all. Motorways do connect cities, but they do not change into another kind of road when they reach a city. Motorways are laid around cities, like this one. The motorway in this video is the A13 near Rotterdam. It goes from the A20 junction in Rotterdam to the A4 junction in The Hague. You can get from Dordrecht to The Hague without ever leaving the motorway, although you will see many motorway numbers and junctions on that particular route: A16, A15, A16 again, A20, A13, a small stretch of the A4 and finally the A12. The A12 terminates in the city centre of The Hague, it is really uncommon for a motorway to terminate in a city. Maybe that A12 is the only one in a major city in NL.

@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster 8 месяцев назад
@@JoshSweetvale The A7 highway which runs through my city, is the longest highway in my country and has matrix signs (what the electronic signs capable of rescinding all speed restrictions that are on permanent signs are called in Dutch) all over it. You will see these everywhere, and they are not used only for speed restrictions or requests to evacuate a lane, but also to fully stop a highway full of traffic towards a tunnel when the height-profile radar systems have sensed a truck that won't fit into the tunnel and did not deviate of course towards the tunnel, lowering gates to stop all traffic into the tunnel at the moment the truck is predicted to be close to the tunnel entry. The whole procedure there looks like this: Matrix signs flash on indicating an icon that shows a triangular sign with traffic lights in them, signalling traffic: "Be aware you are going to see a red light on a highway!" (Regular traffic lights are uncommon on Dutch highways, hence the indication). After a while a yellow/amber light will come on, indicating: "You need to stop if you can, but otherwise continue on." After that it will obviously start showing a red light and the gates will come down, fully closing off the whole highway, along with another sign in between the signs showing the traffic lights saying something like: "TRUCK HEIGHT OUT OF BOUNDS - WAIT FOR HIGHWAY AUTHORITY" (this is automatic, they get an alarm as soon as a truck does not deviate from the tunnel's path, they are usually there within 1-2 minutes because with some important tunnels, one of their bases is right around the corner). They then measure the trucks near the gates with their height profile indicator and every truck to high is taken out and driven off to a site for either route instructions to follow, or a fine. Further back signs will light indicating a speed restriction to stop the risk of people slamming into the back of the traffic jam that has been created by the full stop of the truck that's to high and has caused all traffic to stop. After the tunnel entrance has been cleared of the trucks, the traffic sign icons disappear, and the gates go up, and the red lights might stay on for a while until they are sure everything is reset and traffic can be on it's way again, upon which the traffic lights either stop showing a red and go off, or show a green for some time only to then go off.

Hey! Dutch guy here. The red x'ses are used for multiple things. Its most used for a good flow on the highway. Usually one roadway of a highway has an x. But if a traffic jam occurs the can open a lane for extra space. The x is also used for this kind of situation. A accident has happend so drivers can no longer drive on that exact lane.

The red X isn't just used for emergency vehicles, it's a system that is used to close/clear any lane for any reason, so it's also used to clear out lanes for road maintenance, for instance, and it's also supplemented with special vehicles equipped with LED arrows and pawns/barricades once they have time to get to the scene. Just the other day they've had to close down lots stuff like that because a high-pressure gas line was at risk of breaking when a sinkhole had formed under it due to a leak in a water line, they closed off every highway that went past the area because there was a risk of a major explosion, so they'd closed off the entire highway all the way back to the previous exit (about 1000 meters from where the problem was), so people could be redirected to go through different routes.

It is strictly forbidden to drive on a lane with a red cross above it, as it can be dangerous, and sometimes it is an environmental issue, usually when there is little traffic. And don't drive on a lane with a red cross because you always get a fine because there are cameras everywhere.
@FacelessJanus
@FacelessJanus 2 года назад
Years ago, they opened up the so-called emergency lanes on many high/motorways, for a better trafic flow. Since than they added those matrix signs above the road, so they can either open or close those lanes. Red X, obviously means the lanes is closed and can only be used by emergency services. (srry just thought this explanation might help for a bit better understanding of the rules over here :D ) The stuffed animals. It is nowadays standard to have them, as seemingly certain studies showed that it helps children who went through traumatic events, to have something like that. And as you see, the girl definitely clutches hers, so in a way it seems to be helping her.

red crosses above the roadway are for safety so that those involved in a breakdown or accident are safe from oncoming traffic and the emergency services can also use these lanes to reach an emergency more quickly.
@Dutch3DMaster

Lanes can indeed be closed off on request of highway authorities (which can be police or something called Rijkswaterstaat) and on some stretches of highway there will be "safe havens" for when someone experiences a vehicle breaking down or has a medical emergency and makes it to one, that contain detection loops so that upon occupying that area, the lane right next to it get's a red-cross around the area, and the lanes next to it a speed restriction. 2 or 3 signs before the red cross they will show a so called "Dwangpijl" ("Arrow of force", if you'd translate that loosely) which is one that requests people to evacuate that lane either to the left and sometimes to the right, and is indicated not only by the yellow/white arrow, but also by blinking lights top-left and top-right, and then bottom-left and bottom-right, blinking top to bottom (you saw a bit of it in the video).
